CR and FC won't have it easy against Police

Ranjeeva SENEVIRATNE
Last year's runners-up CR and FC will face the tough task of overcoming Sri Lanka Police in the curtain-raiser of the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Tournament at Longden Place today.

The forte of the Policemen have been their power-packed forwards who should give a torrid time to the famed CR 'eight' today. Nishantha Welagedera, Malith Hettiarachchi, Asela Vithana, Nalin Archarige, Gemunu Indrachapa and T.P. Seneviratne have stood out with their fiery loose play in the last three years and are capable of matching upto CR's forwards Bilal Hassan, Henry Terrence, Ashen Karthelis, Ishan Noor, Danushka Perera and Skipper Dushanth Lewke.

In the set scrums CR's experienced hooker Bilal Hassan should get the better of Police's Malith Hettiarachchi while the line outs should be shared between Police's Vithana and Dinesh Kumara and the CR duo of Noor and Karthelis.

But the Red Shirts boast of a superior back division. They have a fine halves combination in ex-Havelocks player Dilan de Zoysa and Nigel Ratwatte (who has played for Mauritius in International Rugby). Centres Ashan de Costa and Shabbir Mohomad are hard runners who are capable of breaching the Police defence while on the wings they will have the services of that powerful runner Vishvamithra Jayasinghe.

The Policemen will prefer to keep play with their forwards with fly half Harshana Wijeweera's long kicks to touch giving them territorial advantage.

The teams:

Police: Nishantha Welagedera, Malith Hettiarachchi, Sivadason, Dinesh Kumara, Asela Vithana, T.D. Seneviratne, Nalin Archarige, Gemunu Indrachapa, Hashan Gomes and Harshana Wijeweera, Champika Thushara (Captain), Priyantha Ekanayake, Thusitha Samaratilake, Hasaranga, Jeevan Amaradasa.

CR and FC: Henry Terrence, Bilal Hassan, Shehan Dimithri, Ashen Karthelis, Zaheer Jahn, Ishan Noor, Danushka Perera, Dushanth Lewke (Captain), Dilan de Zoysa and Nigel Ratwatte, Vishvamithra Jayasinghe, Ashan de Costa, Shabbir Mohomad, Dinusha Chathuranga, Reza Mubarak.

Kingswood in stunning win over Isipatana

Former champions Kingswood College Kandy produced a superb second half rally to beat a powerful Isipatana outfit by 22 points to 15 points in a thrilling Singer inter school Under 20 division one league rugby tournament match worked off at Havelock Park yesterday.

The Kingswoodians who were trailing 12-15 at half time came back magnificently and turned the game in their favour while collecting their points from two goals, one try and one penalty.

Isipatana responded with one goal, one penalty try and one penalty.

Isipatana took the lead with a penalty try but came under severe pressure thereafter from the visitors who scored twice to snatch the initiative. First it was centre three quarter Mohamed Fazlin who touched near the corner flag with fullback Rajindra Sansoni adding the extra points.

Few minutes later Sansoni produced a beautiful piece of work to score their second try of the match while adding the finishing touches to a splendid three quarter move.

However Isipatana staged a good recovery and kept their hopes alive while scoring their only try of the match and also putting over a penalty shortly before half time.

Winger Umayanga Sooriyabandara did the honours with a superb dummy and fly half Prashan Attanayake responded with a neat 25 metre penalty as Isipatana went into half time with a slender 15-12 lead.

In the second half Kingswood College changed their tactics and launched a series of attacking moves through their third row which really put a lot of pressure on their opponents.

As a result winger Prabath Jayatilleke was able to slice through the Isipatana defence and score probably the match winning try, few minutes before the final whistle. Oshan Perera made no mistake with the conversion and almost immediately he followed up with a crucial penalty that completely sealed the game in their favour.

Thomians edge out Antonians

S. Thomas’ College went through some real anxious moments before recording a hard fought 15 points to 12 points victory over St. Anthony’s College in their Singer inter school Under 20 division one league rugby tournament match worked off at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

The Thomians collected their points from one goal, one try and one penalty after the scores were level 12 all at half time. The Antonians responded with one goal and one penalty.

Royal in 12-0 win
The defending champions Royal College pulled off a convincing 12 points to nil victory over Wesley College in their Singer inter school Under 20 division one league rugby tournament match worked off at the Royal Sports Complex yesterday.

Even then Royal were given a tough time by their opponents as they managed to score only one goal and one try after they had taken a close 5 nil lead at half time.

