As most of us in SL, i too was a guy who was living on a pirated versions xp. And spends countless number of times on the internet to find the best software and the cracks and the serial numbers for it. And when it comes to Windows, No matter what you do there's always a new Virus. and no matter what you do whether you press, HEAL, QUARANTINE, Or DELETE on your virus gaurd, it doesnt seems to go away right? well then there you go and try to find cracks of kaspersky or mcafee on the net or reformatting your hard drive.
. Well i came across with the same problem. And i was doing my coursework in the degree i was following and formatting of the hard drive was not an option. But i had a Ubuntu Live CD. So i thought it cant be that bad, so i tried it, and i was soo impressed with the gui and the fuctionality it had, i mean its soooooooo stable. not like Xp. runs smooth and never crashes.
Now im Using Ubuntu and im glad to say that im independant over windows. Yes, its really hard to hop in to a new OS, but there are lot resources in the Internet where you can get help from forums dedicated to ubuntu and live online help (using IRC).. Getting used to play with ubuntu is the most easiest thing cuz of that.
It has all the things we ever need...
like a cool Chat manager, flv players, media encoders, rippers, media players, supports a lot of media types, and a handy Office manager, lots of programming resources...
with a few adjustments here and there, you could get your ubuntu box the No1 OS ever made.
my ubuntu looks more pleasant than XP. and ive full control over how it looks, ive attached a screen shot of my ubuntu desktop.

[sorry about the quality]
And no operating system is completed without games right?
well im playing Warcraft 3, Counter Strike And Unreal Tournament inside ubuntu. They all work smooth.

Nice Eh?
I hope you guys too feel the freedom of FOSS ..
