Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 Athletic Bilbao: Late Briand winner maintains perfect record

    222243hp2.jpg

Olympique Lyonnais maintained its 100 percent record in Group I as the club defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in the Europa League at Stade de Gerland on Thursday evening.

Lisandro Lopez opened the scoring midway through the second half, before Ibai Gomez cancelled it out with a sumptuous half volley from distance after sustained pressure from the visiting side.

Despite a frantic effort, Les Gones would reclaim the advantage as Jimmy Briand tapped into an empty net to leave Athletic on the edge of Europa League elimination.

The French side fielded Samuel Umtiti for his first start of the season at left back, while also resting Bafetimbi Gomis with Marcelo Bielsa preferring Aritz Aduriz to Fernando Llorente up front in a surprisingly slow start in the Rhone Valley.

Neither side could exactly assert authority in the opening stages of the encounter, as Lyon was denied a decent opportunity by the offside flag. Nevertheless, the first chance of the game fell to Steed Malbranque, who opted for goal, rather than a continuation of a move.

At the other end, Athletic was penetrating, and the progress was curtailed by a fine Remy Vercoutre save. Aduriz found space in the box to fire a considerably acute shot at the goalkeeper who was equal to it, parrying away to safety.

Remi Garde's men were far more solid at the back than in their previous Europa League encounter - a nervy 4-3 win over Israeli outfit Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona, and the home side was looking to quash any threat. Oscar De Marcos caused slight alarm with a fine touch yards in front of Dejan Lovren, before Bakary Kone's intervention.

The Croatia international redeemed himself seconds later, as a poor Anthony Reveillere back pass was cut out by Aduriz, with Lovren producing a brilliant sliding tackle to thwart the visiting team once more, before Malbranque further tested Gorka Iraizoz with a stinging low effort.

The second half was equally slow in tempo, though signs of an imminent goal were growing as De Marcos raced through on the wing. He again opted to test Vercoutre, rather than squaring for waiting teammates.

Nevertheless, a goal did arrive soon after. Reveillere delivered in an angled cross on the right-wing, which was met powerfully by Lopez, who headed past Iraizoz and into the net for his 25th European goal on 54 minutes.

Los Leones were denied by the woodwork two minutes later, as a fine Iker Muniain pass opened up Andoni Iraola on the wing. Vercoutre inexplicably rushed out to meet the defender, who lobbed the goalkeeper before clipping the bar, as Aduriz surprisingly wasted the rebound with a poor finish.

Marcelo Bielsa's men were once more denied as Ander Iturraspe's weighted pass into an on-side Markel Susaeta failed to take advantage of some sloppy play by the Lyon goalkeeper.

Aduriz was sacrificed for Llorente midway through the second half, as Bilbao searched for the equalizer, but they were close to falling further behind as substitute Gomis held off Iturraspe before firing inches wide.

Despite sustained pressure, the visiting side was rewarded finally. A speculative lofted ball from Iraola was helped on by the powerful Llorente, as substitute Gomez struck an exquisite half volley into the net, and send the travelling support into delirium.

Lyon pressure to regain their advantage, and only a world-class stop by Iraizoz would stop Gomis from achieving that, after the dread locked forward let fly with a dipping effort from range, before the goalkeeper repeated the trick once more to prevent the substitute.

The frantic end to the match continued as Susaeta latched onto Llorente's pass, before seeing his goal-bound effort tipped over by Vercoutre, as Lyon hit on the counter with five minutes to go.

The winner came as Gomis' effort was parried into the path of Briand, who would be afforded an easy tap-in to condemn last season's runner up to a second defeat in the group.

Lyon tops Group I with a 100 percent record, eight points ahead of the Basque outfit, which will now be seeking revenge at San Mames in two weeks' time.

:(:(:(Manchester United midfielder Kagawa ruled out for a month with knee injury

    205468hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Shinji Kagawa will be sidelined for up to a month with a knee injury.

The Japanese international was taken off at halftime during United's 3-2 UEFA Champions League win over Braga on Tuesday after aggravating the problem. Kagawa will now miss Sunday’s trip to face Chelsea, along with the visit of Arsenal on Nov. 3 and is a doubt for the Champions League trip to Galatasaray 17 days later.

"It's a similar [knee] injury to the one Ashley Young had," Ferguson told reporters. "He's going to be out for 3-to-4 weeks. Playing on with the injury didn't help the situation for him."

Kagawa has made a steady start to his Old Trafford career, scoring two goals in six games in the Premier League, and he should be fit in time to play a part in his first Manchester derby on Dec. 9.

Ferguson did reveal some good news, with the word that Chris Smalling is back in training, and he hopes fellow defensive partner Phil Jones will step up his rehabilitation in 10 days’ time.

