Mystery surrounds the sudden arrival of four officials from the United Nations Human Rights section which has not been intimated to the Foreign Office in Colombo, authoritative sources disclosed.
The four officials of the UN hailing from Australia, Afghanistan, and Nepal are now occupying the oldest hotel in the city of Colombo, sources said. They noted that the arrival of these officials had violated all diplomatic norms and protocol, which are mandatory under the UN Convention.
Well informed sources disclosed that some diplomats from the US Embassy in Colombo have visited this hotel and speculation was rife of meets between US officials in Colombo and the UN officials now occupying the hotel. Eyebrows are raised over the mysterious arrival of these UN officials which is timed with the ongoing UNHRC sessions in Geneva where a controversial US backed resolution against Sri Lanka is on the agenda for vote on March 23.
As this edition went to press, officials at the External Affairs Ministry in Colombo were in touch with the immigration authorities to find out the modus operandi adopted by the UN officials in question over their mysterious journey to Colombo.
