Several killed by flash floods in Genoa, ITALY
Efforts to clear up after flash floods killed six people in Genoa are being hampered by continuing rain.
The Italian port city saw the equivalent of a third of its annual rain fall in just six hours on Friday, causing rivers to break their banks.
Emergency services are checking mud-filled ground floors and basements, while some locals say deaths could have been avoided had schools been closed.
“It’s absurd,” said one woman. “There is a flood warning and what do you do? You open schools and kindergartens. Why did those mothers die? Because they went to pick up their children. Had the kids been home, we wouldn’t have had all these deaths.”
While Genoa is still under threat, the danger is now spreading to nearby La Spezia. Already two villages near the town have been evacuated and dozens of small mudslides have blocked roads.
The whole area is being kept on a level two alert, described as “very high”, until Sunday evening.
And still the rain keeps coming.
One emergency worker explained he and his team were doing their best to check drains, etc. so the land could absorb as much water as possible.
Meanwhile, questions are being raised over recent changes in planning laws, allowing building to take place much closer to rivers than before.

More than 50 people are in hospital, with at least 10 reported to be in a critical condition. Police warn the death toll is likely to rise.
The accident happened on the busy M5 motorway and involved more than 30 cars and trucks.
One of those was a fuel tanker, and witnesses say a fireball that engulfed numerous vehicles hampered initial rescue efforts.
The accident near Taunton in Somerset happened in wet and foggy conditions.
One motorist at the scene said: “It is an absolute tragedy, you just can’t think what people are going through, just waiting to see what has happened or who is in the wreckage.”
Another man said: “We were driving down the road and saw what we thought was a bonfire. But obviously it transpired to be vehicles that were on fire.”
An investigation will also examine whether a nearby fireworks display might have played a part in the tragedy.
The M5 is closed in both directions and police say it could remain shut until Sunday.

Swedes say intelligent trucks on our roads soon
Critics say that the transport of goods by road damages the environment, because of the high levels of pollution and high fuel consumption. Researchers in Sweden are testing a technology to reduce these effects. If the tests are favourable it could change the way lorries use our roads, and the way distribution systems work.
The Swedes are testing “intelligent vehicles”, which go along roads like a sort of train; forming convoys of evenly-spaced vehicles in a chain. There are experiments with cars underway using a similar technology.
The trucks are able to communicate between each other and automatically find their position on the road. The objective is that several trucks could line up behind each other just like skiers or cyclists do to reduce air friction. This could save as much as 10 percent of fuel costs.
“There will be space to get in between the trucks; we are considering gaps of between 15-25 meters. So you will be able to get in between and you will be able to pass if you are going fast enough. The system will sense the approaching car and slow down to make the gap a little bigger,” says head of research Tony Sander.
The computers control all the pedals, and the trucks can steer themselves. So what will the drivers do? Like pilots with autopilots, they will still supervise and maintain control of the system.
So would it not be simpler just to use trains? Experts answer that they have taken the advantages of trains and moved them out onto the roads.
“The train is very good for some types of transport, but it’s not very flexible. Very long trains take a long time to load and unload. Here trucks can join and leave the caravan while it is still moving along the motorway,” says Sandberg.
The vehicles, according to researchers, are entering the final stages of development and could be operational next year on Swedish highways.

Wearing 25 kilos of body protection, Christobal Huet starts his training as goalkeeper of the Fribourg ice hockey team in Switzerland. He gives an impression of explosive power speeding over the ice. But this is a very different kind of ice from that which Huet has skated on before — it never melts, because it is synthetic.
The experienced hockey player is impressed: “It feels like being on real ice. Anyway, for a goalkeeper, when you stop,accelerate, it’s the same, even sliding on your knees, it’s perfect. So it’s really like ice.”
The inventor of this synthetic ice, Bertrand Pittet, is from Fribourg and an ice hockey fan. An amateur goalkeeper himself, he bought a mini plastic ice rink for training but was not impressed by it. So he decided to make something better.
Bertrand Pittet explained his creation to euronews: “It’s a polymer, I won’t tell you exactly what it’s made of because that’s a manufacturing secret. But the big advantage is that it’s completely dry. It’s extremely hard and resists damage very well, which is the advantage. Also, it’s very fine and light.”
A DIY enthusiast, Bertrand Pittet has also made other inventions. He is currently working on a machine that can sharpen skates without the skater having to take them off.
He told up of his passion: “As long as I can remember, I always wanted to make the things I wanted to have. I never wanted to buy things which I could make myself. It all started with Lego, Meccano, the wood in my father’s carpentry workshop.”
Today he makes a living out of his inventions and has come a long way from those early efforts: “Often at the beginning, inventing something is a personal challenge. You think, I wonder if I could invent that? Then you step back a bit and ask yourself, but could there be a commercial use for this? Because if I need this, maybe other people would also find it useful. And then you have to evaluate the market potential of the idea.”
His synthetic ice has already been very successful. Orders have come in from Switzerland, France, Scandinavia and Canada. The Geneva Servette ice hockey club were the first to order the new ice and they say they have never regretted it.

