Debian is superb (now i'm writing this with deb), but i dun prefer it for a home advance user .
don't go for ubuntu if you wanna get the real linux experience.

Fedora is better
if you wanna have real gud user friendliness and nice look, then go for Linux Mint. its way better

And I thought it was pretty much the same as ubuntu with codecs and a much better theme?

dun't count on that. they got a prob with 'anaconda' @ the last minute.. so we have to wait
