TDK, Mitsubishi, Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, Imation are all generally good brands. But these brand names means very little when it comes to the quality of a disk. Because, the actual disk manufacturer and the final distributor is different. For example, TDK might sell DVDs from many different companies (i.e Ricoh, Ritek, Prodisk, and then obviously their own TDK) under their brand name, same goes for other companies as well. In reality, the brand you see on the final package has little or no relation to the actual manufacturer.
So what is important at the end is the actual manufacturer, you can find it out by checking the manufacturer ID AKA media code/ID of the disk. But unfortunately, you can't easily find it out by looking at the disk or the packaging. Some companies print it but very rarely. Normally you have to use a software tool like DVDInfo or Nero to check the Media Code.
You can
look here for various Media Codes and how they are graded according to quality.
I dont think I answered your question exactly.. but now you see that it is not a very straight forward question to answer..
