According to Sri Lankan legends, there was a man at King Dutugemunu's army called "Jayasena" his birth place was Ritigala. Then he was reputed as "Ritigala Jayasena".There was a fight between "Ritigala Jayasena" & "Gotaimbara".This fight was under the instructions of King Dutugemunu. It was very serious event & fight should be continued until one person dies.It was for hours & suddenly Gotaimbara hit to Jayasena's neck by his foot & due to that shot Jayasena's head separated from his body & flown over to the jungle.Thousands of people were seeking his head for long time but failed. Then a wild bear was found. That bear's head was bud to the Jayasena's body. But front & back sides of that head were interchanged mistakenly during the budding operation. Then than new creature ran to jungle. He was reputed as "Mahasona" islandwide. This is how Mahasona came to our culture.
There were two teaching schools("Guru Kula") of traditional fights("Angam pora")at King Dutugemunu's era. They were"Sudaliya"(originator was Ritigala Jayasena) & "Maruwalliya"(originator was Gotaimbara). Those two schools were the only suppliers of solders to Sri lankan army from Anuradhapura era to kandy era. They were always trying to defeat each other & due to that there were serious fights frequently each other like present"Paathaalaya"(under world). Those fights started after killing Ritigala Jayasena by Gotaimbara on that day. Most of the times the leaders of those two Guru kula were killed by each other during 2000years.It is somewhat same as present political situation."History is repeating from time to time".
MEYA GANA THAWA WISTHARA DANNAWANAM DANNA
From what I heard, the fight between those two warriors was due to a personal issue. It was not instructed by the king. Jayasena had insulted Gota's wife or something. The fight ended in a matter of seconds.
yes, i remember reading abt in thupawaliya. It was something to do with the wife. but can't remember anything abt the wife.
According to one version, Jayasena was a yaksha (not human) and possessed the body of Gotaimbara's wife after he saw her. Other version says that Jayasena was a human warrior who put a spell on her etc.
Anyway, after killing Jayasena, Gota went to the king's palace totally drunk. The king did not allow him to enter. Ashamed of this, Gotaimbara left the palace that same night and became a Bikku in a distant 'Aaranya'. If my memory is correct, he did attain nibbana just like Theraputthabaya (the Bhikku who has defeated Gota and a bunch of his friends single handily when they screwed up the temple ground; later Gota convinced him to leave the temple and fight for the protection of Buddhism).
