Feb 28, 2008 (LBO) -- Sri Lanka will teach arts and commerce subjects for pre-university students in English from this year, a senior government minister said.

Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers had approved a proposal by education minister Susil Premajayantha to start English medium instruction at 50 schools this year, information minister Anura Yapa said.

In Sri Lanka's fast growing service sector people with English skills command premium salaries.

Form the year 2,000 students in science and mathematics streams have had the option to be instructed in English if teachers are available.

The education ministry said from 2002 students from grade six had been given the option of learning, science, mathematics, social studies and health in the English medium and about 4,000 such students are now ready for the pre-university advanced level stream.

The facility to be instructed in some subjects from grade 6 to 11 is now available in 547 million a document submitted to the cabinet of minister said.

The ministry says will help orient Sri Lanka's education more towards the needs of a knowledge society that is open to global opportunties.

The education ministry has already started to train about 500 teachers to teach advanced level in English.
