The best preseason games for 2012-13

The best preseason games for 2012-13

    193327hp2.jpg

As Euro 2012 drew to a thrilling conclusion with Spain securing glory in its third successive major international tournament, many fans mourned a brief break in high-quality European soccer. The new Premier League campaign does not get under way until the middle of August and all of a sudden competitive action feels a long way away.

However, players may now be on a well-earned holiday after the Euros, but their clubs have started preparations for the new term. The transfer window has already opened and preseason fixtures have been announced – with some getting under way in less than two weeks' time.

Here, Goal.com looks at five of the best clashes to watch out for over the remainder of the summer before the leagues across Europe roll back into action.

    LIVERPOOL V ROMA

    184121hp2.jpg

WHEN & WHERE: July 25, Fenway Park, Boston.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: Two giants of the European game clash in Boston – but these are both sides who are very much in transition having sacked managers after underwhelming campaigns. Brendan Rodgers and Zdenek Zeman have been brought in this summer, replacing Kenny Dalglish and Luis Enrique respectively. This clash will present an intriguing look at how each team is shaping up ahead of their kickoffs in the Premier League and Serie A.

PLAYER TO LOOK OUT FOR: Steven Gerrard has had huge injury problems over the last 18 months, which has undoubtedly played a part in Liverpool’s decline in fortunes. The talismanic skipper had a strong Euro 2012 campaign for England though, and will now be desperate to have a successful summer so he is in perfect shape for the new season.

    ARSENAL V MANCHESTER CITY

    159058hp2.jpg

WHEN & WHERE: July 27, Bird's Nest Stadium, Beijing.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: Two Premier League rivals clash in what will be an interesting early test of Arsenal’s title credentials against the defending champions in the Olympic Stadium. Are the Gunners building a squad to challenge Roberto Mancini’s men or are they destined for another season off the pace?

PLAYER TO LOOK OUT FOR: Olivier Giroud is Arsene Wenger’s marquee signing and the friendlies will be a vital part of his bedding in process at the club. Will he play alongside Robin van Persie, if the Dutchman is still at the club, and how will he adapt to playing alongside his new teammates against tough opposition in Kompany and Co.

    CHELSEA V AC MILAN

    190119hp2.jpg

WHEN & WHERE: July 28, Sun Life Stadium, Miami.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: The Champions League winner meets the seven-time European champion in a mouth-watering preseason clash. American fans will hope the match can live up to its billing, with a number of stars such as Fernando Torres and Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to be on show.

PLAYER TO LOOK OUT FOR: Chelsea trumped the continent’s biggest clubs to sign Eden Hazard this summer and all eyes will be on the Belgian playmaker as he settles into life at his new club. The confident ex-Lille man will be desperate to make a fast start to prove he is worth all the attention he received during a drawn-out transfer saga in which he also flirted with City and United.

    BARCELONA V MANCHESTER UNITED

    132852hp2.jpg

WHEN & WHERE: August 8, Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: Barcelona and Manchester United – two of the world’s biggest clubs - previously clashed in the Champions League final in 2009 and 2011, with the stylish Catalans coming out on top on both occasions. They also met in pre-season last year, where United gained a small element of revenge for those final defeats by winning 2-1 in the U.S.

PLAYER TO LOOK OUT FOR: United has had creative problems in midfield over recent seasons, with many fans pointing to their lack of class in the middle of the pitch as being crucial to its failure to beat City to last season’s title. Shinji Kagawa has been signed from Borussia Dortmund for 17 million pounds and fans of the Red Devils will be desperate to get their first glimpse of him in preseason. How will he get on against the class of Barca?

    VALENCIA V TOTTENHAM

    195695hp2.jpg

WHEN & WHERE: August 9, Mestalla Stadium, Valencia.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: It's all change at both clubs this summer. Andre Villas-Boas has replaced Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane, and Mauricio Pellegrino is the new head coach at Valencia, replacing Unai Emery. This away trip will serve as a tough test for Villas-Boas' new charges, while the Spaniards will be keen to fare better than they did against Chelsea - when they were managed by the Portuguese boss - in last season's Champions League group stages.

PLAYER TO LOOK OUT FOR: Roberto Soldado may have been snubbed by champions Spain for their Euro 2012 squad but he remains a consistent goalscorer and attacking threat in La Liga. The 27-year-old is now reaching his peak years and will be eager to make a good impression against English opposition and ensure he can hit the ground running next season.

Robin the red: Ferguson lines up bid for Van Persie but first he must fight off City

Manchester United are preparing to gazump neighbours City and sign unsettled Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to land the Holland star, who confirmed he will not be signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, as Sportsmail revealed on May 18.

In a damning statement, Van Persie questioned Arsenal’s ambition, saying he wants to win trophies but that he and the club ‘disagree on the way Arsenal should move forward’.

    article-0-130BB0B7000005DC-654_468x286.jpg

Making a point: Robin van Persie announced his decision not to sign a new Arsenal deal on his website

Ferguson wants the Barclays Premier League title back from Manchester City and does not intend to lose out on a player who scored 30 League goals last season.

Van Persie’s shock declaration was met with fury by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who face yet another summer of losing their star.

The striker’s statement on his own website read: ‘As announced earlier this year, I had a meeting with the Boss and Mr Gazidis after the season. This was a meeting about the club’s future strategy and their policy. Financial terms or a contract have not been discussed, since that is not my priority at all.

    article-0-0086EC5000000514-636_468x296.jpg

Rebuilding: Sir Alex Ferguson will use his famed powers of persuasion to attempt to lure Van Persie to Old Trafford after a trophyless season, but will face stern competition from City counterpart Roberto Mancini (below), pictured on holdiday in Sardinia

    article-0-13BE66D1000005DC-547_468x312.jpg

‘I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days. Out of my huge respect for Mr Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we, in many aspects, disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.

