Team Sri Lanka can win the 2011 cricket World Cup!

Daily FT poll shows an overwhelming support for team and confidence of winning
SRI LANKANS are brimming with confidence over the World Cup, with a special Daily FT poll showing that 68% believe that the home team will be able to lift the trophy for the second time in history.

The survey, which was conducted by research specialists Pepper Cube, showed that the overwhelming response was for Sri Lanka to win the World Cup. Second favourites are Australia with 6% and India lagging behind with only 3%.
The confidence vote is lowest for New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan with each scoring only 1% due to low performance leading into the World Cup. Pakistan in particular has been hampered with match fixing scandals with key players being dropped from the core team leading to low team support from their South Asian counterparts.
A buoyant fan base of 67% is positive that Sri Lanka has the right team to win the 2011 Cricket World Cup with all age categories overwhelmingly agreeing that the core team has the correct combination of talent.
The urban and rural populations are almost equally in agreement with 73% and 62% respectively supporting the chosen team. The doubters are limited to only 9% but 24% prefer to wait until the matches construct reality.
Productivity is also likely to take a hit with the majority of those surveyed planning to watch the matches on TV or internet at office and home. Only 11% are planning to watch the match at the grounds with 64% preferring to catch the action on TV at home or office.
Surprisingly, 10% will not follow the cricket World Cup while 6% are unsure of their levels of interest. However, these are highly in the minority with 4% turning to internet and 1% to radio. Symbolising the gradual penetration of technology those who will be viewing the matches via internet is four times more than those turning on a radio.

'My decision may have been selfish but it was right'

-Kumar Sangakkara

130459.2.jpg

Your coach, Trevor Bayliss, said: "They [Sanga and Mahela] probably had enough of putting up with distractions. These days a captain has to deal with issues that sometimes have got nothing to do with cricket."
In modern-day cricket you get it. In the subcontinent you get a bit more. As a team we have tried to keep ourselves away from everything but cricket. Sometimes you can't. Unfortunately it can affect relations between players and administrators. It happens rarely, but certain vested interests try.
The reality of Sri Lankan cricket is this: everyone loves cricket, from administrators to normal people. They are always going to try to do [what they think is] the right thing in their way. Everyone might not agree on what the right thing is. And when you have such diverse opinions, you butt heads. It sometimes tires you out, stresses you out.
But to me there is nothing more fun than playing the game. In Sri Lanka we have established our own brand of cricket, like India have, Pakistan have. We established it in 1996. We are very proud of that. What Arjuna Ranatunga and his side gave us in 1996 is what we are trying to protect. We have been trying to take it forward, build on it, work on it and constantly improve.

