Parma 1-1 AC Milan: El Shaarawy strike not enough for lackluster Rossoneri

    214662hp2.jpg

AC Milan was unconvincing in the Serie A once again, playing out a 1-1 draw with Parma at Stadio Ennio Tardini to heap more pressure on under-fire coach Massimiliano Allegri.

After a conservative first half from both sides, Stephan El Shaarawy opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a surging run and finish, only for Daniele Galloppa to drill home the equalizer for the hosts midway through the second period.

The Rossoneri could not find another goal as they were forced to settle for the draw, leaving them in ninth place, six points off the pace of early league leaders Juventus.

Bojan Krkic was chosen ahead of Giampaolo Pazzini to partner El Shaarawy in attack, while Kevin-Prince Boateng returned from suspension to line up just behind the forwards.

Both sides struggled to establish a rhythm in the opening exchanges, though Boateng’s shot from the edge of the area on 14 minutes required a safe pair of hands from Antonio Mirante.
The Parma keeper was forced to work much harder by Boateng moments later, as he got down low to make a fantastic stop off a header by the Ghanaian from Ignazio Abate’s cross.

The hosts then had a penalty appeal turned down, after Cristian Zapata’s challenge on Alessandro Lucarelli inside the area was deemed legitimate, following a scramble to defend a corner. The match was shaping up to be a conservative contest, with both sides adopting a pragmatic rather than penetrative approach to their attacking play as the first half wore on.

However, Sotiris Ninis nearly broke the monotony with a slide-rule pass to set up Dorlan Pabon in a good position, but the Colombian’s strike was fisted away from danger by Christian Abbiati. That sparked a flurry of activity to end the first half. A fine piece of dribbling from El Shaarawy took him past two Parma defenders, but he could not pick out the lurking Bojan with his cross.

The Spanish striker then curled a beautiful strike inches over the crossbar moments later from just outside the box, moments before Ninis drilled just off target with the last kick of the half.
It was a rejuvenated Milan side that emerged from the interval, and five minutes after the restart, they stormed into the lead. Bojan fed El Shaarawy on the run, and the in-form striker raced past his marker and buried confidently under Mirante.

The Rossoneri should have been further ahead two minutes later, after a clipped ball from Bojan caught Parma by surprise, leaving Boateng alone against Mirante, but he somehow headed wide when it would have been easier to hit the target.

Milan nearly paid for its profligacy within moments, as the Rossoneri switched off at the back when defending a cross. Massimo Gobbi seemed set to turn home at the far post, but Mario Yepes recovered just in time to block him on the goal line. But the home side would find a way through in the 66th minute, as Galloppa smashed home a low drive from outside the box after a neat layoff from a set piece.

The stage was set for a grandstand finish, and Mirante was twice called upon to keep Parma in the game. The keeper first thwarted El Shaarawy from range, before pushing a stinging free-kick from Riccardo Montolivo around the post.

However, that was about as close as Milan would get to a winner, and Parma successfully thwarted the visitors for the remainder of the match to claim a deserved point

:(Manchester United 2-3 Tottenham: Vertonghen, Dempsey, and Bale on target as Spurs weather second half storm

    article-2210378-1544C4F3000005DC-723_634x388.jpg

Theater of Nightmares no more. Tottenham ended its dismal 23-year run at Manchester United with a 3-2 victory in a quite preposterous match.

Andre Villas-Boas’ team completely dominated the first half and was good value for its 2-0 lead at the break, courtesy of goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale. But Sir Alex Ferguson fired up the halftime hairdryer, sending on Wayne Rooney and United were transformed after the break.

In a crazy 140-second spell at the start of the second half, Nani finished off Rooney’s stunning right wing cross, Clint Dempsey restored Spurs’ two-goal advantage and Shinji Kagawa was the calmest man in Manchester as he made the score 3-2.It was breathless, ridiculous football that demonstrated once again why there is no substitute for the weekly high drama of the Premier League.

United was utterly dominant for the rest of the game and carved out a series of excellent chances but fortune was not on its side as Rooney’s free kick crashed off the post, Carrick hit the bar and van Persie wasted a golden chance for the equalizer.

