Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand denies FA charge

    200856hp2.jpg

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has denied an FA charge of improper conduct in relation to comments posted on Twitter and requested a personal hearing from the governing body.

The charge is believed to relate to the aftermath of John Terry's race trial, at which he was acquitted, when Ferdinand quoted a tweet calling Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, who was a witness for the defense, a "choc-ice".

The term was in reference to Cole's testimony in court, in which he said that he did not hear Terry make a racist comment to Anton Ferdinand, brother of Rio, during the Blues' match against QPR last October at Loftus Road.

Ferdinand later defended his remark on Twitter, stating: "What I said is not a racist term. It is a type of slang [or] term used by many for someone who is being fake. So there."

The FA said in a statement: "The allegation is that the player acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute by making comments which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or color and/or race."

Terry wasalso charged by the FA with improper conduct last week for the original comments made to Anton Ferdinand, which the Chelsea captain immediately declared that he would contest.

Ferdinand could not have waited any longer to answer his own allegation, with his deadline being Thursday, and he has now elected to deny the charge.

Santos president: Neymar will not join Barcelona before 2014

Santos president Luis Alvaro Ribeiro has dismissed the possibility of Neymar joining Barcelona after the Olympics, insisting that the forward will, at the very least, see out the remaining two years of his contract with the club.

The Brazil international is widely expected to move to La Liga after the 2014 World Cup but Blaugrana vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu recently admitted that the Catalans would like to sign the striker before the close of the current transfer window.

However, Ribeiro claims that his Barca counterpart Sandro Rosell knows full well that attempting to do so would be an exercise in futility.

"Neymar is a phenomenon and I'm sure that given his performances at the Olympics, this year he will be ranked among the top three players in the world - and we will not be selling him," the Santos supremo is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

"Sandro Rosell is a very intelligent man and has enough information available to him to avoid wasting time trying to talk with Neymar [about moving] now. Neymar leaving before 2014 is impossible."

Indeed, Ribeiro revealed that he has no qualms about running the risk of the player leaving the Vila Belmiro on a free transfer in two years' time.

"What Neymar will generate for Santos in the next few years offsets the prospect of him leaving for nothing," he argued. "Besides, Neymar is happy here and we still have not lost hope of him continuing with us. Either way, Neymar will be free to decide his future in 2014."

AC Milan defender Bonera longing for Kaka return

    199272hp2.jpg

Daniele Bonera is hoping that AC Milan manages to re-sign Kaka from Real Madrid, arguing that the attacking midfielder still has so much to offer - on and off the pitch.

Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani revealed on Wednesday that he will soon meet with Blancos president Florentino Perez to discuss the Brazil international's return to San Siro, while at the same time admitting that the size of the transfer fee and the player's wages represent significant obstacles.

There are doubts over Kaka's fitness, given his three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu have been plagued by injury, but Bonera is in no doubt that the 2007 Ballon d'Or winner would be a tremendous addition to Massimiliano Allegri's squad,

"On a footballing level, he still has a lot to give, and he's also a great person," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "It would be a positive to have him here with us for a number of reasons, not least in the way he trains. Ricky is a fantastic professional and he would be a great example for all of the kids."

Bonera freely admits that the whole club could do with a lift following the sale of star duo Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Paris Saint-Germain in July.

However, the veteran center back insists that Milan can still be competitive this season, arguing that the club just needs to take a leaf out of Juventus' book.

"Technically, we have lost a lot," Bonera conceded, alluding to Milan's summer sales. "But football teaches us that the players are one thing and the team is another thing altogether. You can compensate for certain deficiencies in the collective and Juve are a good example of this. Last year nobody would have thought they would win the championship, but they finished the season undefeated.

"The fans must have faith - because we do. Building something again is the big challenge for all those who are still here."

Indeed, Bonera dismissed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso's suggestion that the Milan dressing room is split into several warring factions.

"Perhaps not having won anything in recent memory magnifies episodes and incidents that are actually quite common," the former Italy international mused. "A dose of indiscipline exists in all teams and all dressing rooms.

"It is true that at one point we went a bit off the mark in terms of our usual standards, but now the climate is very different."

The 31-year-old Bonera, who was capped 16 times by his country, joined Milan from Parma in 2006.

De Bruyne joins Werder Bremen on loan from Chelsea

Werder Bremen has announced the signing of attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne on loan from Chelsea.

