UPFA Parliamentarian stirs hornets’ nest?
A statement made by a UPFA Parliamentarian that Muslims who supported Pakistan during the cricket match that was played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan must leave the country, has stirred a hornets’ nest.
The Parliamentarian in question had apparently visited Muslim areas in Colombo and had demanded that they go to Pakistan for supporting Pakistan during the match.
The MP had also told them that housing in Colombo for the Muslims will not be considered by the government in the future.
Irked by this statement, the majority of the Muslims who are loyal to Sri Lanka have made representations to Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana.
Meanwhile, UPFA National List Parliamentarian A H M Azwer told The Nation that he was highly disturbed by the statement by the Parliamentarian and added he along with the governor have already raised this issue with President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.
Azwer said there was no truth that the Muslims en masse supported Pakistan and added it was not the government’s decision to ask Muslims to leave the country.
Meanwhile, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama in a statement called for unity among the Muslims and appealed to them to support the Sri Lankan team like in the past.