The home side’s fightback was inevitable, even though the visitors had completely commanded the opening period as they set about annexing a horror run at Old Trafford that stretched back to 1989 and 26 matches, 22 of which had been lost.

There has been a growing fluency to Tottenham’s football after the early teething problems under Villas-Boas, when they collected just two points from their opening three fixtures.Whatever the masses think of the Portugese, he doesn’t do fear and it was apparent in the confident manner his team set about their evening’s work.

Spurs kept the ball for a minute-and-half before converted central defender Vertonghen made a break forward from his left-back berth. Cutting inside, he shared a crisp one-two with Bale before surging into an ocean of space and having a pop with his right foot from inside the area. His shot was no better than reasonable but a deflection off Jonny Evans’ hand wrong-footed Anders Lindegaard and put the visitors a goal up.For the fifth time in six league matches this season, United had conceded the first goal. It was the least the visitors’ excellent opening spell deserved.

Mousa Dembele and Sandro controlled the midfield against Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, and Spurs’ passing was sharper and more confident.

After 21 minutes, the impressive Vertonghen had a good opportunity to double his own account and put his team in the rare territory of being favorites to win at Old Trafford. The 8 million pound summer signing from Ajax was unmarked in the box when Bale rifled over a free kick from the right flank but he couldn’t get over the ball and sent his header over the bar.Ten minutes later, Spurs got the second goal that their adventure and precision merited. It came from another electric counterattack, led inevitably by the excellent Dembele.

The second of Tottenham’s outstanding Belgian southpaws tapped a neat pass to Bale in the middle, who left Rio Ferdinand trailing in his wake with almost embarrassing ease as he zoomed into the penalty box. On his less favored right, a goal was far from certain but the Welshman side-footed his finish emphatically across Lindegaard.

Villas-Boas celebrated like he had suffered every one of those 23 years of hurt. By contrast, the growling presence of Ferguson in the other dugout left you almost fearful for the treatment he was going to dish out to the United players at halftime.

The Scot’s response, other than to spray his hairdryer around the dressing room, was to haul off the anonymous Ryan Giggs and bring on Rooney, with Shinji Kagawa moving out to the left flank. The change paid immediate dividends. Rooney’s brilliant cross from the right was tapped in by Nani six minutes after the break to herald a crazy spell of three goals in three minutes.

A minute later Dempsey restored Tottenham’s two-goal advantage. The American smashed in the rebound after Lindegaard had parried Bale’s first-time shot following a delicious reverse pass from Jermain Defoe that had once again left Ferdinand floundering.

Spurs’ lead was gone in sixty seconds. A brilliant van Persie pass put Kagawa through on goal and, with the least amount of fuss possible, the Japanese midfielder made it 3-2.

By now, United had a head of steam and Old Trafford was pulsating to the beat of a quite preposterous match. It seemed almost run-of-the-mill when Rooney smashed a 30-yard free-kick against the post and the ball teetered provocatively in the six-yard box before being cleared.

Van Persie had a goal disallowed after 63 minutes and, then, six minutes later, 75,000 souls prepared themselves for what seemed an inevitable equalizer as the Dutchman raced on to a Carrick pass 10 yards from goal in his favorite inside left channel. The sighs of relief from the away end were audible as the drilled finish went well wide of the far post.United continued to dominate but, for once, was unable to make its possession and opportunities count late on.

Sevilla 2-3 Barcelona: Villa caps remarkable Catalan comeback against 10-man Rojiblancos

Barcelona scored two late goals to come from behind and take all three points against Sevilla with a 3-2 win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

With the Catalan giants in control during the early stages it came as a surprise when the Rojiblancos went ahead through Piotr Trochowski in the 26th minute. From then on the hosts grew in confidence and they doubled their advantage early in the second half through Alvaro Negredo.

Cesc Fabregas pulled one back for Tito Vilanova's side in the 53rd minute and the hosts were then reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes as Gary Medel was shown a red card. Barca pushed for more goals and got them with Fabregas netting his second before a David Villa winner ensured its 100 percent record stayed intact.

Despite being away from home, Barcelona instantly asserted itself on the opposition by retaining the ball and producing some spectacularly intricate football.