A car really is driving through the Berlin traffic all by itself. The co-driver is only there to assuage the safety concerns of the German authorities. During several hours of driving round the city, the co-driver never once needed to touch the wheel. This is the latest driverless development of the Berlin Free University AutoNOMOS project.
Tinosh Ganjineh, the safety driver and project manager of the AutoNOMOS project said: “Our vehicle positions itself with a GPS receiver and it determines its position via a digital map. Information from the car’s sensors is gathered and processed on a central computer so that the vehicle can react to its surroundings. Other systems then control acceleration, braking and steering.”
Many of the technologies used in this autonomous vehicle are already incorporated into mass-production cars: the lane assistant, the adoptive distance control and the parking assistance. What is interesting for the future is the camera-based traffic light recognition and positioning improvement – because at the moment, position is based on a GPS receiver and that leads to problems in narrow streets and tunnels.
Professor Dr Raul Rojas, the project director, and head of the FU Berlin group Artificial Intelligence said: “Our vision for the future is that autonomous driving will make car sharing much easier. Because, you don’t have to go and pick up the car, then drive and then deliver the car in a parking lot. The car comes to you, you drive the car and then you release the car for other customers.”
All that remains is the small matter of getting the price down. This one cost 400,000 euros to build. But in ten years’ time we could start seeing these cars around and who knows? In the future, a driverless car could be completely normal.

Pressure is piling on Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi to quit.
A rally in Rome, called by the country’s main opposition, the Democratic Party, drew thousands from around the country.
Much of the press has turned on the prime minister and even pro-government newspapers admitted his situation was looking desperate after the humiliation of the G20 summit.
The Democratic Party leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, could not have made it clearer. “Berlusconi should go home,” he said, prompting a roar of approval from the crowd.
“Either he goes alone or we send him home, in Parliament or through elections. But he has to go home”.
The fact that the International Monetary Fund will now be monitoring the implementation of Italy’s reform pledges is the final embarrasment for many.
“We are not credible. I’m ashamed of how other European countries see us,” said one man. “It is pitiful. This man (Berlusconi), this marionette, must go away”.
Despite the protest, Berlusconi again declared he has no intention of standing down, saying it is his duty to stay on.
But he faces yet another confidence vote in Parliament on Tuesday and, with more coalition partners jumping ship, analysts estimate he is currently 15 votes short of winning it.

Canadian National spokesman Patrick Waldron said crews were responding to the scene.
The fire was still burning by late morning, according to Bartlett Police Sgt. Geoffrey Pretkelis, who was at the scene. Three of 22 derailed cars caught fire. No injuries were reported..
As a result of the derailment, Chicago's commuter rail service, Metra, shut down most service on the Milwaukee West route, which runs from Elgin to downtown Chicago and serves about 11,400 passengers every weekday, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.
Full service is not expected to be restored until at least Friday, said Miller.
Pretkelis said one of the cars that caught fire was empty, one contained scrap metal, and one contained fiberboard.

Do you know what a murmuration is, and have you ever witnessed such a dazzling display of avian behavior? The accompanying video shows an enormous flock of European starlings -- a murmuration -- swirling through the sky in a magnificent ballet that almost seems choreographed. The short-lived seasonal phenomenon, signaling the onset of winter, was captured by Sophie Windsor Clive and Liberty Smith on a canoe trip atop Ireland's River Shannon.
As for murmurations, they typically occur in late autumn, as the starlings return to roosts after long-distance foraging expeditions. The dusk flights can involve tens of thousands of birds and what's mystifying is how they can swirl about so swiftly and in such unison without colliding into one another. (Possessing a reaction time of under 100 milliseconds helps.)

Flock of Starlings' Dazzling Aerial Ballet
The birds fly in flocks and try to fly exactly like the one next to them and the result is remarkable.
Do you know what a murmuration is, and have you ever witnessed such a dazzling display of avian behavior? The accompanying video shows an enormous flock of European starlings -- a murmuration -- swirling through the sky in a magnificent ballet that almost seems choreographed. The short-lived seasonal phenomenon, signaling the onset of winter, was captured by Sophie Windsor Clive and Liberty Smith on a canoe trip atop Ireland's River Shannon.
As for murmurations, they typically occur in late autumn, as the starlings return to roosts after long-distance foraging expeditions. The dusk flights can involve tens of thousands of birds and what's mystifying is how they can swirl about so swiftly and in such unison without colliding into one another. (Possessing a reaction time of under 100 milliseconds helps.)

Arrests at new Occupy Wall Street protest 06/11/2011
At least 20 people have been arrested after scuffles broke out during an Occupy Wall Street protest in New York.
Hundreds of people marched as part of a demonstration against what they see as greed among banks and corporations.
Occupy Wall Street has inspired similar demonstrations right around the world.
Protester David Yale said: “This march is about the banks and what they’ve done to the American economy. We want them to be held accountable. We want them to pay for the damage they did. Fraud should be punished by jail terms.”
Sandra Eagle, a protester from Connecticut, said: “These corporations could have been doing good with their money, but instead their greed in my mind was that they just were willing to ravage country’s resources and ravage their own country in the name of some personal profit.”
It is reported the police insisted that footpaths be kept clear during the protest, and moved in to enforce the order.
Clasina Dreisbach, a protester from Delaware, said:
“Everyone was peaceful. It was a peaceful protest. And the police were terrible, they were like the Gestapo.”
Witnesses say police started to arrest people as the protest march moved towards an area surrounded by government buildings.