The Belgium international's move to Stamford Bridge was confirmed during the January transfer window but he was left at Genk for the remainder of the season and only linked up with the Blues earlier this month.

However, the intention was always to loan De Bruyne out for a year and Bremen has now confirmed the 21-year-old's arrival at Weserstadion.

"We have been monitoring Kevin closely for several months have enjoyed a number of positive conversations with him and those in charge at Chelsea," CEO Klaus Allofs told the Bundesliga outfit's official website.

"We are pleased that we have been able to increase the quality in our squad with this deal."

De Bruyne, who has been capped twice by his country, came through the youth team ranks at Genk after being pried away from Gent as a teenager.

Chelsea striker Lukaku would only accept Premier League loan move

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is adamant that he would only accept a loan move away from Stamford Bridge if it were to another Premier League club.

The 19-year-old is the subject of an approach from Fulham over such a temporary deal with a season-long switch abroad not an option for the youngster, who has insisted that he "must play" first-team football in 2012-13.

"I did not sign for Chelsea to go into another championship," the Belgium international warned his club while speaking to the media.

Lukaku moved to Stamford Bridge last summer and made 12 appearances without scoring in his debut campaign, but has been impressive in preseason. He previously declared his desire to represent the club throughout his whole career.

"What I learned last season was positive. Training with great players improves you," Lukaku said. "Now I must play. In a few weeks we'll see what happens."

The Blues spent 18 million pounds to bring Lukaku to London from Anderlecht in 2011.

Napoli and Inter battle it out for Rossi

    146350hp2.jpg

Giuseppe Rossi has set his sights on a transfer to Serie A this summer, with Napoli and Inter both keen to sign the Villarreal star, Goal.com Italy has learned.

The Partenopei are in the market for attacking reinforcements following the departure of Ezequiel Lavezzi to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, and they see the 25-year-old as a valuable addition to their squad.

The forward is available on the cheap, given Villarreal's relegation to the Segunda Division last season, and an offer in the region of 7-8 million euros could be enough to lure him away from his current club.

The Partenopei are hopeful of getting Rossi even cheaper, though, as they are preparing an offer of 5 million euros plus bonuses.

Nevertheless, Napoli faces stiff competition in the race for Rossi's signature as Inter is also closely monitoring the attacker's situation.

Inter has made Brazil international Lucas Moura its primary transfer target this summer, but it considers the Italy international to be a capable alternative in case the club fails to lure the Sao Paulo winger to the Giuseppe Meazza.

Rossi is currently sidelined due to a knee injury which also kept him out of Euro 2012, but is nonetheless hopeful of securing a transfer to a top club in Italy, with his agent working hard to broker a deal.

Tottenham looking at other options after Adebayor jeopardizes move - Villas-Boas

    159554hp2.jpg

Tottenham is considering other options up front after Emmanuel Adebayor's financial stipulations threatened to derail his move from Manchester City, boss Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed.

Goal.com exclusively revealed on Wednesday that the Togolese's desire "to punish" his parent club by demanding all 4 million pounds of the two sides' agreed transfer fee could put an end to his permanent switch to White Hart Lane.

And, speaking to the media after Spurs' return from their tour of United States, Villas-Boas confirmed that his side was "looking at different options" as a result.

"Obviously there was an interest in Ade but we have a need first for Jermain [Defoe] to get back from his personal tragedy for the team to have further options in the striker position," said the 34-year-old, referring to the recent death of the forward's cousin.

The Tottenham manager also praised Gareth Bale, who had been at the center of controversy while Stateside over first his withdrawal from Great Britain's Olympic squad and then a row over a tackle by Liverpool's Charlie Adam.

"He's an unbelievable talent," Villas-Boas said. "As a manager you are trying to make sure you get the most of him out of him he's a tremendous physical athlete, of course, but one with fantastic football talent."

The ex-Chelsea boss went on to declare that, once his continuing efforts to bolster the squad are complete, the aim in 2012-13 will be to challenge for trophies - including, potentially, the Premier League.

"We are still building a team. The team can improve and we are looking to improve it," he continued. "This is obviously not the final product and as we go through August we have to get the right perspective as to where we can improve and where we will arrive.

"The natural progression for our team will be to fight for titles and this is what we want this year.

"Obviously the Premier League is the most difficult one. It's not impossible and it's a challenge we accepted in the beginning [when I was hired] so we will have to see how we can take on that responsibility."

