Sri Lanka has paid back a $1bn international loan ahead of a Tuesday deadline avoiding default on its foreign debt. Its economy was already struggling before the pandemic. But lock down measures and border closures have caused the vital tourism industry to collapse. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports.

We are doing ok because of import restrictions...but this is not a sustainable solution. Trade agreements usually do not work for long only in one direction. If we want to export, we need to import as well.

We can't rely on Tourism anymore. Any increase on Tourism should be considered a bonus.
We need to increase our exports as products (e.g. manufacturing/textile sectors) or services (e.g. IT/BPO sector)

The short-term plan should be to have an IT-based economy.
