Things to know about Dhamma

Dear friends,

Thought to post a link to a Deshana on "Potthapada Sutta" by Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero...

In addition to the Sutta, the Thero briefly presents few points on Sasthru Sashana, history of Dhamma, start of Mahamevnawa, etc. in the introductory part.

I personally think this Deshana as one worthy to listen to (as it clarifies a lot of misinformation).

Even this Sutta from Dhiganikaya is special, as it explains few things not disclosed elsewhere... It will surely clarify misinformation we have got about Mano Kaya...

Hope you are already doing that. This post is only for those still not attempted it...

My friends, we should not be afraid to read/listen Dhamma. We might not understand all (our aim is realizing them some day... as much as we can during this life time...). So no need to worry if they are difficult to follow.. But following them would become easier as Dhamma develops in us...

About shraddha: Shraddha you have will be more than enough to start... Shraddha will grow as we understand how true Dhamma is.. even listening to deeper aspects and trying to compare it against ourselves is good...

As we know well if one sees Paticcasamuppada, he/she will see Dhamma.
Shall we focus the discussion to these aspects?

I feel that following Sutta will provide a good overview of Paticcasamuppada, Ayathana, Upadanakkanda, Asava, Kamma, Dhathu, etc...

These Suthra were intended for those having basic Shraddha... because they reveal a lot of deep aspects that we should be aware of...

It was through Deshana by Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero that I learn Shri Sadhdharma. And I have not spend more than 1 1/2 years practicing it. So I too am a beginner. I accept what in these Deshanas to be true; because I had examined them a lot against Dhamma text before I came to conclusion that Ven. Thero is a member of "Shrawaka Sangha". I am not asking you to believe me; please see for yourselves..

As we know Shri Saddharma is like a great ocean gradually getting deeper starting from its shore... (reference: Paharada Sutta; deshana on it: http://www.gautamabuddha.org/downloads/mp3/6/6.8_paharada_sutta.mp3 )

If you are a beginner to "true" Shri Sadhdharma (because what we learn at schools are somewhat different... ) better to listen to introductory ones too...

Another important thing is to start practicing a small meditation like Anithya Bhavanawa; which gives us deeper insight into Dhamma.

We should be always mindful that our mind is deceiving. If we experience/conclude something not in accordance with Dhamma, it is our thinking that's wrong - not Shri Sadhdharma. Best way is to check with Dhamma text or ask someone you can safely assume to be a Kalyanamithra.

Another thing is being modest; what we know/feel/realize is very little.. After all our aim is trying to realize Dhamma to our capability...

Thought to add few more points... I am a beginner please correct me/add more if you feel like...

Yes, we should do it logically; justifiably.

If Shraddha starts to develop as we learn more and examine ourselves/world against Dhamma we are in the correct Path. This Shraddha is called "Akarawathi Shraddha" which is justifiable unlike "Amulika Shraddha" (i.e. baseless). We come to this on realizing that characteristics of Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha are True (because we can see evidence in Dhamma and what we experience).

When listening to Dhamma:
- Do not be afraid/discouraged if a feeling of knowing little comes; Perhaps the feeling can be made a point to focus more and more on Dhamma
- Better to make short notes in the begining; the need might get less important as we practice Dhamma more and more...
- Meditations like Anithya Bhavana, Panchaupadanakkhanda bhavana, etc. are really helpful as they helps us to maintain Yoniso Manasikara

Dharmaya ahaddhi Shraddhawa poddak hari ethi vunoth vitharane e anuva kenek hithanna ganne (neththam mokada venada vage hitha hitha inne nethiva mohothak hari Dharmaya anuva hithanne... ) Anna echcharak Shraddhawa ethi vunath ehti... Ita passe Dhaham maga vivurthayi...

- neththam api ape hithatama revatenna puluvan...
- Dharma margaya thula anek de samaga Shraddhava th vedenava; kenek margayata enne Shraddhanussari vimen ne... Ita passe Sowan weddi Dharmaye sathyathawa gena avabodhayen piligannava (etha kota thami shraddhawa sthira venne...) oya wage...

Udha: Chanki Suthraye budhurajanan wahanse deshana karala thiyenawa lokaye onema deyak igena ganna krama 5: Shraddha (oya amulika shraddhwa), Ruchi (kemettha), Anussawa (ahapu nisa), Akarapariwithakka (tharkayata gelapena hinda), Dhittinijjanakkanthi (mathayak lesa piligena).
