    Subaru WRX STi TV Commercial

These interesting videos and pictures come from Subaru who are launching a new television commercial for the 2011 WRX STi. This isn’t your typical advertisement, and you must watch both the videos to get a good understanding of how they did it, flip book style. Subaru used an old school zoetrope style animation with the entire tv spot frame by frame on the side of a test track.

Next came the STi with a camera attached to the side, one foot away from the wall, accelerating as fast as possible down the track to create the illusion of animation. It’s great to see the car outrun a giant mechanical spider, however I think I’d still prefer to see the Subaru STi rally car on the dirt track spewing clouds of dust from the all-wheel-drive.

    Unichip Subaru Impreza

For those who are not satisfied with the performance numbers of their 4WD Subaru Impreza 2.0 Diesel, the Unichip tuners have released an upgrade that is surprisingly not for the Subaru STi model. Using the latest plug and play technology, the U-Connect piggy back ECU tuning software enables subtle electronic tweaks. Enhancing the Impreza’s fuel and boost output, the performance gains are quite significant. After being tested on the dyno, the new electronics added 17 bhp and 36 lb ft of torque over the stock Subaru Impreza Model.

Final performance figures show 168 bhp with 292 lb ft of torque delivered to the notorious Subaru all-wheel-drive system. Which is more like “all we’ll drive” if you ask any Subaru owner. Thanks to its easy-fit design, the new piggy back system can me mounted or removed from the ECU in very little time. At the same time, the unit is electronically invisible to main Subaru dealers, so you won’t have to worry about voiding your warranty. However, all remapping can only be done by a Unichip agent. Check out the charts from Unichip on how much of a boost the Subaru Impreza 2.0 Diesel received. Now we’re just waiting for them to release a ECU tuning upgrade for the Subaru STi.

    Subaru Impreza WRX STi Trax

Subaru revealed their Impreza WRX STi Trax at the SEMA Motor Show with some amazing custom work that would be difficult to duplicate. Built for the snow tracks, the Subaru WRX STi Trax boasts 400 hp and was modified by Vermont SportsCar. Originally for famous STi driver Ken Block, the Subaru features a Mattraks rubber track system that comes second to none. The car has a completely gutted interior that was fitted with a multipoint steel roll cage, and seam-welded for extra support. Inside the Subaru Impreza are Recaro SPA ProRacer competition seats, carbon fiber door panels, and a fire suppression system.

Made for the snow, Vermont SportsCar included a Yakima FatCat 4 Snowboard Rack, Yakima Landing Pad rack base, and DC Shoes XFB-C Snowboards. Under the hood is the stock four-cylinder turbocharged 2.5-liter engine capable of producing 400 hp and 400 ft lbs of torque with its MOTEC M800 ECU tuning. To power those large rubber track wheels, Vermont SportsCar had to install a KAPS 5-speed dog-engagement gearbox which helps the Subaru DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential). Being an extremely unique car, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi Trax also features a custom carbon fiber sleigh that fits four passengers and rides on steel skis.

    COBB Subaru WRX STi

If you’re wanting the best bang for your buck, you should consider the newly redesigned Subaru WRX STi tuned by COBB Tuning. They are an American tuning company from the Salt Lake City area that specializes in tuning Japanese makes and models. For this particular build they refrained from major upgrades that would require rebuilding the engine or upgrading the turbo, and instead took the economical approach to attract the daily driven STi’s, and those people who occasionally take them to the track on the weekends. The performance upgrades include a 3-inch downpipe with full catback exhaust, cold air intake, and their AccessPORT system which boosts this Subaru’s stats to 350 hp/353 ft-lbs of torque.

With these upgrades it was able to run a 12.9 second 1/4 mile and the all wheel drive makes an astonishing 4.3 second 0-60 time. COBB also added their Stage 2 Suspension package which consists of sport springs and front/rear anti-roll bars. These suspension upgrades produced amazing handling and braking numbers, however for being a rally car, drivers can expect some unpleasant road noise at times. The gold 18-inch Prodrive GC05 wheels look great and are wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888s, which keep this all wheel drive rally car glued to the pavement.
