Ruling UPFA MP Sarana Gunawardena has been hospitalized following a failed attempt to rig votes in Ratnapura, reports said.

The Gampaha district parliamentarian, in cab 253-8917, and around 25 of his supporters, in private bus 62-8234, had gone to the polling centre at St. Joachim Tamil School at Karapincha.

Wearing red shirts and red caps, they had tried to disguise themselves as JVP supporters, but the attempt had failed when area residents had recognized the MP.

The angry crowds, hurling stones at the interlopers, had then driven them away.