One such moment led to the team's first effort on target in the 13th minute as Xavi, Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi combined beautifully in the final third Its passing created a chance for the Argentine superstar to shoot from the left side of the box but Andres Palop denied him by getting a strong hand to the ball.

It was clear from the start that Sevilla was going to rely on the counterattack in order to threaten the visitors, and the Rojiblancos broke at speed in the 26th minute. Medel's effort from distance was deflected off of Javier Mascherano and straight to the feet of Trochowski. The German shifted the ball onto his left and rifled a shot past Valdes, with the keeper's weak hand not enough to keep it out.

Barca almost silenced the raucous crowd by drawing level just seconds later. Fabregas challenged Palop for a lofted cross into the box and although the ball fell to Messi just 12 yards from goal, Hedwiges Maduro's excellent block kept the hosts ahead.

Sevilla, though, took charge of the game from then on and three minutes into the second half it doubled the lead. Sergio Busquets' pass was intercepted by Medel and he fed Negredo between Alexandre Song and Mascherano. The striker held off the challenge of the Cameroonian before dinking a delightful finish over the onrushing keeper.

The Blaugrana was unperturbed and after Pedro saw his volley cleared off the line, it halved the deficit with 53 minutes played. A brilliant piece of interplay ended with a loose pass falling to Fabregas who curled home an accurate effort from 20 yards.

Vilanova's men had rediscovered their dominance from the early exchanges but were denied from equalizing on the hour mark through some terrific goalkeeping. Messi bent a brilliant 25-yard free kick that looked destined for the top corner but Palop rose brilliantly to claw it away.

As the Catalan giants' frustration grew, tempers began to flare. A number of rash challenges culminated in a confrontation between Medel and Fabregas in the 72nd minute. The pair came face to face and following an exaggerated reaction from the Barca player, the Chilean was shown a red card.

Fabregas then popped up in the final minutes of normal time as he was picked out in the area by Messi and he stabbed the ball past Palop to salvage what looked like a point for his team.

However, Barca continued to attack and its unforgiving efforts were rewarded as second-half substitute Villa charged into the area before driving the ball past Palop to seal all three points in stoppage time.

Barca remains at the Liga summit, two points ahead of Malaga, while Sevilla remains in fifth position and will rue the missed chance to jump up the table.

Juventus 4-1 Roma: Disjointed Giallorossi undone by early Bianconeri blitz

    214696hp2.jpg

Juventus romped to a 45th unbeaten Serie A game with a 4-1 victory over Roma on Saturday.

Fans at the Juventus Arena were in full voice long before kickoff, but they could never have predicted the start that their side would make to the match, as it raced into a three goal lead after 19 minutes.

Andrea Pirlo drilled home the opener in the 11th minute directly from a free-kick, before an Artuo Vidal penalty and a further goal from Alessandro Matri seemed to put the hosts out of sight against an overrun Roma side, which simply had no answer to wave after wave of attacks.

The Giallorossi would manage to claw their way back into contention during an improved second-half display, and a penalty from Osvaldo in the 69th minute gave the the faintest of hopes.

But there was nothing more to come from the visitors, who could not recover from their first-half fallacies as Sebastian Giovinco finished off a late counter-attack to send Juventus into a three point lead atop the table.Matri was one of five changes for the Bianconeri from the 0-0 draw with Fiorentina, with Mirko Vucinic also handed a place in the starting XI in place of Fabio Quagliarella.

Meanwhile, Roma saw captain Daniele De Rossi return to the starting lineup after coming on as a substitute during the 1-1 draw with Sampdoria, while Mattia Destro was dropped in favor of Osvaldo.

There were already warning signs of things to come for Roma, as Claudio Marchisio came within inches of turning home a dangerous cross at the far post, moments before he was clumsily fouled on the edge of the box by Taddei, who was lucky to escape with a yellow card.
However, that would be the extent of the Brazilian’s fortunes, as his sloppy positioning in a wall allowed Pirlo to drill home a low free-kick into the corner from 20 yards out.

Five minutes later, a shambolic piece of defending on a cross forced Leandro Castan to concede a penalty in his attempts to clear the ball, from which Vidal stepped up to confidently bury the spot-kick.Erik Lamela had an instant chance to reduce the arrears, but after ghosting in unmarked at the back post to meet a cross, he sidefooted wide from a few yards out.