CR in superb 32-18 victory over Police

CR and FC began their campaign for the Caltex ‘A’ division league title on a winning note defeating a determined Police outfit by 32 points ( 2 goals,3 tries and 1 penalty) to 18 (1 try,1 goal and 2 penalties) win at Longden Place yesterday.

Police began on a promising note when Harshana Wijeweera fired over a penalty, but in a couple of minutes ‘CR’s winger Vishwamithra Jayasinghe broke off from midfield and dashed through to score and Reza Mubarak added the extra points. The ‘Red Shirts’ combining well and had a brief scoring session with a Mubarak, penalty and two tries scored by number 8 Dushantha Lewke off a five yard scrum and winger Vishmamithra Jayasinghe covering around 80 meters to cross the police line. Reza Mubarak was successful in putting over one conversion.

However, police partially came back into the game with their forwards play. They touched down twice in succession when Gemunu Indrachapa intercepted a pass and saw Thusitha Samaratileka piercing the ‘CR’ defence which Wijeweera made no mistake with the conversion and minutes later prop Nishantha Welegedera scored off a push over try.

‘CR’ skipper and number 8 Lewke gave his side a 25/15 lead just before lemons scoring an unconverted try.

On resumption the policemen gave a spirited display to keep ‘CR’ at bay by winning possession through their robust set of forwards.

They looked impressive and were only short of converting the good work into points which they desperately needed to reduce the gap. During the dying stages of the game hooker Bilal Hassan made certain that ‘CR’ press the advantage with a try which Mubarak made no mistake with the kick. Wijeweera put over a penalty to make the final tally 32/18 in favour of the Longden Place Club.

CH in morale-boosting 26-20 win over Army

The youthful CH and FC outfit scored a morale-boosting 26 points (one goal, two tries, two penalties, one drop goal) to 20 (one goal, two tries, one penalty) win over the Sri Lanka Army in the curtain-raiser of the Caltex 'A' Division League Tournament played at Maitland Crescent yesterday after leading 8-7 at the breather.

CH and FC opened scoring through a superb unconverted try by winger Lakala Perera in the first half. A few minutes later the soldiers snatched the lead when flanker Karunatilleke scored a try off a move in the CH '25' with Kapila Knowlton adding the extra points. However CH once again grabbed the lead when fly half Omar Hassan dropped a peach of a goal from 30 metres out for CH to lead 8-7 at half time.

CH and FC dominated the second half to score two more tries through winger Lakala Perera and centre Avantha Hettiarachchi and a penalty put over by Omar Hassan to give them a 23-15 lead three minutes before the final whistle. During this period the soldiers scored a try through No 8 Manoj Silva while Kapila Knowlton fired across a penalty.

In the 37th minute of the second half CH's Omar Hassan put over a 35 metre penalty to make it 26-15.

During the dying stages of the game Army's winger Saliya Handapangoda put the finishing touches to a three quarter move in the CH '25' by crossing the CH goal line and scored mid right. Kapila Knowlton missed the conversion and CH ran out winners by 26 points to 20. Referee: Irshard Cader

Lions Wounded By Petes Brilliance

The much awaited game against Trinity College Kandy and St.Peters College Bambalapitiya was worked off yesterday at the Pallakele grounds in Kandy in front a packed house. The Peterites proved to be too strong and came out winning 31-10. The Trinitians faced their first loss of the season.

damithmeedi.jpg

The two sides were lined up for their respective college songs and the eagerness to get on to the park was shown in their eyes. Both teams ran on to the grounds hard and made it known that they were in for business. The Trinitians started off really well with a flurry of attacks and their relentless pressure on the Petes defense saw them going over for a corner flag try by winger Mohamed Seshan. The conversion was a hard one and was missed by Fly half Nimesh Yatawara. The Petes struck back immediately through their star center three quarter Dhanushka Ranjan. He did a small shimmy and avoided the oncoming defenders and ran 45 meters to score far left. The difficult conversion was put over by the Petes fly Dulaj Perera. The Petes then extended their lead through another brilliant penalty kick by Dulaj 40 meters out. The score moved on to 10-5 and this was the score at Lemons and it seemed as if the Peterites were getting in to their rhythm slowly.

The second half was played at intense pace had the whole of Pallakele at the edge of their seats. Both teams kept on attacking with some hard hitting and some brilliant three quarter play. The Petes surely had the better three quarter line and they were delightful to watch in full flow. The Trinitians dominated most of the second half but could not convert the chances into points. Their three quarters could not make use of the overlap they had in more than 3 occasions especially when one of the Petes three quarters was given a yellow card for an infringement. They had the penetration but lacked the finish. The scrum half for the Trinitians Rehan Weerakoon had an exceptional game in both attack and in defense and got good support from full back Kanchana Ramanayake in the first half.

