I'm really waiting until you get bored with this thread.

now since that "someone" you refer above is me, I must clarify my stance. the reason I said rapidshare is better is due to it's reliability in file hosting.
file hosting is a real serious business, it's a process needing extreme dedicated bandwidth and large volumes of storage space, a good multiserver environment to prevent deadlocks, resistance to DDOS is a must. Rapidshare has those. So it's reliable. I can host a file and not worry about it going down (let's say the file is not illegal content) as long as it's active.

All the above doesn't mean I'll not dump rapidshare if a better service comes out. Everything I said in this thread and your thread is valid and not contradictory. :)

I must ask you again, why do you say winrar is better. I'll agree with you if you can provide some reasonable statistics on why it's better. I still seriously think, that you may have some deal with the brothers Alexander and Eugene Roshal

winrar got 8
7zip got * 

What else

How can we argue with a dumb ass like you? You don't know how to argue anything....And best of all, you don't know why WinRAR is better!!!

What if I prove 32bit 7-zip is faster than WinRAR? :P

Ok, here are the videos:

7-zip video: (36 seconds)
http://www.egoshare.com/04261650ebc5dd1d67ad9423cdf3ce66/7zipwmv.html (116kB)

winrar video: (1 minute 18 seconds and still only 37% done!!!  :P :P :P)
http://www.egoshare.com/2ae021c5297ef6209f0e328f0ed8eb98/winrarwmv.html (256kB)

* Windows Media Encoder is freaking awesome!! Never thought I could get this high quality levels at that file size on 75% quality level.

This is the folder I compressed:
foldertz7.jpg

This folder contained mostly documents, and couple of videos as well...

This is the system specs (did it in a VirtualBox WinXP virtual machine...)
systemri7.jpg

If you don't know, VirtualBox only allows 32bit guests, so XP was 32bit and both appz were 32bit. No other app was installed other than these two.

Compression settings used:
WinRAR: RAR, default settings
7-Zip: ZIP, default settings

    Excellent work Anusha!
I was thinking about doing another test, now it's not needed. :) :)

I wish VirtualBox supported 2 cores, otherwise I could have shown them head to head (using same amount of CPU resources). WinRAR losing by miles :D

If you watched the video, WinRAR has about 2 minutes remaining. This means, even WinRAR is slower than 7-zip, not by a fraction, but 6 times!!! (Not always, but this is a generic folder, so this should represnt general folder archiving....)

One more thing to note. This is done on a PC with 192MB RAM!!! People say 7-zip uses a lot of RAM, but XP SP2 with 192MB RAM???? 7-zip just doesn't want to let us down :D

Also, 7-zip compressed to ZIP  ZIP??? Isn't that the format people think is too "dull" for 2007 :D

I was first suprised to see your test pc had only 192MB RAM, then I saw it's a VirtualBox. I really hope you allocated only that much of RAM, not your PC having only 192MB RAM even being a dual core system.

Expanding upon what you did, I tested winzip winrar and 7zip for a double kick to Ranga.

    The Computer:
    syspropertiesfx8.jpg

Note: All programs are 32bit to even the playground.

    Test 1
The folder size is 300MB, contains five video files (.wmv)
    test1lk8.jpg

    7Zip: http://www.egoshare.com/57c025aef993744314313ca7693da730/7zip1wmv.html (7zip takes 30sec)
WinZip : http://www.egoshare.com/c5dec704e998e61f75d2f0f27c51ec8d/winzip1wmv.html (winzip takes 40 sec for legacy zip)
    WinRar : http://www.egoshare.com/847815e8c64c1540639e43f95e7aa597/winrar1wmv.html (1min video winrar processed 40%)

Interesting observation: 7zip compresses zip faster than winzip when doing these videos (10sec difference)

    Test 2
The folder size is again 300MB, contains assorted pdfs docs and jpgs
    test2mn7.jpg

    7Zip : http://www.egoshare.com/dc58139d111d962dfb4ecf17c131a5ad/7zip2wmv.html (41sec)
WinZip : http://www.egoshare.com/9b276c0445ea1d3e38e05e552d30021e/winzip2wmv.html (about 39sec again legacy zip)
    WinRar : http://www.egoshare.com/549bf6b8855b589d9a9a52535808d490/winrar2wmv.html (1min video winrar processed 33%)

Compressing these assorted files WinZip seems to be on par or better by 2secs.

winrar seems to need atleast 5 times(I'm being generous in estimating poor winrar) more time than 7zip to do a compression job. That's similar to your observation of winrar being 6 times slower than 7zip :D

The interesting thing is 7zip is on par with winzip, or sometimes faster than winzip when doing zip format :) No need to talk about winrar.

Now Ranga, the ball is in your park  Give us some statistics of your winrar.
Statistics mean benchmarks not things such as this:
    winrar: used by zillions
    7zip: used by negative infinity
lol your lovely purple color

I don't know why I still continue trying to inject some reasoning in to your dead brain. You are really beyond the limits of reasoning.

PS: You can have my sig which states "beyond lunacy". It suits you better. :P