Vidal would turn provider moments later, slipping in Matri past a collapsing Roma defense for a deflected finish beyond an unconvincing attempt to save by Maarten Stekelenburg.Roma was awful in every area of the pitch, but its defending was especially shambolic as Juve had chance after chance to score again.

Stekelenburg spilled a routine shot that was almost pounced upon by Vucinic and seconds later, Marchisio smashed against the crossbar after breaking free yet again of the visitors’ backline.

The woodwork would come to Roma’s rescue once again, as Vucinic’s dipping shot from just inside the area cannoned off the top of the bar, after he was left completely unmarked. The pattern seemed set to continue after the break, as a stinging drive from Vucinic seemed to be heading for the top corner, but for the fingertips of Stekelenburg. However Juve, despite its continued dominance, did not display the cutthroat intensity of the opening period, as it seemed content to sit on a three-goal advantage.

That invited Roma back into the match, but the visitors, despite an improved display, were unable to penetrate the defense of the Bianconeri, who were only too happy to sit deep and break on the counter.

Roma was handed a lifeline in the 69th minute, after a careless barge by Leonardo Bonucci into Mattia Destro conceded a penalty, from which Osvaldo coolly sent Buffon the wrong way.Osvaldo would nearly come up with the goods again, with a snap shot from inside the area that brought the very best out of Buffon, as the visitors looked to press forward in numbers late on.

However, time was not on Roma’s side, and Giovinco finished matters after rounding Stekelenburg on a late counterattack to put the icing on the cake of another Juventus victory in the new season.

Chelsea star Torres wants no rest

    214542hp2.jpg

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has made it clear to Roberto Di Matteo that he is in no need of a rest, insisting that "if you have great players, you have to use them".

The Spaniard, whose goal in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Arsenal was his fifth in all competitions this season, has started every game up front for the Blues so far in 2012-13, with Daniel Sturridge injured and new signing Victor Moses on the bench.

The former Liverpool man is adamant that he is more than happy to continue playing as many games as possible.

"I've been resting last season too many games, so I'm fresh now. I'm feeling good," Torres told Chelsea TV. "If you have great players, you have to use them. That gives you more chances to score and to win."

The 28-year-old scored the opener at the Emirates Stadium as Chelsea secured a hard-fought win against a Gunners side that had yet to lose in the Premier League and he observed that Roberto Di Matteo's men have found the perfect blend.

"Arsenal are a great team in possession but we were not scared to keep the ball," the 50 million pound man noted. "Also, this is the best way to defend, and this is one of the main reasons why Chelsea are not conceding too many goals, because we have the ball and we do it with quality."

Aston Villa 1-1 West Brom: Bent grabs late equalizer

    214922hp2.jpg

Darren Bent came off the bench to clinch a hard-earned point for Villa against high-flying West Brom in a pulsating West Midlands derby at Villa Park.

Both teams cancelled each other out in a scrappy opening period but the contest came alive after the break as Paul Lambert's side fought back after the visiting team got its nose in front.

The recalled Gabriel Agbonlahor looked eager from the start to continue the form he showed at during the week and he almost cut open the Baggies rearguard with a darting run and a whipped cross that was just beyond the prowling Christian Benteke.

Villa gradually took a foothold in midfield and Australian winger Brett Holman was finding plenty of space in front of the Baggies box. Foster had to look lively to tip Holman's 30-yard thunderbolt just over the bar and shortly later the Aussie screwed another effort wide of the target after good work from Agbonlahor.

Baggies skipper Chris Brunt went down clutching his left hamstring and while he hobbled off Ciaran Clark rose to head an Agbonlahor cross just wide.

Brunt was replaced by Graham Dorrans, but while West Brom was still reorganizing, Holman out-muscled Gareth McAuley and saw his deflected effort tipped wide.

Steve Clarke's troops were desperate for the halftime whistle and their cause wasn't helped when Billy Jones went down clutching his right knee and was replaced by Gabriel Tamas a minute before the break.

The Baggies were on the ropes, but they came out after the break intent on giving as good as they got.

