Jan 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka's common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka has promised to give each unemployed graduate 3,000 rupees a month and 2,000 rupees a month to unemployed youth when he becomes the President at the upcoming presidential polls.
General Fonseka made these promises addressing the youth at a democracy meeting organized by the Jathika Yovun Peramuna of the United National Party yesterday (15) at Booker Hall in Colombo.
General Fonseka has earlier pledged to grant a 10,000 rupee pay hike to public servants and Rs. 2,000 monthly allowance for every senior citizen over 60 years if he was elected president.
While economists and politicians in the country muse over the feasibility of such lofty promises, Fonseka supporters say these pledges are achievable if the corruption is eliminated in the country.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe addressing the meeting said the country's youth must be integrated in the development process as they are the future of the country.
Wickremasinghe asked the youth to think progressively and act wisely at the upcoming elections and vote for their own good and for country's good.
Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, parliamentarians Ravi Karunanayaka and Sunil Handunetti also participated in the occasion,
