Falcao tight-lipped on Atletico Madrid future

    185011hp2.jpg

Radamel Falcao is remaining tight-lipped on his future amid reports that he could be on his way out of Atletico Madrid.

The Colombia international only arrived at the Vicente Calderon last summer and enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in Spanish capital, firing Los Rojiblancos to Europa League glory and a fifth-placed finish in La Liga.

However, it has been reported that Atletico is now considering cashing in on its much-coveted striker, who was given extra time off over the summer to recharge his batteries.

"I cannot talk about anything," Falcao is quoted as saying by AS after touching down in Madrid on Sunday following a vacation. "[I am] looking forward to returning [to Atletico]."

The 26-year-old forward, who joined Atleti from Porto, has been linked with both Manchester City and Barcelona in recent weeks.

However, the Spanish capital club have publicly stated that they have no intention of parting company with Falcao, who netted 24 times in 34 appearances in La Liga last season.

Villas-Boas lucky to get Tottenham job, says Lampard

    169832hp2.jpg

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard says former Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas is lucky to have landed the Tottenham job.

The 34-year-old manager had been out of work since his sacking by the west London club in March but was appointed as Harry Redknapp's successor on a three-year deal on Tuesday.

And Lampard, who clashed with the Portuguese during his time at Stamford Bridge, says Villas-Boas has a tough act to follow in north London.

“AVB has inherited an exceptional squad of players," he told The Sun. “A squad that’s good enough to bring Champions League football and contend for the Premier League title. A team that’s played some terrific, thrilling attacking football and scored goals for fun.

“So AVB is a lucky man taking over at Spurs because the players are so very good. Admittedly that can be a double-edged sword, though. Because Harry Redknapp will be an extremely tough act to follow. Harry lifted Spurs to an amazing level.

“The way he turned that club around was remarkable. They were at absolute rock bottom when Harry came in. Then all of a sudden they’re playing in the Champions League and competing at the very top. So he did an incredible job there and he definitely didn’t deserve to lose his job.

“That’s why I was really surprised when Harry left. He did wonders at Tottenham and I thought him leaving was a terrible shame.”

The 33-year-old also expressed his belief that Villas-Boas will have improved as a manager by learning from his disastrous spell at Chelsea.

“AVB didn’t do well at Chelsea but it was not for the want of anyone trying," he continued. “He wanted to succeed, he wanted to do it his way. But it just didn’t work. Not because of any battle between me and him, there was a lot more to it than that.

“He had his plans for the team and that meant me not playing as much as before. That was just one part of it, the problems were far bigger and broader than that. But as a player you learn off every manager whether they are good, bad or indifferent. I definitely learned in different ways from Andre. It was an interesting time.

The England international went on to reveal that he is looking forward to coming up against his former boss when the two London sides meet in the Premier League.

“Yes, AVB now being at Spurs will give those derby games even more of an edge," he said. “They are pretty edgy anyway but this will add even more. When I see him I’ll shake his hand and wish him all the best. But then I will try my best to beat him.”

Galliani: AC Milan's squad is complete

    196215hp2.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has reiterated that the transfer window is closed as far as the club is concerned, claiming that Massimiliano Allegri's squad is "complete," but did hint at a potential signing later in the summer.

The Rossoneri have lost a number of legendary figures since the end of last season, including Alessandro Nesta, Filippo Inzaghi and Gennaro Gattuso, and have made just one high-profile signing: Italy international Riccardo Montolivo on a free transfer from Fiorentina.

However, having managed to hold onto Thiago Silva despite a 46 million euro bid from Paris Saint-Germain, Galliani feels that Diavolo are well equipped to reclaim the Serie A title they handed over to Juventus in May.

Indeed, when asked by Sky Sport Italia if Milan might yet make a late move in the transfer market, as they did for Antonio Nocerino last summer, the Rossoneri chief replied: "At the moment, I'm saying no because the team is complete.

"But I'm keeping myself updated and I will continue to inform myself of what's going on elsewhere."

As well as Montolivo, Milan have also completed deals for Bakaye Traore, Gabriel, Francesco Acerbi, Kevin Constant and Edoardo Pazzagli.