Dilshan, Mathews ready for captaincy - Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara has said that the Sri Lankan board should choose a long-term captain as his successor and not give someone a caretaker role. Sangakkara said both Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews were ready for captaincy but said they should be given longer tenures if they are to be successful.
"You have to look long term. Not just what is good for now. If you want to go for Dilshan, give him the confidence for a long term," Sangakkara told ESPNcricinfo. "Don't give the captaincy to Dilshan and say, 'You are just going to be captain for a year and half.' It's not going to be good for him, for he is going to think, 'My days are numbered anyway.' And so it won't be good for the team.
"Both Dilshan and Angie [Angelo] are suitable. If they think Angie is too young then Dilshan will do a good job because he has these little touches for success. Anything he does on the field, he has this little knack. I don't know whether he will be the long-term candidate with his age, but if he keeps himself fit he can easily play the next World Cup.
"Or they can take the plunge with Angelo. That is where the selectors have to really make a call. Pressure will have to be shared, if they make a call and if things don't go well in the first or second year, they will have to be strong that they made a good decision. They will have to put everything possible in to make sure the captain has everything to do a good job. If it doesn't go well even after that, maybe you can re-evaluate."
Reflecting on his own decision to resign, Sangakkara admitted that it was partly selfish but said the majority of the decision was based on what he felt was good for Sri Lanka. "No matter how much I try to deny it, there is a lot of 'me' in that decision. Having said that a large part of the decision is what I think is the way forward for the team. The way forward is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Players come players go and so do captains. Yet teams progress. That is the natural progression.
Sangakkara said the administrators had the good of Sri Lankan cricket at heart but should never do anything that affects the players. "You can have your administrative scuffles but when it comes to playing cricket, players should not get involved with administration unless it's something that directly affects their performance. And administrators should never cross that line. If they can maintain that familiarity and at the same time the professional distance it would be great. It can go wrong. It has gone wrong at times."
Sangakkara said he took the decision to resign three months before the World Cup and that Mahela Jayawardene supported it. "I am not resigning because I am unhappy. I can do this for longer but I don't think it's the right thing for me or for the team. Another World Cup is coming up in four years. We think four years is a long time but suddenly you will realise two years have already gone and the system hasn't changed. A new guy is appointed with hardly any time to lead the team."
Sangakkara said the decisions to phase out Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas were the most difficult ones he took as captain. "It was a very delicate situation because Sanath and Vaasy are legends. You need to be 100% sure you are making the right decision. Personal likes and dislikes have nothing to do with what's best for the team. We are a family, but you have arguments, your problems - that's the way it should be, else nothing constructive is going to work."
Sangakkara said age wasn't the criterion to drop these players and that it was purely about performance and team combination. "Sanath and Vaasy missed selection [for the World Cup] by a whisker. It was unbiased: it's not about age. If someone is performing and contributing to the value of the dressing room, nothing else matters. It was a never a case of, oh he is old."

Afridi and Vettori to captain Sri Lanka’s “North-East” teams

Toptop-300x187.jpg

Six national captains, including four from Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardane, Kumar Sangakkara and T. M. Dilshan, will lead seven Provincial teams in the forthcoming Sri Lanka T20-Premier League (SL-T20-PL) Tournament. The seventh captain will be former Sri Lanka vice-captain, Chaminda Vaas. The Sri Lanka T20 Premier League will feature almost 35 international cricketing stars and will be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.
The event organisrs, Somerert Entertainment Ventures (SEV) have found a window for the tournament which is sandwiched between Sri Lanka's tour of England and Australia's tour of Sri Lanka.
The event will kick off on July 15th and will go on for 18 days. Twenty four hotly contested matches, including the two semi-finals and the final, will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium. There will be two matches on certain days.

Dashing opener T. M. Dilshan will lead Basnahira while Kumar Sangakkara (Kandurata), Mahela Jayawardane (Wayamba), Sanath Jayasuriya (Ruhuna) and Chaminda Vaas (Uva) will be the other captains.
Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi (Nagenahira) and New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori (Uthura) have been chosen to lead two provinces that were isolated from the game for ages due to the civil war.
Five overseas players could be registered to a provincial team but only four will be allowed to play in a match. Sri Lankan national selectors and cricket authorities have agreed to blood as many youngsters and almost 70 Sri Lankan cricketers will be registered in the seven team tournament.
Almost all Pakistani national cricketers will be invited to play in the SLPL. Factually, Sri Lanka was Pakistan's adopted home in the 2011 Cricket World Cup concluded last month as they played all their first round matches in Sri Lanka.
In addition to that, Chris Gayle and the Bravo cousins (Dwayne and Darren) from West Indies, Pathan brothers (Irfan and Yousuf) from India, Herschelle Gibbs, David Warner and Shaun Tait will be seen in action on Sri Lankan soil.
The availability of retired great Muttiah Muralitharan is not yet confirmed but some unconfirmed sources revealed that he is eager to play in the series.
Milind Rege, the tournament manager of the 2011 cricket World Cup will be in charge of all cricketing matters of the tournament. Rege is a former Ranji Trophy captain for Mumbai and recently retired from TATA corporation as a managing committee member.
