    I already added following lines to the menu.lst file of grub. Is that the problem? Before I added this line shutdown halted and showed the CLI

    acpi=off apm=power_off

    Why did you turn off acpi and apm ? is there a problem ?
    Also did the shutdown command work ?

    i googled my problem and found that grub editing part. Anyway i deleted that one too. but your command is not working too :( same shit happened
    you turn off acpi and apm only if the kernel has problems with the mobo.
    if that's the case shutdown may not work properly. After you get the blank screen and HDD stops, just power down from the switch.
    Also better try a kernel upgrade or a different distro that fully supports your mobo.

    after I reverted grub menu.lst file hdd is not stopping :(
    you definitely have a mobo-kernel incompatibility.
    BTW, are you running Ubuntu ? its known to have acpi and apm related issues with the .04 releases.
