Hi,

I spent a lot on surge protection because I run my PC as a server. Here is the image of my setup.

http://csoft-p.no-ip.info/roomsetup.png

I bought most of the surge protectors from American Best Brands, 8th Flood IBM Building. And the best part is if the protector gets damaged by a surge and stops working they replace it. Three year replacement warranty

I ran the server (PC) in many lightning storms and nothing happened :D.. well it did blow the trip switch, probably due to the live wire being grounded to suppress the surge

And who said you need to turn off your PC in lightning storms ;) If that was true.. people that run home based business that require 24X7 PC availability would be bankrupt.

Enjoy,
Chirantha

I've killed many PC's because of power surges, luckily got away with replacing PSU's and once capacitors on a mother board.

naha ban power surges and lightning.
Get a surge protector! And don't you have a UPS? The UPS will get damaged if you don't use a surge protector and it will save the PC. But I don't like to run around carrying a heavy UPS to be repaired. So I use the right tool for the job. That is a surge protector :D

Did you or did you not have the PC plugged through the UPS when the lightning hit your PC and broke it?

Once the UPS got busted got it fixed ... another time lightning hit the phone lines and took out my hub and PC motherboard. Another time long ago there was a power surge and it took out my PSU, at that time I didn't have a UPS.

Now the UPS batt is dead I can't be ar*ed to go get it fixed.

That is probably a fault in the motherboard.
