clock speed is not all you have to see. c speed, bus speed\width, bandwidth ++++

even though clock speed and bandwidth are high , there are compatibility issues.

like though some ATI cards are higher in Bus\ clock speeds, they give low frame rates when compared with Nvidia cards with low Bus \clock speeds in most games
Well, you are missing the whole thing. It is not the clock speed that matters. Even in the same hardware, it is pretty much the memory bandwidth and fillrate (texture and vertex, but there is no such differentiation in DX10 afaik) that matter.
Fillrate = core clock speed * pipeline (but this is not valid since the introduction of ROPs and shader processors)
Mem bendwidth = mem clock * memory bus width (128bit, 256bit etc.) this is still valid

Look Here

See the Pixel fill rate n Texture fill rate.......The ATI cards core clock n memory clock is higher......bt overall Nvidia has a lot more.... well lets just say "more power"

Visit ww.tomshardware.com Goto VGA charts and there you can select the your desired and have a good idea of them performing in like 50 diff benchies.Think of your needs and grab the one.Me?Surely the 7900GT/GS.IMHO the GS is better in OCing.

Lets put it easy on this way.All ATI X and after disobeyed the pipeline definiton. And in DX10 and after it went more complicated so you cant call it a pipeline.
