Thousands of undergraduates are now marching to Temple Trees with a 100-metre long petition that calls for safeguards to school education and for the immediate suspension of plans to open up private universities.

Representing all campuses, more than 5,000 students gathered at Sri Jayewardenepura University this morning under the banner of the Inter University Students Union.

Its convener Udul Premaratne told 'Lanka Dissent' that the petition, to be handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, calls for an immediate halt to the destruction of school education.

It also urges the government not to go ahead with plans for more private universities and for fee-levying courses at state universities.

According to our correspondent at the scene, High Level road is experiencing heavy vehicular congestion due to this march by undergraduates.

Thousands of university students have been given a warning not to proceed further along Galle Road from the Bambalapitiya junction by Police who said that LTTE members may try to infiltrate the protestor march.

The protesters were told that if they have a memorandum, to hand it over to the Police but this request was ignored by the students who are continuing the march towards Temple Trees.

Nearly 3,000 university students who are marching along the High Level road have now reached Havelock Road which has caused a major traffic block in the area.

Buses along the 138 route have been disrupted, Police said.

The students are attempting to march towards Temple Trees to protests against the privatization of higher education.
