A 'C' in the local O/L English being considered as a sufficient value in language for a solely English-based tertiary course in a primarily English-speaking country?

Do you know anyone who has got in solely on that merit?

Which universities are these?
yes

Sheffield University (UK top 20 university) is one university that accepts Sri Lankan OL's

    God Bless Sri lanka
    Ah in Invercargill

Its not a University, but a polytechnic. They'll take in students passing out from O/L and above because they dont exactly offer degree programmes or higher. What are you expecting to follow at SIT?

yes a polytechnic...a government institute i think...they do have degree programmes, post graduate, diploma programmes...im planning to do digital filmmaking..

No. I dont think that they are Government-owned. There are no Government operated polytechnics. But I believe that they do have the student subsidy. Its pretty cheap for locals and Maoris to pursue higher education, just as 15% of what an international student would pay.

So how is your application going? You'll be starting your course in February I believe?

not the sri lankan OL eng. grade C i guess..
for English most of the unis need either IELTS more than 5.5 or London OL English more than C grade or equivalent

    Hmm..

You do know how the local O/L English paper is right? I'm quite puzzled on how this University accepts it as enough. Looks like the British Education system is loosing its quality, as I long suspected.
I have heard that Sri lankan OL's are tougher than GCSE's :oo:

    UK education is very good

When it comes to rankings many US schools are on the top with UK schools

some UK universities accept Sri lankan o/l english (english language requirement) for degree level courses

government only requires IELTS etc. for below degree level courses

noo even for the degree level those who dont have above C grade for London OL English had to do IELTS but above 4

You've got to see one of the Local O/L English papers to see what I'm saying.
Its practically very basic and easy. Students going with only that knowledge in English are going to have a tough time with Academic writing, conversations and big time trouble with peers. I really can't picture how this system works.

Thats exactly what I meant when I said that the British Education system is loosing quality, pretty soon it will be more like a foreign location for the Sri Lankan institutes like ANC or ACBT. I doubt the new Visa reforms would do any good to restore lost educational quality.