    Sold! Arsenal's talent drain

2011: Fabregas to Barca, £35m Nasri to Man City, £24m
2009: Adebayor to Man City, £25m K Toure to Man City, £16m
    2007: Henry to Barca, £16.6m
    2006: Ashley Cole to Chelsea
    2005: Vieira to Juventus, £13.7m
    2000: Overmars to Barca, £25m

'I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.

‘I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens. I have grown up and became a man during my time with Arsenal FC. I am very proud of being part of this fantastic club for the last eight years. As soon as Mr Gazidis is back from his two-week holiday in America further meetings will follow and I will update you if and when there are more developments.’

Champions City will formalise their interest soon with manager Roberto Mancini desperate to land Van Persie, 28. City are prepared to offer a whopping £225,000-per-week, which is beyond United’s pay structure. But Ferguson will urge his club to push their financial boundaries and beat City.

Gunners officials were stunned by their captain’s statement. No-one at the club had been told it was coming. Wenger and Gazidis both contacted the player’s agent, Kees Vos, to read the riot act over what they perceive to be a blatant attempt to force a move. They are convinced Van Persie has a move lined up and view the player’s statement as an attempt to speed up the process.

Robin has one year to run on his contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the club. We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season.’

Nevertheless, Arsenal insiders last night said the club are resigned to selling him this summer. The prospect of £20million is too good to turn down

Nani sets deadline on future as Portuguese winger fears Man United exit is ahead

Worried Manchester United winger Nani has a laid down a two-week deadline in which to sort out his uncertain future at Old Trafford.

The Portugal international is believed to be desperate to stay but his latest breakdown in contract talks have forced him to ponder his next move.

The 25-year-old has been attempting to negotiate a new deal at the Barclays Premier League club since last season, according to The Sun, and is said to be worried that Sir Alex Ferguson is set to sell him.

Jordi Alba delighted to be 'coming home' to Barcelona

    195887hp2.jpg

Euro 2012 winner Jordi Alba has expressed his delight at rejoining Barcelona, after the La Liga runner-up completed a deal to bring the youth product back from Valencia for 14 million euros.

After an impressive domestic season with Los Che, the 23-year-old left back played a key role in Spain's European Championship triumph, and he admitted that he is now focusing on his move to Camp Nou.

"I'm coming home, with my family and my people, that's why I'm so content," Alba told the club's official website. "It's been an incredible month for me and now I have to take advantage of the opportunity that Barcelona have given me.

"I'm excited that I'll be playing for the best team in the world, with the best players and the best fans. It's a big challenge for me but I'll try to do my best. I was only 15 when I left Barcelona to do my own thing. Luckily, after some years, they have signed me again. The club has given me a chance and I'm very pleased."

The Catalan assured fans he would have no problems bedding into the club again, and confirmed he had already spoken with incoming coach Tito Vilanova.

"Besides the national team players, I already know a lot of guys in the youth system, the teammates I played with when I was here. I'm sure I'll have a fast transition. Vilanova and I talked after the Euro final and he congratulated me. I'm very eager to start playing under him."

Alba played in every game of La Furia Roja's successful defense of their European crown, and scored the second goal of the 4-0 win over Italy in the final in Kiev.

    Fergie's going Brazilian
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to make Brazil's next big thing - Sao Paulo starlet Lucas Moura - his big summer signing. Fergie has sent a delegation headed by chief scout Jim Lawlor to thrash out a deal for the 19-year-old, who is also wanted by Chelsea and Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Ferguson is pleading with United's owners, the Glazer family, to spend up to £30million on the youngster who tops his hit-list as he aims to improve his side after a trophyless season. United have been on the Moura's trail for months and invited his father to Old Trafford for talks - as Mirror Sport revealed in April. Now, they have gone to Brazil in a bid to seal the massive transfer. Moura, who has already capped by his country, is valued at £35m by Sao Paolo, but United are looking at ways of bringing down the price while also winning over the player and his loved ones. The youngster's contract is part-owned by his family. If they back a move to Old Trafford, it could give Ferguson's hopes of pulling off the coup a real boost. :)

    Reds director steps down
Maurice Watkins CBE is stepping down from the board of Manchester United Football Club Ltd after 28 years' service. From 1991-2004, he was also a director of Manchester United PLC, a company quoted on the London Stock Exchange.
    985D399BB13B4A22B3E4FAF2783D4FC9.ashx

Mr Watkins joined the board in 1984, at the invitation of the then chairman, Martin Edwards. In 1986, he was centrally involved, alongside Martin Edwards, Bobby Charlton and Michael Edelson, in the appointment of Alex Ferguson to succeed Ron Atkinson. He has played a significant role in the development of Manchester United and the game of football both domestically and internationally during that time.

Announcing Maurice's departure, Chief Executive, David Gill said:

"Maurice has been a great servant of and adviser to Manchester United and I'd like to place on record my thanks and that of the other board members for the time and effort he has devoted to that task. He has been a source of calm, measured advice and someone who always has the genuine interests of the Club at heart. Although Maurice is leaving the board, in his role as Joint Senior Partner of Brabners Chaffe Street, he will continue to act as one of the Club’s advisers going forward. ”

    Maurice Watkins said:

"It has been a privilege to serve on the board of that great institution which is Manchester United Football Club, for nearly thirty years and to work with so many committed individuals during that time. I shall continue to support the Club in the future both on and off the pitch wherever I am able to do so."

also reveal that summer signings Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa will wear no.25 and no.26 respectively.

The Reds' remaining squad numbers for the 2012/13 season are yet to be confirmed.
