    Opterons: 12-core in 2010, 16-core in 2011

Talk about KAPOW, Batman! AMD revealed that its plans a 12-core Opteron processor in 2010, and a 16-core Opteron in 2011

While celebrating the Opteron processor's sixth anniversary, AMD offered a "glimpse" into the company's server platform roadmap, announcing that it plans to launch the six-core Opteron Istanbu processor in June. Fitting into the same platform as current quad-core Opteron processors, Istanbul will offer a 30-percent performance increase while using the same thermal envelope.

However, the company also revealed a few "meatier" Opteron offerings, complete with 12-core and 16-core versions expected to ship in 2010 and 2011 respectively. AMD said that a shift in consumer value has pushed the high-end server market into offering performance, expandability, and virtualization through more cores and scalability, thus resulting in the processors set to hit the server market within the next two years.

In 2010, AMD will launch the Opteron 6000 series for 2P and 4P servers, debuting on the G34 socket with the Maranello platform. The 6000 is geared towards performance and expandability, best suited for virtualization, databases, and HTC. Not only will the Opteron 6000 series be based on a 45nm 8-core (2 socket) and 12-core (4 socket) Magny-Cours run, but also offer 4 channels of U/RDDR-3, and up to 12 DIMMs per socket.

2010 will also bring along the Opteron 4000 series for the 1P and 2P server market, using the San Marino platform along with AMD's 45nm 4-core and 6-core Lisbon processor. AMD said that its 4000 series is ideal for power efficiency and value, geared for cloud computing, HPC, file and print sharing, and more. The San Marino platform utilizes the C32 socket, 2 channels of U/RDDR-3, and up to 4 DIMMs per socket.

As for 2011, AMD is expected to release two processors for both platforms. 32nm 12 and 16-core Interlagos processors will be available for the 6000 series, based on the "Bulldozer" core; it too will fit right in with the Maranello platform. Additionally, the 4000 series will also receive a CPU upgrade with the 32nm 6- and 8-core "Valencia" processor, fully compatible with the San Marino platform.

According to charts provided by AMD, the Interlagos16-core processor will nearly triple in floating point performance when compared to the Istanbul 6-core processor released in June; the Magny-Cours 12-core processor, released next year, will only offer double the performance. When compared to the quad core released in 2008, the Magny-Cours 12-core processor will more than double the integer performance; the "Interlagos" 16-core processor will triple the performance.

Still, despite the charts and all the boasting, seeing is believing, and we'll just have to wait until next year to see if charts and figures turn out to be real hands-on numbers. However, with all this processing power, desktop owners may feel left in the stone ages. Try not to worry: the Bulldozer processor will also fall into mainstream consumer's hands sometime in 2011 as well.

Unknown internet 1: Who controls the internet?

Unknown internet 1: Who controls the internet?

The official answer is no one, but it is a half-truth that few swallow. If all nations are equal online, the US is more equal than others.

Not that it is an easy issue to define. The internet is, essentially, a group of protocols by which computers communicate, and innumerable servers and cables, most of which are in private hands. However, in terms of influence, the overwhelming balance of power lies with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, based in Marina Del Rey, California.

ICANN is a not-for-profit organisation that regulates online addresses, known as domain names, and their suffixes, such as ".com" and ".org". Since ICANN reports to the US government's Department of Commerce, the domain name process is effectively overseen by the US government. China, Russia and Europe have all expressed concern at this situation because it means the US has leverage over the global coordination of the internet. "It has a role that is different from the role of all other governments," says Massimiliano Minisci, a regional manager at ICANN. "That's a concern around the world."

It is not hard to see why. Take, for instance, a scenario in which a country wants to change certain aspects of its domain names. Any changes carried out at the "top" level - adding new country-level suffixes, for example - have to be checked by the US Department of Commerce, which verifies that proper procedure has been followed. Once that check has been done, the actual implementation of the change is carried out by Verisign, a US-based private company that manages the root name database, which contains the full official list of recognised suffixes. "The US government could block a modification to this database," Minisci says. "So the US can, theoretically, decide who is on the internet and who isn't."

This unsatisfactory situation will be up for discussion by the parties involved in September 2009. So what can be done?

One drastic option would be to break the internet into chunks. A more realistic idea is for more governments to get involved with ICANN, while the most straightforward option would be for the US government to release its grip on ICANN. Milton Mueller, an internet governance expert at Syracuse University in New York, considers this outcome unlikely. "No one wants to let go. The thinking is that, at the crudest level, it's something under our control, so why mess with it?"

    How big is the net?

    How big is the net?

"The mind seemed to grow giddy by looking so far into the abyss of time," said the 18th-century scientist John Playfair, recalling the moment he learned of the Earth's long history.

If Playfair could peer into the depths of the internet he might get that giddy feeling again. In 2005, Google estimated the internet contained some 5 million terabytes of data - that's more than 1 gigabyte for each of Earth's 4.5 billion trips around the sun.