Casillas: Pepe not to blame for Dortmund defeat

    219619hp2.jpg

Iker Casillas has urged fans and media not to blame his defensive colleague Pepe for Real Madrid's loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Jurgen Klopp's men downed the reigning La Liga champions 2-1 on Wednesday, as Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer scored the goals to boost Die Schwarzgelben's hopes of qualification.

Portguese international Pepe made a horrible mistake to gift their opponents the opening goal, as his limp pass allowed Lewandowski through on goal to finish. But Casillas preferred to turn the spotlight on Los Blancos' weaker left flank rather than apportion individual blame.

"Pepe played a superb game, and you cannot judge him by that goal. We've been very good in defense and set pieces, but they [took advantage of] our left wing," the goalkeeper told Goal.com.

Casillas acknowledged the fair result, stating that "the very best of Dortmund has taken to the field" and the 2-1 win was deserved.

Despite the loss, the Madrid stalwart remains optimistic of progression to the last 16 of Europe's elite club competition.

"Ajax have beaten Manchester City, so the second leg match [against Dortmund] will be very important. [It's] vital to get the victory to take the three points," Casillas said.

    Barcelona appeals Mascherano ban

    201186hp2.jpg

Barcelona has announced on its official website that its has lodged an appeal with the Appeals Committee of La Liga after Javier Mascherano was handed a one-match ban following his red card last weekend.

The Argentina international was dismissed in Barca's 5-4 league win over Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday after being booked twice by referee Jose Paradas.

The Blaugrana had presented an appeal against the referee’s post-match report, and now, after learning of the decision to suspend the Argentine for one match, they have lodged another appeal with the Appeals Committee.

The Catalans are keen to have Mascherano available for their next Liga fixture against Rayo Vallecano, as center backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique are still sidelined with injury problems.

Mascherano, 28, has made 12 official appearances for Barcelona so far this season.

Heynckes: Robben could return next week

    201340hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is hopeful that Arjen Robben can make his comeback in next week's DFB Pokal (German Cup) match against Kaiserslautern.

The Netherlands international has been out of action since Bayern's 3-0 Bundesliga win over Wolfsburg on Sept. 25, and has since been working on his recovery.

"Arjen trained really well on Tuesday. He had no pain at all. He'll play plenty of very good games for us and score important goals in the future," Heynckes told the official Bayern website. "I think he could be a candidate for the cup against Kaiserslautern. I'm optimistic."

The 67-year-old then went on to praise Thomas Muller following his impressive performances so far this year.

"He's back to his best this season, agile, lively and fresh," Heynckes said. "It's having an effect on our game. He's one of the leading players in the team, he's an international, he happily takes responsibility, he leads from the front and he's always totally committed. It's fantastic to see him putting on a show."

Heynckes also discussed Bayern's hectic schedule and stressed that he will continue to rest his key players whenever possible.

"When you're playing every three days, you're never going to produce an absolutely top performance every time," Heynckes said. "It's not possible. The demands we have at the moment can't simply be spread across 11 sets of shoulders. All the players have to play their part, and the game in Lille proved that to me yet again. I'll definitely be making a couple of changes for next Wednesday's cup tie against Kaiserslautern."

Bendtner targets starting berth for Juventus

    216076hp2.jpg

Nicklas Bendtner is desperate to get regular playing time at Juventus, as he feels he has what it takes to succeed at the Serie A champions.

The Denmark international joined Juve from Arsenal on a one-year loan deal in the summer transfer window, but has so far mainly been warming the bench at the Bianconeri.

The 24-year-old came off the bench in Juventus' 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw against Nordsjaelland on Tuesday, and he is keen to get more game time in the upcoming weeks.

"I have confidence in my own qualities, and I know that I have what it takes to make it at this club. I don't see why I shouldn't be playing in this team, and I hope to become a starter shortly," Bendtner told TV2. "I want to play more games and I'm confident I'll get more playing time."

Juventus currently sits atop the Serie A standings after a 7-0-1 start and is preparing for an away match against Catania.

Sneijder highly motivated to return from injury, says Stramaccioni

    221769hp2.jpg

Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni says that Wesley Sneijder is highly motivated to return to match action again, but added that the Nerazzurri will not rush his comeback as they do not want to take any unnecessary risks. The Netherlands international is currently sidelined with a thigh injury, but resumed individual training earlier this week.

"I like what I've seen from him, he's highly motivated. He wants to get back as quickly as possible," Stramaccioni said at a press conference. "Wesley's getting restless, but, as you know, players will only return if they're 100 percent. I don't like to rush anyone back.

"He had his first tests with [Inter Milan doctor Franco Combi] yesterday, and, when he's available for selection, then we'll talk about his return to action."

Stramaccioni then went on to discuss Inter's progress in recent weeks, and stressed that the club will remain humble.

