Over the years, people of varying types emigrated from Sri Lanka to the US, European countries, Australia New Zealand and other SE Asian countries. During the years gone by it was mostly skilled who went out for family reunions. More recently and with the war there were true and bogus asylum seekers ruling the day. Most Boat People land in boats and ask for asylum. I know of a guy from the majority community in Sri Lanka who claimed asylum showing some injuries he had from a traffic accident as an assault by law enforcement.
After that, there were crooks and money launderers, sons and daughters of politicians and officials who plundered the country and took the money out by illegal means to lead a trouble-free life overseas. They live out of plundered money without any employment. Case in point former head of a failed bank who is spotted in the UK and many scoundrels roaming the foreign cities scot-free.
Many are genuine professionals and skilled workers who have applied through skilled immigration and doing well. Wish them well for keeping the flag flying