The Petes prodigy Dhanuhka Ranjan continued his super form from the first half as he scored another blinder of a try. this took the Petes lead up to 17 points to Trinity’s 5.The Petes were ready to hit back again and this time it was skipper and number eight Keith Gurusinghe who muscled his way over the try line. The captain had a superb outing as he lead by example. The lead was extended to 24-5 with just a few minutes left on the clock.

The Trinitians got a consolation try in the dying staged of the match through their wing three quarter Akila Dissanayake. He was outstanding last year but seems to have lost his touch coming in to the 2010 season. The conversion was missed and the score board read 24-10 to Peters. The final blow came through thepapare man of the match Dhanushka Ranjan who chipped, collected and sped past the defense to complete a hat trick. The conversion was good from scrum half Meedin and took the score to 31-10 which was the end score. Meedin was brilliant at the break downs and proved to be quite a handful in attack.

Trinity will be playing another tough match next week in Kandy against Kingswood while Petes will play Prince of Wales in Bambalapitiya. The game was refereed by Dilroy Fernando.

Stand out players

St.Peters

Keith Gurusinghe, Shenal Dias, Meedin, Bhanuka Nanayakkara, Dulaj Perera and Dhanushka Rajan

Trinity

Damith Dissanayake, Rehan Weerakoon, Kanchana Ramanayake and Gotabaya Mahesh

Round Up Of Week 2-Inter School Rugby League

meedakkk.jpg

Week two of the under 19 inter school league tournament was conducted during the weekend and the crowds were able to witness some closely contested matches from most of the sides. The matches that produced some brilliant rugby were the games between Kingswood and Isipathana and also St.Peters vs. Trinity played in Kandy.

Royal in hard fought win against Wesley (12-0)

Royal college Colombo went through some anxious moments in their game against Wesley played last Friday at the Royal Sports complex. Wesley College took the challenge to the defending champ and it almost came good for them as the Royalists only managed to score 5 points till the dying stages of the game.

The Wesley team was seen hard at defense and didn’t let the Reid Avenue boys settle in. they were constantly disrupting their attack with some solid defense. The first try for the Royal team came when prop forward Yudith Karunaratne went over for a push over try. The conversion was missed and they were leading the game 5 points to 0. Wave after wave of Royal attack was seen but they could not penetrate the wisely defense and make the all important finishes. At the final stages of the match hooker Abdul Jabbar went over for their second try of the match. This was converted by fly half Arshad Jamaldeen.

Royal will go against Dharmaraja

Wesley will play St.Anthony’s

Thomians defeat Antho in a thriller (15-12)

The S.Thomas’ rugby team overcame a spirited St.Anthony’s side on Friday by 15 points to 12 at the Mount Lavinia grounds. It was a super game with both sides dishing out some gritty rugby.

The Thomians went in to the match as favorites and started off well as they drew first blood through their outside center Anrudda Wilwara who did a brilliant loop with debutant wing three Shevaan Kapuwatte and score under the post. Thishan Wickramasinghe had no problem with the conversion. The Anthonians hit back hard with a push over try and came close to the Thomian score being 7-5. It was Anurudda ‘Wili’ again to score for the Thomians as he sped past couple of defenders and scored on the corner post. This extended the lead to 12-5.

The try of the match came in the second half when the Anthonian scrum half Dinesh Liyanage caught the Thomian defense napping and took a quick tap on their 22 and sprinted a good 70 meters to score under the post. The Thomians had enough and more opportunities to score but just couldn’t get the penetration needed. They could have capitalized on Antho having only 13 players on the field due to two players being in the bin. Captain Rajindra Gunasekara and last year’s skipper Shaveen Kapuwatte was guilty of dropping the ball on the try line and that cost them an easy 14 points. The stand out players for the Thomians were hooker Anjula De Silva, Sudarshan Muthuthanthri and Anurudda Wiliwara. For the Anthonians it was number 9 Dinesh Liyanage, skipper and full back Tharndu Chanaka and flanker Sajeed Lahir.

STC will go against Isipathana

SACK will play Wesley

Kings reign supreme against Pathana(22-15)

Kingswood College Kandy over powered the Isipathana team 22-15 at the Havelock Park grounds last Friday. Kingswood after being down 12-15 at half time came out with a very strong performance and achieved their second win of the season.

It was another solid performance by the Kings lead by Rajitha Sansoni who outplayed the Isipathana side especially in the second half. This was the second defeat faced by Isipathana in the league after going down to a strong Petes outfit last week. The first points were scored by the home team as they were awarded a penalty try and that gave the home team the lead by 7 points. Kingswoodians hit back immediately with two breathtaking tries, first by Mohamed Fazli and then by skipper Rajitha Sansoni who was the finisher of a well compiled move by the backs. The first conversion was successful, but the second failed.

