STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBO, setting aside all their differences and dissenting voices for a moment, campaigned for a worthy cause and offered an exemplary moral boost to fighting soldiers by way of donating 170 craters of bottled water to the Army, during a brief meeting at the University College House, held Wednesday (17).

Appreciative of the commitment and dedication of the valiant soldiers, students at the Arts faculty in coordination with Colombo University Students’ Counseling office, have organized this valuable project after collecting financial support from fellow-students on the campus. One other motive of the project was to promote the morale of the fighting Wanni troops and to remind War Heroes of the concerns, expressed by members of the civil society.

The programme under the theme, “Awasan Binduwa Thekma, Pelagaesemu Api Owun Wenuwen” (Let us rally round on behalf of them until our last drop dries), was also poised to create awareness among the student community in other Universities.

A senior Army Officer representing the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Colonel A. K Suraweera acknowledged the donation and praised the students and their lecturers for their considerateness and generosity. The stock was to be sent to Wanni Security Forces Headquarters shortly, the meeting was told.

Professor Ms. Shanika Hirimburegama, Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo, acting Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Indralal de Silva, Senior Student Counselor, Dr. Premakumare de Silva and Mr. Indika Bandara Abeykoon addressed the occasion. A minute silence was observed in memory of the fallen War Heroes before the proceedings got underway. Ms. Dinushi Chandrarathna raised the vote of thanks.