"We're working well at the moment, we saw that on Sunday. We're relaxed and keeping our feet on the ground," Stramaccioni said. "We have it in our minds to work hard and improve game by game without taking any notice of the league table, which could distract us from our main goal which is hard graft."

Inter's next test is Thursday's UEFA Europa League game at home against Partizan.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Dortmund loss no great drama

    221919hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that Real Madrid's 2-1 Champions League Group D loss away against Borussia Dortmund is not a big problem for the Liga giant as it remains well positioned to reach the knockout stages.

Madrid currently sits second in its section with six points from three games following Wednesday's defeat, and has a three-point lead over third-placed Ajax.

"There is no great drama because there are lot of matches left and we are still well positioned to progress," Cristiano Ronaldo stated to the official Madrid website. "We knew that it would be a difficult match against a good team that are very strong at home. That's football and the chances of winning are the same for each side when you play against a great team.

"The team did well, but Dortmund's second goal was a little bit lucky.

"We realize that away from home it is becoming increasingly difficult to get anything from matches. We knew it would be difficult because we were playing a great opponent."

Real Madrid will be looking to return to winning ways at the weekend when it takes on Mallorca.

Freiburg 0-2 Borussia Dortmund: Subotic and Gotze return champion to winning ways

    222783hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund recovered from last weekend's derby defeat to Schalke as the club overcame Freiburg 2-0 at a snowy Mage Solar Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In an extremely scrappy affair, two second-half goals, one from Neven Subotic and the other courtesy of Mario Gotze, were enough to get BVB's Bundesliga defense back on track after a dire opening period.

The wintry temperatures gave rise to a cagey start as both teams struggled to find a cohesive rhythm, with Freiburg's attack particularly hampered by the thick snow.

Nevertheless, it was the home team which threatened first. After seeing two headers blocked at the near post, Daniel Caligiuri lifted the ball into the middle and in his attempts to clear it away, Lukasz Piszczek diverted the ball towards his own net and was fortunate Marcel Schmelzer's touch guided it against the post.

Oliver Baumann had already made a relatively comfortable save from a Marco Reus free kick in the opening stages and it was another BVB set piece that called the keeper into action again, with Mats Hummels agonizingly close to diverting Schmelzer's dead-ball delivery into the net after 27 minutes.

Freiburg was giving a good account of itself against the reigning champion, but the team was guilty of failing to take its chances. Fallou Diagne was unable to keep down a free header from 10 yards out, before Julian Schuster's mazy run ended with a pull-back that no one was on hand to tap in.

Klopp clearly had some strong words for his side during the break and it began the second half in a far more aggressive manner.

After Piszczek failed to capitalize on Reus' smart pass within a minute of the restart, BVB wasted another chance in the 51st minute. Kevin Grosskreutz made his first contribution with a drive to the bye line but Gotze blazed his teammate's resulting cross over the bar.

Dortmund did not relent and finally got the reward for a bright start to the half in the 54th minute. Reus' whipped free kick was flicked on off the head of Subotic and the ball bounced in at the far post.

Freiburg could well have drawn level moments later, but Erik Jendrisek saw his eight-yard effort poked away by the onrushing Roman Weidenfeller.

The game soon returned to the scrappy, disorganized football that plagued the first half and as a result opportunities were again few and far between.

Despite that, Dortmund managed to confirm the win in the 83rd minute, as Robert Lewandowski fed Gotze, who drilled a shot past Baumann and into the bottom corner.

Victory ensures that BVB holds onto fourth position, temporarily nine points off top spot, while Freiburg drops down to 10th place.

Reading 3-3 Fulham: Robson-Kanu nets last-gasp equalizer in dramatic finale

    222794hp2.jpg

Reading played out a stunning climax, coming from behind twice in the final 10 minutes against Fulham in a thrilling Premier League encounter to earn a 3-3 draw.

The home side took the lead early on through Mikele Leigertwood, before Bryan Ruiz found an equalizer in the second half. Chris Baird looked to have given Fulham a vital lead, before Gareth McCleary added a late second for QPR.

However, the game was not done there, with Dimitar Berbatov curling home what should have been a winner. However, Hal Robson-Kanu was on hand to poke home a dramatic equalizer in an end-to-end thriller at the Madejski Stadium.

Before the match, it was all about strikers, namely former Fulham man Pavel Pogrebnyak, as he stated that he had no regrets about leaving Craven Cottage. Martin Jol said he was bothered about the decision - until he signed Manchester United man Berbatov, that is.

Both started, with former Royals man Steve Sidwell having to settle for a place on the bench.

Pogrebnyak really should have put the home team ahead in the opening 10 minutes, inexplicably heading wide from four yards out, much to the delight of the visiting support.

