Somebody told me that a Sri Lankan dies every 3 hours due to road traffic accidents. Statistically, no other issue in the country kills such an amount of people. Furthermore, I guess it causes a significant expense for health department.

Once I heard, "If you have to improve something, first you have to measure that". I too think that it is true. I guess we do not have accurate and timely data about road traffic accidents.

All road traffic accidents are not reported neither to police, nor to the hospitals. However, most road traffic accidents are reported to insurance agents. Therefore, for capturing most of the road traffic accidents, we have to collaborate with insurance agencies.

We could develop a software platform including GIS tracking. Identification of areas where commonly accidents are happening is important in view of planning preventive measures.

Until a digital solution is available, we could capture data using a paper-based form. Getting the GPS location could be easily done using an android mobile.

I think there is already a system that shares accident data among the insurance companies.