There are simpler ways to appreciate the internet's sheer scale. Recent estimates suggest that well over 1 billion people rely on computers to access the internet (see graphics of internet traffic in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008). Yet there are also a billion or so other people who use cellphones to visit cyberspace, making them as much a part of the online community as someone surfing from a PC.

Explore the exploding internet with our gallery of maps

That the internet is vast is undoubted. In July 2008, web surfers were introduced to Cuil.com, billed by its designers as "the world's biggest search engine". It indexed an impressive 120 billion pages, but shortly before its launch Google announced that its systems had registered a trillion unique pages (see Internet census 2007 and 2008).

Even this might represent a fraction of what is out there. Some estimates suggest that there could be hundreds of times more information stored on the internet than Google or Cuil have so far indexed.

One thing's for sure: the internet and its contents will continue to grow rapidly. According to Google, several billion web pages are added each day. And in the minute it has taken you to read this, the total has leapt by about 700,000. Index that!

See the network of submarine cables carrying internet traffic between the continents, and find out how much traffic they deal with.

    Do You Overclock Your PC?

    Do You Overclock Your PC?

There's no real shortage of processors and graphics cards these days. For every application and intent of building, there's a CPU and GPU that will fit your needs, and budget.

What's also equally apparent these days is that CPUs are very fast, relative to what was available just a few short years ago. This isn't to say that today's CPUs are significantly faster in clock frequency however--they're faster overall and significantly more efficient. Even Intel's Pentium 4 CPU was able to reach current CPU frequencies no problem.

When CPU clock frequencies were sub-gigahertz, overclocking brought in a significant boost in speed ratio. But today, with high frequency processors, overclocking doesn't nearly bring in as much, relatively. However, it must be said that getting more bang for your dollar is mainly what this is about, and squeezing every bit of performance from our components means a lot more than just the bottom line.

The question of the day is: Do you overclock your computers?

If you do, what kind of cooling do you use?

If you don't overclock, tell us why as well.

NEC Electronics Introduces World's First USB 3.0 Host Controller!

NEC Electronics Introduces World's First USB 3.0 Host Controller!

NEC today announces the world’s first USB host controller for the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard supporting USB transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps.

The µPD720200 is 10 times faster than previous USB 2.0. Take a 25GB file for example, USB 2.0 requires 14 minutes to transfer the data, while USB 3.0 only needs 70 seconds. The enormous increase in transfer speed will enable system designers to transfer large-volume data quickly and without stress and develop a new generation of high-performance consumer electronic products.

    1801.jpg

The chip measures 10*10mm, and consumes at most 1W. µPD720200 is fully backward compatible with the USB 2.0, 1.1 and 1.0 versions of the USB standard, and also supports recent high-performance computer interfaces such as PCI Express and SATA.

The samples of µPD720200 host controller are expected to be available in June 2009 at US$15, and monthly production will reach one million units in September 2009. NEC plans to exhibit the new controller at the SuperSpeed USB Developers Conference to be held in Tokyo, Japan from May 20-21, 2009.

KAWASAKI, Japan, DUESSELDORF, Germany, SANTA CLARA, Calif. (U.S.A.), May 18, 2009
"NEC Electronics today introduced the world's first Universal Serial Bus (USB) host controller (part number µPD720200) for the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard. NEC Electronics expects rapid adoption of the device and standard as the need to transfer larger and larger amounts of information between PCs to external hard-drives, portable electronics devices, and flash-based thumb drives, continues to grow rapidly.
The µPD720200 device is a host controller for PCs and other digital devices, and is based on the new version of the SuperSpeed USB standard. Supporting the world's fastest USB transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps) of data, which is 10 times faster than previous USB 2.0 transfer speeds. The NEC Electronics device, as well as the standard, is fully backward compatible with the USB 2.0, 1.1 and 1.0 versions of the USB standard.
With its high-speed transfer capability, the µPD720200 host controller makes it possible to expand the boundaries of digital appliances such as PCs, digital TVs, and DVD recorders. The new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 chip from NEC Electronics requires only 70 seconds to transfer 25 GB of video content on a blu-ray disc, compared to 14 minutes to transfer the same content when using the high-speed USB 2.0 with 480 Mbps transfer capability. This enormous increase in transfer speed will enable system designers to transfer large-volume data quickly and without stress and develop a new generation of high-performance consumer electronic products.
USB is the next-generation interface standard used in a wide range of electronic devices including PCs and PC peripherals. Originally designed as an interface for relatively low-speed computer peripherals, USB made it possible to connect keyboards, mice, and other devices with the same USB standard cables. Later, version 2.0 of the standard defined a high-speed transfer mode that made USB a practical and popular interface for devices such as digital televisions, digital cameras, and DVD recorders. USB version 3.0 builds on this success by offering a ten-fold increase in speed, for stress-free transfers of large volumes of data.
The high data transfer rate also offers compatibility with recent high-performance computer interfaces such as PCI Express® and SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), which are capable of data transfer at speeds in excess of 3 Gbps.
As a member of the USB Implementers Forum since 1996, NEC Electronics has played a leading role both in defining the USB standards and in developing USB technology. In 2000, the company launched the µPD720100, the world's first USB 2.0-compliant host controller chip. It has also developed hub controllers and an extensive lineup of other USB devices, all of which are certified to display the USB logo. As a result, the company has won the trust of the marketplace and shipped 161 million USB devices as of March 2009.
NEC Electronics expects the market for USB 3.0 products to begin a rapid expansion in 2010. SATA Spec 3.0 Now Official; 6 Gb/sec. Speeds

