Find out the type of the network type. WEP or WPA or some other 802.11 encryption he is using. you can see the type when you try to connect to it.
some general info =>
WEP - easy to crack week
WPA2 - TKIP encrypted => some what possible, need to capture air packets when someone authenticates with the AP
WPA2 - AES encrypted => god damn hard, impossible in other words in most cases.
802.11 => dunno much. But this is some hardware based new encryption technology. so most probably he wont be using it (coz both AP & Client must support this new tech). But if he is using then it'd be very hard to crack.
Other than this => cracking the air path to AP means you get connectivity upto AP. If he has configured some access list policies with mac ids then you're in truoble again. ( you need to allow your mac