Lampard rubbishes LA Galaxy transfer rumors

    162573hp2.jpg

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has dismissed rumors that have tipped him with a move to LA Galaxy.

Lampard was seen sitting with agent Steve Kutner and David Beckham at an LA Galaxy match last week, but the 34-year-old has stated that his visit to Los Angeles was only a holiday.

Despite facing the final year of his 130,000 pounds-a-week contract with Chelsea, Lampard has reaffirmed his allegiances to the club that he joined from West Ham in 2001.

"There's nothing in that [LA Galaxy links] at all," Lampard told the Sun. "I'm here in Los Angeles on holiday with Christine [Bleakley]. We got engaged here last year and we love it over here.

"Steve's [Kutner, his agent] over here a lot on music and football business. He organized a box so we could go to see the Galaxy game. Becks was suspended for the match, so he came and sat with us and we had a good laugh, that’s all."

Lampard is all set to start preseason training with Chelsea next week, despite picking up a thigh strain at the end of May.

"Now I'm really looking forward to getting back to Chelsea. I'm feeling fit and fresh and I'm raring to go. My thigh strain is completely healed now and maybe missing the Euros was a blessing in disguise for me.

"I had a full summer off and I'm ready to go back to start the hard work for the new season. We've more to look forward to with the Super Cup and World Club Championships."

:cool:Valencia 'thoroughly deserves' famous Manchester United No.7 shirt, says Gary Neville

    184348hp2.jpg

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes that Antonio Valencia can live up to the iconic No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.

Club legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have worn the number in the past.

Following Michael Owen’s departure from the club in June, Valencia asked Sir Alex Ferguson if he could take up the mantle – and Neville feels that the winger can be a worthy bearer of the historic number.

"He’s been a fantastic signing for United and thoroughly deserves that No.7 shirt," the former defender told the club’s official website.

"Having played with him for a year or two, I can tell you he’s a brilliant footballer, especially to play behind as a right back. He does the right things at the right time, he works back to help out when you don’t have the ball, he delivers good crosses and he can beat a man.”

Valencia arrived at Old Trafford from Wigan for a fee of around 16 million pounds in 2009 and has since gone on to cement himself a place in the first-team before being named the players' and fans' player of the season in 2011-12.

And Neville is of the opinion that the Ecuador international can continue to improve his game with the extra pressure that the shirt number can bring.

"He’s a real handful to play against and I was really pleased to see him score a few more goals last season. That’s probably the only area of the game in which you’d like to see an improvement," the England coach and TV pundit argued.

"He has a wonderful shot and he stays calm under pressure. I’d love to see him chip in with 10 or 15 goals this season - he’s more than capable of doing that."

Valencia’s vacated No.25 shirt has been given to new signing Nick Powell, recruited from Crewe Alexandra in the close-season.

"We were presented with a very concrete offer from Chelsea for Andre of beyond the €20million mark," Holzhauser is quoted by German news agency SID."The sum was pushed back and forth between the two clubs. We ultimately chose Andre."Andre is very valuable for us. He has also made it clear he would like to stay with us."

    Deschamps takes France job

    Deschamps takes France job

    didierdeschamps20111101_576x324.jpg

Former Juventus and Marseille boss Didier Deschamps has been appointed the new manager of France following a series of meetings in Paris.

Deschamps, who captained France to their 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 triumphs, succeeds his former Les Bleus team-mate Laurent Blanc, who stepped down as manager following Euro 2012.

The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed the appointment in a brief statement and said Deschamps would be unveiled on Monday."Noel Le Graet, FFF president, and Didier Deschamps have finished their talks and have reached an agreement for the appointment of Mr Deschamps as coach of the France team," the FFF statement read.

"Noel Le Graet and Didier Deschamps will give a joint press conference on July 9 at 1730 (local time) at the headquarters of the French Football Federation."Deschamps was quickly installed as favourite to succeed Blanc after he left his post at Marseille by mutual consent last week.

The 43-year-old guided OM to one Ligue 1 title and a record three successive League Cups in as many years on the south coast of France.Deschamps first game in charge will be against South American champions Uruguay in Le Havre on August 15.