They gave a warning of what was to come when Shane Long's header was ruled offside. Villa didn't heed the warning and in 51 minutes the club was punished when Morrison beat the offside trap to send in a cross that Vlaarcould only divert into the path of Long who scored from close range.

Villa recovered from this setback and piled forward. Benteke was wasteful with a couple of opportunities and Lowton saw a 30-yard curler go just over the bar.

Paul Lambert made three substitutions in two minutes and two of them were involved in the leveler on 80 minutes.

With 10 minutes to go, a Barry Bannan cross was headed on by Vlaar and then Clark's volley was blocked only for Bent to bundle the ball home.

In a grandstand finish, Bent almost claimed the points for Villa but he scooped a 20-yard effort just wide.

The Baggies emerged from being under the cosh almost to grab the spoils but Romelu Lukaku's angled drive was blocked by Guzan.

Barcelona's Thiago faces eight weeks out with a knee injury

    160404hp2.jpg

Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara will be out of action for eight weeks after rupturing a colateral ligament in his right knee, the club announced on its official website Sunday.

If Thiago is out for the duration of the predicted two-month time frame, then the 21-year-old could miss as many as 11 matches for the Blaugrana, including this coming weekend’s Clasico against Real Madrid. Thiago picked up the injury in Barca's 3-2 win against Sevilla on Saturday, when Tito Vilanova's side came back from two goals down to win in the third minute of stoppage time.

In more positive news for the Camp Nou club, Andres Ineista, Carles Puyol and Adriano have been confirmed fit to face Benfica in the UEFA Champions League this week and Los Blancos in the first La Liga Clasico of the campaign. The two Spanish giants have already faced off twice this season, in which Jose Mourinho's men came out on top over two Supercopa legs.

Altidore stays hot with another goal and assist for AZ Alkmaar

    206009hp2.jpg

Jozy Altidore's run of form for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar has showed no signs of slowing down.

Altidore maintained his hot start to the Eredivisie season, scoring another goal and coming through with a late game-tying assist to help carry his side to a 3-3 draw with RKC Waalwijk in Sunday's league match.

Altidore scored in the 25th minute, receiving the ball with his back to goal about 35 yards out, turning and weaving through three defenders before slotting a low shot from the top of the box inside the left post to level the score at 2-2.

With AZ trailing in the second half, Altidore had a would-be second goal waved off for being a step offside in the 77th minute, but he came through soon after with a clutch assist, squaring a header for Adam Maher, who finished inside the area in the 87th minute.

Altidore just missed a chance to win it at the start of stoppage time, taking down a ball off his chest and going to ground to try and put it on frame from close range, only to miss the post by inches.

The goal was Altidore's league-leading eighth in Eredivisie play and ninth in all competitions, and he is well on his way to surpassing his career-high tally of 19 goals in all competitions from a season ago.

Newcastle boss Pardew reiterates England ambitions

    214053hp2.jpg

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has reiterated that he would be interested in becoming England manager in the future.

Pardew arrived at Sports Direct Arena to replace the popular Chris Hughton in 2010, and, after seeing his reputation soar with the Tyneside club's fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, he has made no secret in the past of his desire to take charge of the Three Lions. The club gave Pardew a new eight-year contract this past Thursday, and Pardew hopes to honor the deal before considering his future -- one that he thinks should involve the England national team.

"I do have ambitions internationally, I would like to do that at some point," Pardew told reporters. "Hopefully, I will see this contract out and then see what I'm going to do later on. I have always felt that a person can be a success as England manager. I won't change my opinion on that, but I don't think it's easy.

"Roy Hodgson probably has a tough spell as England manager, because our pool of players is not as great as it used to be. Ultimately my ambition might reach that conclusion: to be England manager. It's not something I would not do, and it's not something I want to do right now."

Pardew also praised Newcastle owner Mike Ashley after the pair's recent contract negotiations, revealing it was the Magpies' owner who suggested the length of the deal.

"Both of us looked at the contract and felt it lacked a bit of security. So this contract is more secure for Mike in terms of keeping me at the football club," Pardew said. "The eight years came from Mike. I never got to the point of talking about how long I wanted the contract for. He spoke to me about eight years - and I thought: 'OK!'"