    SATA Spec 3.0 Now Official;
    6 Gb/sec. Speeds

    File:SATA_ports.jpg

    200px-SATA_ports.jpg

The Serial ATA International Organization has today made official the Serial ATA Revision 3.0 specification.

The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) today made official the Serial ATA Revision 3.0 specification. The new interface now offers up to six gigabits per second (Gb/sec.) via a high-speed serial data link between storage units, disk drives, optical and tape drives, and more. The new 3.0 spec also offers enhancements to support multimedia applications, enhancements for increased functionality, and is even backwards compatible with earlier SATA implementations 1.5 and 3 Gb/sec.

“As speed becomes critical to today’s storage, the SATA Revision 3.0 specification doubles the maximum transfer speed enabled by technology, paving the way for a new generation of faster SATA products,” said Knut Grimsrud, SATA-IO president and Intel Fellow and director of storage architecture. “SATA-IO members will be able to design for their customers products with the speed they crave, without compromising the quality and performance they’ve come to expect from SATA technology.”

In addition to maintaining low cost and low power consumption via improved power management capabilities, the SATA-IO also provided a few general highlights with today's announcement. A new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) streaming command will be available in 3.0, enabling isochronous data transfers, specifically for audio and video applications that consume large chunks of bandwidth. 3.0 also provide a new connector designed to accommodate 7mm optical disk drives suited for thinner and lighter notebooks. A small, Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector will also be available for more compact 1.8-inch storage devices.

SATA-IO said that network administrators and computer equipment manufacturers will see an immediate benefit after moving from SATA 3 Gb/sec. to SATA 6 Gb/sec., with data transfers now taking half the amount of time; hard drive caching will experience faster transfers of short bursts of data. The SATA 6 Gb/sec. connection also minimizes the throughput bottleneck suffered by today's faster solid state drives; future SSDs will require 6Gb/sec. connectivity. With the reduced latency of SATA 6 Gb/sec., RAID performance will dramatically improve, workstation applications will perform better, and storage area network drives will experience an increase in data streams, boosting storage network density and efficiency.

The SATA-IO also added that the same cables and connectors used for current SATA environments could be used to connect SATA 6 Gb/sec. devices. However, cables already maxed out using the current 3 Gb/sec. operating margins will not perform quite as well using the new SATA 6 Gb/sec. because of an increased number of resends. The SATA-IO basically recommends that end-users utilize "quality components to ensure data integrity and robust operation" at the faster rate. Put simply, buy new cables.

"The SATA interface has developed into the de facto standard HDD interface in computing applications," said John Rydning, research director for hard disk drives at analyst firm IDC. "The new SATA Revision 3.0 specification builds upon the current market success of SATA, and will help to solidify SATA as the predominant storage device interface technology for the foreseeable future."

Gmail Outage Caused by Overloaded Servers

    Tuesday, September 01, 2009 11:10 PM PDT
A worldwide outage of Google's Gmail online e-mail system on Tuesday was caused by a traffic jam on its servers, according to Google's official Gmail blog.

The problem was that some recent changes designed to improve traffic flow on request routers, servers designed to direct Web queries to the appropriate Gmail server, overloaded the system after workers took some Gmail servers offline to perform routine upgrades.

"As we now know, we had slightly underestimated the load which some recent changes placed on the request routers," Ben Treynor, site reliability Czar wrote on the Gmail blog. "At about 12:30 p.m. Pacific a few of the request routers became overloaded and in effect told the rest of the system "stop sending us traffic, we're too slow!". This transferred the load onto the remaining request routers, causing a few more of them also to become overloaded, and within minutes nearly all of the request routers were overloaded."

The overload resulted in people around the world being unable to access Gmail for about 100 minutes, Treynor said, though he noted that IMAP/POP access and mail processing continued to work normally.

Gmail engineers were alerted to the problem within seconds of the failures and after figuring out what the problem was, brought additional request routers online. Now, Gmail is more than 99.9 percent available to users, he said.

"We've turned our full attention to helping ensure this kind of event doesn't happen again," he wrote.

One fix the company plans to make is to ensure request routers will work better by having them slow down when overloaded instead of refusing to accept traffic. Treynor said the request routers need to have sufficient failure isolation so that a problem in one data center doesn't affect servers in another data center.

The company will work over the next few weeks to make these changes and further improve reliability, he said.