IN terms of gold medal displays, it was definitely more Bradley Walsh than Bradley Wiggins. Yet if new boss Brendan Rodgers can ride his luck like this on a regular basis, maybe Liverpool can expect another spate of silverware. Outplayed, often outbattled and lucky to be level with the Belarus no-hopers, the Reds ended the evening with a place in the Europa League play-off round all but secured.

And after winger Stewart Downing’s fine 67th-minute winner, Rodgers said: “First and foremost it was a win and that was always going to be the most important thing in our first competitive game.

“We are nowhere near where I want us to be in relation to fluency and charisma within the team. “But what is important until we arrive at that time is that we fight for the shirt, defend and play with desire and passion. We definitely did that. “It’s been a difficult pre- season in terms of travel and the squad not all being together, so to win is incredible. It was a relief.”

The fact it came courtesy of Downing was even more remarkable — and perhaps another hint Rodgers has luck on his side given the winger’s woeful return so far. Downing’s 30-yard rocket was enough to seal a first-leg win in this third-round qualifier, and was only his third goal since arriving last summer.

It was also incredibly harsh on a Gomel side who had stretched Liverpool to breaking point throughout and looked odds-on to give Rodgers a baptism of fire. The new Anfield gaffer has already had enough to deal with off the pitch, as the Andy Carroll saga rumbles along like one of the striker’s loping runs.

Daniel Agger’s future is also up in the air after he missed the trip through injury — according to Liverpool — yet was fit according to his agent. They could certainly have done with the Danish centre- back, on the radar for both Manchester City and Barcelona, as they toiled worryingly to overcome the boys from Belarus.

In fact Gomel missed FOUR golden chances in two minutes of chaos as the interval whistle approached, with the Reds’ backline falling to pieces. Martin Skrtel, another centre-back interesting City, was shrugged off far too easily by Aleksandr Alumona, and Brad Jones had to block his angled effort behind.

Only a flying intervention from Jamie Carragher, in his 700th appearance, denied the same man a tap-in, before Dmitri Platonov and Sergei Kozeka fluffed easy chances. And within 60 seconds of the restart, Platonov rounded Jones only for his first touch to be far too heavy and the lucky Reds were let off again.

Sadly for Liverpool, Joe Cole limped off in his first competitive game in a Red shirt after just 23 minutes with a pulled hamstring. Without him, they barely mustered a chance before Downing cut inside to unleash that rocket to get Rodgers up and running.

Inter Milan close in on Lucas Moura

    lucasmourapresser2012_576x324.jpg

Inter Milan have edged closer to signing Brazil starlet Lucas Moura, with reports in Italy claiming the Serie A outfit have agreed a transfer fee with his current club Sao Paulo.

Lucas has also been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid over the summer. But Sky Sport Italia reported late on Thursday evening that Inter had trumped their powerful rivals by agreeing to a €27 million transfer fee, which could rise to €32 million depending on appearances.

All clubs had previously balked at Sao Paulo's €40 million valuation of Lucas, with United understood to have failed with bids before Inter increased their pursuit of the 19-year-old.
Earlier on Thursday, Inter president Massimo Moratti confirmed director Marco Branca had been in "ongoing" negotiations with Sao Paulo officials over the transfer fee.

"As you know we are strongly interested in the guy," Moratti told Sky Sport Italia. "But our interest does not compel us to accept every kind of condition imposed."Lucas and his Brazil team-mates, meanwhile, are preparing to take on Honduras in the quarter-finals of the London Olympics at St. James' Park this Saturday.

:cool:Man Utd chief expects to spend £40m

    shinjikagawasmilepresser20120712_576x324.jpg

Manchester United expect to spend £40 million in the summer transfer window, according to the club's Chief Operating Officer Michael Bolingbroke.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already brought in Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa for £17 million from Borussia Dortmund and Crewe teenager Nick Powell for £4 million.

United have also bid for Sao Paulo and Brazil youngster Lucas Moura - and Bolingbroke said more money has been put aside to strengthen the squad, suggesting Ferguson has at least £20 million more at his disposal.

They have a projected net spend of £40 million and money has already been raised by selling Ji-sung Park to QPR and letting Ritchie de Laet and Matty James go to Leicester. Ferguson's transfer budget could be increased further if Dimitar Berbatov leaves the club.Speaking at an investor roadshow ahead of the club's IPO, Bolingbroke said that United's net spend over the last 10-15 years had averaged out at between £20-25 million but added: "We are giving guidance at the moment that the current transfer period could result in net expenditure nearer £40 million."
