A U.S. jury has found Samsung guilty of copying the iPhone and determined the company must pay Apple $1,051,855,000 in damages.

The Verge breaks down some of the damages:
- Prevail: $57,000,000
- Infused 4G: $44,792,974
- Transform: $954,060
- Replenish: $3,350,256
- Mesmerize: $53,123,612

The jury also found that all Apple's patents were valid and Samsung willfully infringed on them in many cases. Notably, they determined the iPhone's trade dress (visual appearance) is protectable but only on the iPhone 3G.

Ruling on Samsung's case against Apple, the jury found that Apple did not violate any of Samsung's patents and awarded Samsung $0 in damages.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has addressed employees following the company's win over Samsung for patent infringement.

Here's the memo sent to employees as obtained by 9to5Mac:

-----
Today was an important day for Apple and for innovators everywhere.

Many of you have been closely following the trial against Samsung in San Jose for the past few weeks. We chose legal action very reluctantly and only after repeatedly asking Samsung to stop copying our work. For us this lawsuit has always been about something much more important than patents or money. It's about values. We value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. And we do this to delight our customers, not for competitors to flagrantly copy.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the jury who invested their time in listening to our story. We were thrilled to finally have the opportunity to tell it. The mountain of evidence presented during the trial showed that Samsung's copying went far deeper than we knew.

The jury has now spoken. We applaud them for finding Samsung's behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right.

I am very proud of the work that each of you do.

Today, values have won and I hope the whole world listens.

Tim
-----

The jury awarded Apple over $1.05 billion in damages.

According to the 2011 "Top 100" brand list compiled by Millward Brown, a British brand consultancy firm, Samsung ranked at 67th position and was one of the world's most valuable brands,[27] with a period of significant growth during the 2009–2010 period (the corporation's brand value, estimated to be as much as US$1.1 billion, grew by 80 percent during this time).

Ruling on Samsung's case against Apple, the jury found that Apple did not violate any of Samsung's patents and awarded Samsung $0 in damages. However, the jury also found that Samsung did not breach its obligations when developing the UTMS standard and that they did not violate the antitrust act.

Finally, the jury decided that Samsung patents '516 and '941 are barred by patent exhaustion from being enforced against Apple

This is just one side of the story. US court ruling is very biased and that behavior is always expected regarding Us products.

(CNN) -- A South Korea court ruled that both Apple and Samsung violated each other's patents, in a case that mimics legal battles between the electronics giants around the world.
The Seoul District Court ordered each side to pay the other damages. Apple must pay Samsung 40 million won ($35,300); Samsung is to pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000).
The court banned sales in South Korea of Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad 2, Samsung's Galaxy SII and Galaxy Nexus smartphones and Galaxy Tab and Galaxy 10.1 tablet computers.
Both Samsung and Apple may appeal the lower court decision.

    Apple vs. Samsung legal war
The decision comes as a jury in California decides a similar patent case in the U.S., with much higher stakes for the companies.
Apple accuses Samsung of copying the design of the iPhone and iPad, and is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion. Samsung denies any wrongdoing and is counter suing Apple for $519 million, also for patent infringement.
Similar patent cases between Apple and Samsung are being heard in Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia.

:frown:

    APPLE:

    SAMSUNG:
Today's verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer.

:dull:

:yes::yes:
