The Montreal Impact sign Italian defender Alessandro Nesta
The Montreal Impact have announced the signing of veteran Italian defender Alessandro Nesta on a free transfer. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"I'm very happy to be here," said Alessandro Nesta. "Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in MLS. Upon visiting my friend Marco (Di Vaio) to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club. I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be."
Nesta, 36, joins the Impact after 417 matches in Serie A, 101 in the Champions League and 17 in the Europa League with both AC Milan and Lazio. He's also been selected for UEFA's Team of the Year on four different occasions (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007).
"It's exciting not only for the team, but also for the club to have a player of his pedigree, a world champion in 2006 and one of the top defenders in the world," said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. "Alessandro will bring a lot of leadership qualities through his different experiences, and will be a great mentor to our young players. To have him around the team and on the field will help the club as a whole."
The former AC Milan defender also has an impressive 78 caps for the Italian national team and won the 2006 World Cup with the team.
"It's an incredible opportunity for our club to add a defender of his talent," said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch. "We are very anxious to get him into our lineup because he will make us better on every level."
The Impact traded allocation money to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for first priority in the MLS allocation order. Nesta's contract with Montreal won't take up a designated player slot.

The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee has decided to suspend and fine Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham for one game and an undisclosed amount for his behavior in his team's 4-3 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.
Beckham's suspension will take place when the Galaxy travel to Chicago to take on the Fire on July 7th. Per the League's press release on the matter, Beckham's behavior was dubbed, "unacceptable and detrimental to the League’s public image."
The Committee also handed out fines to Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena and Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch for publicly criticizing league officials.

Porto forward Hulk and AC Milan center back Thiago Silva account for two of three berths reserved for 'over-age' players, with the other slot having been filled by Real Madrid fullback Marcelo.
Santos striker Neymar, meanwhile, has already firmly established himself in his country's senior squad and he will be joined in the Olympic panel by another experienced youngster in the form of Alexandre Pato, who only recently returned to full fitness after an injury-plagued season at Milan.
There is also room in the 18-strong traveling party for a plethora of other full internationals, including Brazil-based starlets Oscar, Lucas, Ganso and Leandro Damiao.

Reading signs Pogrebnyak on free transfer
Reading has signed Russia international Pavel Pogrebnyak after the striker was granted a work permit.
The 28-year-old has joined the club on a free transfer following his release from Bundesliga side Stuttgart, having agreed a four-year contract.
"We were always hopeful that a permit would be secured but it's still great to get the deal done," director of football Nick Hammond said in a statement. "It'll be nice get him in and working with the lads - he's a great individual, and will fit really well into group."
The Russian will join up with the rest of the squad at a later date as he takes a break following Euro 2012 and will link up with fellow new signings Gareth McCleary and Danny Guthrie.
"We're delighted. It's been a long process to get Pavel to the club and now he's officially a Reading player and everyone is looking forward to working with him," manager Brian McDermott added. "Having met Pavel, he is a top guy, his work ethic is excellent and I'm sure he will be very important to our group in the coming years."
Pogrebnyak previously impressed while on loan at Fulham for the second half of last season, scoring six goals in 12 Premier League appearances.

However, Carvajal is now set to move to the BayArena for a fee of around 5 million euros with the deal expected to be finalized on Monday. It is not yet known, though, whether Madrid will insert a buy-back clause into the transfer.
Carvajal has long been tipped for great things, with Blancos legend Michel Salgado recently claiming that the youngster could make the right-back berth his own in the coming seasons.

It was only two weeks ago that Nesta told Goal.com that he hadn’t received any offers from MLS clubs. Truth be told, no one in MLS really wants to use up one of its three designated player spots on a centre back.
The Impact never wanted to either. The priority was getting a midfielder and a month ago Montreal made offers for Clarence Seedorf and Michael Ballack. But those attempts were unsuccessful and things have changed in the last few weeks.
Further injuries to Nelson Rivas and Matteo Ferrari, two heavy consecutive 3-0 defeats and the team having the worst defensive record in the league, meant that the club now wanted a centre back. With Nesta visiting potential suitors Toronto FC when they we’re at Saputo Stadium in Montreal to play the Impact, all Joey Saputo needed to do was, literally, walk over and give him a contract. And that’s exactly what he did.
The deal may have seemed rushed and almost rash, but it’s not as if it needed all that much thought. After all, Nesta is no ordinary player. To put things in perspective, Matteo Ferrari, who’s easily been the Impact’s best center back this season, was essentially an everyday defender in Serie A; Nesta, on the other hand, is one of the best central defenders the game has ever had.
At the age of 36, the Rome native may be past his best, but he still has plenty of quality. Just a few months ago, he helped AC Milan keep a clean sheet at the San Siro against Lionel Messi and Barcelona, what many consider to be the best team of all time.
He has had his injury problems, though. He was kept out of the 2008-2009 season due to back problems, but he’s played fairly regularly over the last three years. With a one-and-a-half year contract, he should be able to make a very strong contribution to the Impact.

