The Pentagon is moving forces closer to Syria as the U.S. weighs its options in the conflict there, U.S. Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has suggested.
He gave no details, but media reports say the U.S. Navy is strengthening its presence in the eastern Mediterranean.
U.S. navy aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman & four missile ships are operating near Syria.
U.S. officials said military planning and targeting have been underway for the last two years. "We've already got the Syrian government and military targets lined up," one of the officials said — including the defense and interior ministries.
Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, told reporters Friday that "all options remain on the table when it comes to Syria."
More than 1000 people have died in the recent gas attack, reports said.
Syria is believed to have large undeclared stockpiles of mustard gas and sarin nerve agent.
More than 100,000 people are believed to have been killed during the Syrian war.