Pathana were not going to give up easily and they hit back with vengeance through wing three quarter Umayanga Sooriyabandara. The conversion was not successful. They however managed to take the lead going into lemons through the boot of fly half Prashan Attanayake who slotted over a 25 meter penalty.

The second half saw the Kings going in strong with some brilliant offensive play. The next try for them came from winger Prabath Jayathileke and this got the visitors the lead. It was the up to the place kicker Oshan Perera to extend the lead through a penalty and he obliged putting it over. The final score was 22-15.

Petes Crush Cambrians-Goes In To The History Books

The Peterites scored 26 tries as they create a schools record of 90 points in the first half while Ranjan goes in with a record 8 tries in the game at Havelock Park. At the final whistle the Petes amassed 164 points to nil against a helpless POW side.

a12345.jpg

The Peterite Rugby team put up another splendid performance when they crushed Price of Wales College 164-0 at Havelock Park on Friday. The highlight of the game was the Peterites scoring as many as 14 tries in the first half to make 90 points which is a school rugby record. The highest score in a school rugby game was scored by Royal College Colombo against Royal College Panadura which was 172-0 in a friendly game but the Peterites now hold the record for the highest score in an ‘A’ division schools rugby game.

The Cambrians looked no match for the Peterites who scored their first try under 30 seconds from the kick off through skipper Keith Gurusunghe. They played at a rapid pace from then on till the end of the first half. From there on the Peterites scored 26 tries in the game with 14 in the first half and 12 coming in the latter.

There were several instances of individual brilliance by Winger Sandun Herath(5),skipper Keith Gurusinghe(3),Centre Banuka Nanayakkara, Full Back Kevin Wimaladasa and Replacement Winger Banuka Peiris who scored twice each for the Peterites. Winger Lakith Perera, Flanker Shenal Dias, Shan Weerakkody and Shenal Abeysekera also contributed to the win by scoring a try each. Scrum Half Rizwan Meedin too played a vital part in the game by making 13 conversions for the Peterites.

Nevertheless the most significant performance was put up by Outside Centre Dhanushka Ranjan who scored eight brilliant tries of which seven were scored in the second half for the Peterites. This feat enables Ranjan to surpass the record held by Winger Thilak Silva who scored 7 tries in the game against Nalanda in the 1988 unbeaten rugby season for Royal College under the leadership of Lasitha Gunaratne.

Antho Record First Win With Resounding 51-12 Win Against Wesley

It was St.Anthony’s all the way. The interschool league match played at Havelock Park saw a robust Anthonian line which penetrated the defense with some slick three-quarter moves. They lead the game 19-07 at half time.

big%20boy.jpg

The tabled was tipped in favour of the Eagles but it was Wesley College who drew first blood through their flanker Randika Tillekeratne who went over with full back Akram Assan adding the extra points. Anthonians after a string of good attacking moves scored 10 minutes later through Roshan Roche to level the score with the conversion.

After a short while the Anthonians put in some tactful three-quarter moves which gave way for center Dhanushka Ariyapala to score on the left hand side of the post and Sooriyabandara made no mistake with the conversion making it 14-07. Ariyapala showed a lot of skills which saw him penetrating the defense which ultimately gave him his second try of the match. At the short breather the Eagles lead the game 19-07.

The second half saw a completely different Anthonian side which meant nothing but business. The second half saw as many as 32 points being scored by the Anthonians to the 5 points of Wesley. Surprisingly for the second time of the match it was Wesley College who made the initial scoring through Akram Assan who barged his way over off a five meter scrum. This was the only form of scoring for the Wesleyites for the rest of the match as they were mere spectators to some brilliant moves by the Anthonians. No. 8 Sanka Rajaguru, skipper and centre Tharindu Chanaka, flanker Roshan Roche and scrum half Dinesh Liyanage went over for the Eagles in quick succession with fly half Chaminda Kumara making no mistake with the conversions. He stretched the lead with good a penalty in between the rampage.

It was Wesley’s third successive defeat of the tournament after going down to the Thora and Royal in the first two weeks. On the other hand it was a fitting win for the Anthonians after a thrilling match last week against the Thomians losing just by three points (15-12). The Anthonians under Priyantha Guneratne cannot be written off since they possess a lot of depth and experience. Wesley on the other hand will have to concentrate on the matches against POW and Dharmaraja the two diminutive teams in the league if they are to survive in the top division for yet another year.
