There is a foot path starts from Uda Maliboda tea factory to Sri pada via Sri pada Sanctury. The distance from tea factory to Sri pada is 12 km. The first 3 kms of the road is motarable but only by 4WD 2 years back. Then you will reach to the Pandeniya village which is bordering to the Sri Pada sanctuary. You have to cross the Pandeniya reiver & enter into the thick jungle where only a small foot path will leads to Medahinna ambalama on Kuruwita-Erathna-Sri pada road. The diatance from Pandeniya to Medahinna is 5 km, where you will not found any human being & will find "ali beti" also from the elephants living in Sri pada sanctuary. At about 4 km from Pandeniya, there will be a big river which is called by "Seeta gangula" in Udamaliboda - Sri pada road by the Uda Maliboda villagers. There is another 4 km from Medahinna to Sri Pada. Villagers told us no body is using this road during "Off-Sri pada season" & they will clear the road only when season starts.

Route -Colombo -> Dehiowita -> Deraniyagala -> Uda-Maliboda -> Dik-ellekanda -> Pandeniya -> Seeta gangula river>Medahinna ambalama (Where the route merge with Erathna trail) Sripada Summit

Tips/Special remarks

• Start from Pandeniya as early as possible
• Remember that it is a 8km tough walk to reach the Erathna trail from Pandeniya, not 5km as indicated in the board.
• Be rational when making decisions about crossing rivers on Deraniyagala route. Spending the night in the forest is not as bad as loosing your life to a rapid!
• Leeches are there in thousands in Deraniyagala trail, be prepared for them.
• Water is plentiful in Deraniyagala route but not so plentiful in Hatton route. So carry a small water bottle.
• There is 21km to the trail head from Deraniyagala. You can find public transport to cover about 15km out of this up to the Uda-Maliboda tea factory. We chose not to take a risk with public transport because we very well knew that we had no time to waste. We had to start from the trail head as early as possible to avoid having to spend the night in the middle of the peak wilderness sanctuary .

FYI,There are six known paths to the top of the Sripada. They are if I’m to list them according to the mostly used by the pilgrims:

1. Hatton Route.(Shortest)
2. Rathnapura aka Sri Palabaddala Route. (This is the trail where you can find the starting point of "Kalu" Ganga
3. Kuruwita aka Erathna Route.(Longest)
4. Rajamale Route.(Most Scenic)
5. Maliboda Route.(High elevation)
6. Dehenakanda aka Hapugasthenna Route.(Toughest)

This is also the ascending order in terms of difficulty as well. The distance ranges from 5km up to 14km depending on the trail. The shortest is believed to be the Hatton Route while the longest is the Kuruwita Route