Shevchenko: AC Milan is still a competitive club
Former Ukraine international Andriy Shevchenko is confident that AC Milan has what it takes to fight for silverware in the 2012-13 campaign.

Spanish full-back Alba had agreed the move in principle a week prior to La Roja's victory in the final of Euro 2012 but passed a medical, completed the necessary paperwork and was presented to the media on Thursday.
The 23-year-old is Barca's first signing of the summer as they build towards next season under new coach Tito Vilanova, who has replaced Pep Guardiola.
Alba, whose contract with Valencia was due to expire in June 2013 and had a €90 million buy-out clause, is no stranger to Barcelona, having spent seven years at their La Masia youth academy from 1998 to 2005.

Manchester United continue their pursuit of Tottenham target Moutinho
Manchester United are continuing to monitor Porto midfielder and Tottenham target Joao Moutinho.
The Red Devils are understood to have opened talks with the Portuguese club over a deal for the attacking midfielder, who is rated in the £25million mark.
After bringing Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa to Old Trafford in the close season, Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV earlier this week that he hopes to add two more faces - with Moutinho widely rumoured to be a top target.

Goal-line technology approved
Football's world governing body FIFA has agreed to allow the introduction of goal-line technology after it was approved by the International FA Board.
Two systems, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, have been approved by the IFAB after passing a series of scientific tests set by FIFA.
Technology could be introduced into the Premier League as soon as the new year following the decision at a meeting in Zurich.
FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said they intended to bring goal-line technology in for the Club World Cup in Japan in December, next year's Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Valcke said FIFA would pay for the systems - around $250,000 US per stadium - and leave them in place in the stadiums.
"We want to make sure that the systems at the World Cup work at 150 percent, not 90 percent," Valcke said.FA general secretary Alex Horne told a news conference in Zurich it was "a hugely important day" for football.
He said: "We believe that it is a great day for football. From an English perspective today is a hugely important day, it is a cause we have had on our agenda for a number of years.
"This is about having the right technology helping the referee in a relatively rare occurrence - the scoring of a goal."Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan hailed the decision, saying: "Over the past few years there have been a number of occasions where mistakes have been made in football.
"The referee will still make the final decision but the view of the board is that anything that can help the referee has to be good."I think this is an historic day for football and I'm delighted to be part of that decision made today."

Patrick Nelson, chief executive of the Irish FA, added: "The three decisions made today will be long-lasting and will resonate throughout the world.
"The IFAB has been around since 1886 and has been the guardians of the laws of the game for all that time, and has developed the game slowly and carefully and conservatively."But this is a momentous day, the beginning of something new in football."
Jonathan Ford, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, also backed the decision, which was made unanimously.Ford said: "The Football Association of Wales is extremely proud to be a member of this board and has devoted a great deal of time and deliberation and effort to this."Fundamental and momentous decisions were made here today and we are very proud to be involved with that."
The IFAB - made up of FIFA and the four home nations - ruled out any video replays of goal-line decisions being shown on TV or on big screens to the crowd at stadiums, as happens with the Hawk-Eye system in tennis.
Ford stressed the referee had the final say on whether to award a goal and pointed out he may decide to rule it out for other reasons even if the technology shows the ball has crossed the line."If a giant screen comes up 'goal' but it is offside then could have a major issue with crowd management," said Ford.Regan added: "This is not designed to be put on giant screens, this is about technology designed to help the referee."
And the Premier League wasted no time in hailing the decision, releasing a statement straight after the announcement saying that the technology will be introduced in to England's top division as quickly as possible."The Premier League has been a long term advocate of goal-line technology," the statement read.
"We welcome today's decision by IFAB and will engage in discussions with both Hawkeye and GoalRef in the near future with a view to introducing goal-line technology as soon as is practically possible."
Officials
Approval was also given on the five officials method of refereeing matches.The referee and two linesmen will be aided by two further officials posted behind each team's goal-line to keep an eye on action in and around the critical penalty box area should tournament organisers want it.
FIFA has been trialling the 'Additional Assitant Referee' system since 2008 and it was in use during the recently-finished Euro 2012 as well as the UEFA Champions League.
