Supreme Court says CID director should be removed

    2008-09-29 13:11:59

The three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva on Monday chastised the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the Attorney General for failing to take any action pursuant to the Lanka Marine Services Ltd (LMSL) 21 July 2008 judgment.

When the case came up for hearing on a motion by the petititioner Vasudeva Nanayakkara asking why no action has been taken following the judgment, the Chief Justice made mention of the fact that no action had been taken despite months since the judgment was handed down and said the Director of the CID should be removed.

The Court also issued notice on former Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera to appear on October8 and explain to the Court his new duties as Advisor (to the President) to ascertain if he is indeed holding public office after the Court clearly stated previously that he was not fit to do so. The Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) were present in court while Dr Jayasundera and Directors of John Keells Holdings were not present, as they hadn’t been noticed to appear.