He could be without a number of his star names before then, however, as the FFF continue to sift through the fall-out of a Euro 2012 campaign that was undermined by off-field problems.

Last week the governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against four members of the squad - Samir Nasri, Hatem Ben Arfa, Jeremy Menez and Yann M'Vila, who are set to be called in front of a disciplinary committee.

Manchester City midfielder Nasri fell foul of the FFF following his heated argument with a journalist in the wake of Les Bleus' last-eight loss to Spain, while Newcastle forward Ben Arfa was allegedly embroiled in a dressing-room altercation following the 2-0 defeat to Sweden in France's final Group D outing.Paris St Germain midfielder Menez is to be investigated after allegedly gesturing at goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, while Rennes midfielder M'Vila upset the FFF when he ignored Blanc following his substitution against Spain.

The unsavoury claims have brought back memories of France's disastrous 2010 World Cup, when Les Bleus crashed out at the group stage after the players refused to train following the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka. On that occasion, Anelka, Patrice Evra, Franck Ribery and Jeremy Toulalan were hit with bans of varying lengths by the FFF.

France begin their qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup with an away match against Finland on September 9 before they host Belarus four days later. Also in Group I are defending champions Spain and Georgia.

    Ganso to leave Santos

    Ganso to leave Santos

    gansoceleb20120524_576x324.jpg

Brazil starlet Paulo Henrique Ganso has played his last game for Santos, according to the player's representative Delcir Sonda.

Ganso has been in dispute with the Sao Paulo club over a new contract and the 22-year-old has rejected their latest improved offer. The attacking midfielder is tipped to make a big-money move to Europe, with Manchester United and AC Milan both linked, but Sonda, whose DIS agency currently owns 55% of the player's economic rights, says Ganso will remain in Brazil.

A move to Internacional is the most likely option as Ganso does not want to risk losing his place in the national team ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals in his homeland."This is definitive, Ganso won't play for Santos anymore. And yes, he may join Internacional," Sonda told Radio Estadao ESPN. "I am negotiating with Santos to buy his full rights."

"Ganso is upset with the club. They put together a project for Neymar but forgot about Ganso. He wants to leave but stay in Brazil for at least another year."Santos' manager Muricy Ramalho told Lancenet: "You'll never want to lose Ganso, but he has to decide where he wants to play.

"We want him to have a good performance in the Olympics and then return to us".Despite Ganso's seeming desire to remain in Brazil, the news of the highly-rated midfielder's proposed sale will undoubtedly put a number of Europe's biggest clubs on alert.

Milan yet to make Carroll move

Milan yet to make Carroll move

    andycarrollceleb20120505_576x324.jpg

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claims reports linking Andy Carroll with AC Milan are wide of the mark, with the Italian outfit having made no contact. It has been claimed that the Serie A giants are keen to strike a loan deal for the England international after being impressed by his displays at Euro 2012.

Carroll has not enjoyed the best of times at Anfield since completing a £35million move from Newcastle United, but his performances towards the end of last season suggest he is close to recapturing his best form.Rodgers considers the 23-year-old to be an important part of his plans heading forward and appreciates that transfer gossip will follow good players around.

He told Sky Sports News HD: "He's a good player, Andy. He will always be linked whether he was here or not.

    Good player

I have spoken to Andy on his holidays and he knows exactly where he stands. He's a very good young player and he will be linked with clubs like that because he's such a good player."Asked if Milan had made an approach, Rodgers added: "I haven't heard anything from them at all."

Rodgers has also hinted that he is prepared to offer a clean slate to Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani, two players that have been sent out on loan in recent seasons after struggling to settle at Anfield.

Rodgers said: "Both players are back. I had a good chat with Alberto the other day. He's a good guy and it obviously hasn't quite worked out for him as of yet. But he's a player that has got the qualities, the technical ability, to play."What's going to be important for every player is that they have the steel and the mindset to play. That's something I will find out about all of the players during pre-season."

    Mancini set for new contract

    Mancini set for new contract

    robertomancinitrophyceleb20120513_576x324.jpg

Roberto Mancini could put pen to paper on a new contract at Manchester City as early as this week, according to ESPN sources, despite rumours linking him with the Russia national side.

