depends on the processor and the OC level.

hmm it depends on your standard cooler and processor , old P4 and C2D coolers are fine for some 300~400MHz or better Ocing , but those new thin coolers cant handle that. dont know much abt core i processors though![]()

Oh good My sis' pc is C2D![]()

He didnt burn off the processor. his problem was a defective mobo. he wasnt OCing that lappy either.is that how Madura burned his Processor (do remember a talk concerning that in IRC)![]()
guess there will be chatter in the IRC pretty soon about your previous CPUOh good My sis' pc is C2D![]()

awesome

it's not nice to OC your processor on the standard cooler right? is it absolutely risky or is there a limit?

I'm not OC'ing anything,OC one of those SQL servers and see what happens.so why not OC servers? I've access to many.
Overclocking maximum limit is 23%+/-2 of FSB is recommended.
which decides the final clock speed outcome with multiplier on your CPU
beyond that it's bit risky. or you may need to use water cooling or something like that to keep the processor cool. as examples
think if you have a 3.2GHz of clock speed on your processor(if multiplier value is 16) and which also consists 4 cores so the overall speed is 4*3.2= 12.6GHz and think if the FSB speed is 200MHz then you can increase it upto 200+200*23/100 so you get 246MHz
which means one core can generate 246MHz of FSB (front side bus speed)
so one core generates overall 16*246 = 3936MHz so all 4 cores can generate 15744MHz. AND keep this in your mind
it's actually not correct to sum the clock speeds of all 4 cores cause each core works individually though it's possible to share the load if the application supported Mulitcores as an example most of modern games are multicore optimized so in that case each core avouches for a specific task. so that's how it works.