Recent speculation has claimed that Mancini is to be named on a shortlist by the Russian Football Union on Tuesay as the nation seeks a replacement for Dick Advocaat, who stepped down after Euro 2012.However, Mancini, who guided City to the Premier League title last season, is on the verge of signing a new three-year contract, with his current terms set to expire next summer.

"Discussions are on-going. It's a big deal, so they are always complex and take time," a source told ESPN."City are confident it will be concluded this week, but because of all the clauses and legalities it could run into next week. But, by all accounts, the new contract is pretty close to being agreed."

It is understood Mancini's new deal could be worth around £30 million including bonuses, depending on successes, which would make him the highest paid manager in England's top flight.

    Bale could still leave Spurs

    Bale could still leave Spurs

    garethbaletottenhamceleb20111227_576x324.jpg

ESPN understands that Gareth Bale could still be allowed to leave Tottenham this summer if the club are offered a massive fee for the winger.

Bale, 22, has been linked with a move to one of Europe's elite clubs but recently signed a new White Hart Lane contract that includes no release clause. That deal, though, will not stop Spurs selling Bale should they receive an offer of anything approaching the £80 million Real Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo.

An ESPN source said: "Yes, Bale might well have signed a new four-year contract, but that won't stop a club making a big enough offer if they wanted the player badly enough - and Spurs are not going to turn down £80 million or even €80 million.

"Of course that sounds a lot for Bale, but you have to consider that he is 22, and was Ronaldo worth that high a fee when he was 22? He wasn't."If you consider that Andy Carroll cost £35 million, than it is easy to see why Spurs would place such a massive value on Bale."

Bale's renewal comes at a time when no team was believed to be willing to meet Tottenham's valuation of the player. However, there are still reports linking Bale with a move away from the club this summer.

    Rodgers closing on signings

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claims to be close to bringing at least one fresh face into his squad, but is reluctant to reveal the identity of his targets.

The Reds are readying themselves for a pre-season tour of North America and hope to have extra bodies on board before they jet off.Rodgers is confident he will have bolstered his ranks prior to Liverpool's departure, with it possible that two acquisitions could be made.

Asked if he expected to have completed a signing before the Reds head to the States, Rodgers told Sky Sports News HD: "We hope so. There certainly won't be as many as has been labelled out."I think the reality is that for players to be associated with Liverpool is great, but the reality is that we have only made three or four enquiries about players.

"Hopefully we can close out one deal this week, maybe two."Hopefully we can do one and then look to add to it over the course of pre-season."Reports have suggested that Esteban Granero is a top target for Rodgers, with one approach for the Real Madrid midfielder having already been knocked back.

The new boss at Anfield is keeping his cards close to his chest, though, and will not be drawn on the finer details of his summer shopping list.He added: "I will never speak about targets or possible players, it's not something I like to do."All I will say is that there has been a whole raft of players linked with coming to Liverpool and there is very few of them that are actual targets for us."

    Mancini signs new contract

    robertomancinitrophyceleb20120513_576x324.jpg

Roberto Mancini has signed a new deal at Manchester City which keeps him at the club for another five years, running until the summer of 2017.

The deal follows the club's most successful season in more than four decades when they clinched the Premier League title on the final day with a thrilling 3-2 win over QPR.

Having lifted the FA Cup in his first year in Manchester, Mancini has earned praise for his handling of the club's stars - including the well-documented problems with Carlos Tevez - and has been rewarded for his efforts.

Mancini told the club's official website: "I am delighted to be able to give all of my efforts to Manchester City for a further five years. The opportunity which exists to build on our recent success is enormous. Manchester City is a fantastic football club, from the owner, chairman, Board and the executive team, through to the players, staff and fans. I am very much looking forward to the challenges and excitement ahead."

Interim Chief Executive Officer John MacBeath added: "Roberto's managerial credentials have been well proven in Europe for many years and in leading a team which has won the FA Cup and an unforgettable Barclays Premier League title in successive seasons, his ability to manage in the English domestic game is also undisputed. "This new agreement allows Roberto to focus on the challenge of guiding a team which is capable not only of defending the Premier League title, but one which can compete for European honours."