After 15 minutes, Berbatov had his first chance, driving a shot over from the edge of the box after a nice move from involving Kieran Richardson and Hugo Rodallega, with the latter then directing a free header straight to Alex McCarthy in the Reading goal, a real waste.

After 26 minutes, the crowd saw an absolute beauty from Reading. Jason Roberts held the ball up nicely before finding Jobi McAnuff on the left. The winger cut inside before laying the ball off invitingly for Leigertwood, who curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

In a fairly even opening 45 minutes, Fulham was arguably creating the better chances, but was far too inaccurate, with Rodallega fluffing another header, this time from six yards out as he mistimed his effort.

The Cottagers were much more impressive in the second half though, with the introduction of Ruiz proving a pivotal decision from Jol.

The Costa Rican came on for the disappointing Rodallega, adding some flair and a stunning goal straight after his introduction.

Ruiz found Damien Duff in a great position, but the winger's touch let him down a little. However, the Irishman found his teammate again on the edge of the box, who then crashed the ball in off the bar for the second great goal of the game.

In the 76th minute, Fulham looked to have taken a decisive lead. Baird had a free kick from range deflected just wide for a corner, from which he stole a lead on his man at nodded in at the near-post, before falling into the advertising hoardings.

The defender-turned-midfielder eventually left the pitch to be replaced by Sidwell, who got a good ovation considering the visiting side had just taken the lead.

What followed was a tumultuous last 10 minutes, with McCleary on as a sub, sweeping home across Schwarzer.

But the game was far from over, with Berbatov adding a great effort only three minutes from time, curling a strike into the far corner.

However, Reading came straight back and found yet another equalizer, with Hal Robson-Kanu, another substitute, poking home from close range to cap a stunning finale.

Wigan 2-1 West Ham: Ramis and McArthur volley Latics to victory

    222791hp2.jpg

Wigan earned a confident 2-1 victory over West Ham at the DW Stadium courtesy of fine volleys from Ivan Ramis and James McArthur, despite a late header from James Tomkins.

The victory was just reward for a strong display from Roberto Martinez's side, which slick movements and passing was too much for the visitors, with Jean Beausejour, Shaun Maloney and Arouna Kone tormenting the Hammers defense throughout.

The 4,000 traveling fans were left with more questions than answers as a lack of an alternate option in the wake of Ricardo Vaz Te's injury left them looking predictable.

Martinez started Franco Di Santo up on his own, with support coming from Beausejour on the left, while Andy Carroll and Kevin Noble started for the away side, with boss Sam Allardyce looking for his side to go on the offensive from the off.

Both sides started brightly, with the Hammers looking to hassle the Latics defense as early as the first minute. Andy Carroll heading an early chance over, and slammed a free kick into the wall minutes later.

While the early warning signs came from the visitors, it was Wigan which struck first, and in spectacular fashion. Beausejour won a corner in the eighth minute, and swung the ball into an unmarked Ramis, who blasted in a left-footed volley from 18 yards out. Jaaskelained was furious his defenders nowhere to be found.

Ramis then earned a booking by taking out Diame in the 18th minute, and Wigan was lucky Mark Noble wasted the 25-yard free kick.

Maloney struck a swerving effort from 30 yards that Jaaskelainen did well to parry away from danger after 20 minutes, with the Hammers defense slow to acknowledge the danger again.

West Ham created few chances after a frenetic opening, but James Collins almost turned in an effort on 36 minutes following a Noble free kick, yet the ball dribbled into Al-Habsi's hands.

During a frantic five-minute period Kone and Di Santo wasted three opportunities between them, and Carroll almost found an equalizer in injury time after heading wide from Noble's delivery.

Benayoun was replaced at the interval by Modibo Maiga, but James McArthur gave the home side a two-goal advantage two minutes into the restart. Jaaskelainen shanked a clearance to concede possession, and the ball was worked in from the left, McArthur slammed home a half volley as the Hammers again failed to pick up their men.

Wigan nullified Carroll's threat by picking up the midfield runners behind him, leaving the forward isolated. Carroll had a golden opportunity on the hour mark but couldn't control a fine cross, with the ball running away harmlessly.

Tomkins hit the bar late on for the visitors with a deflected volley and scored a fine header in the 92nd minute, but it was too little, too late.

The win leaves Wigan with eight points from nine games, and four clear of the relegation zone. West Ham slip to ninth place, but will have to be better to avoid being sucked further down the table.

Stoke City 0-0 Sunderland: Mignolet heroics ensures battle of the draw specialists ends all square

    222802hp2.jpg

Stoke and Sunderland fought out a tense 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium, in a game punctuated by several last-ditch saves from Simon Mignolet.

The Belgian had to be at his best to deny the Potters attack in a game which is unlikely to live long in the memory of those in attendance.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis kept faith with the team that ran Manchester United close at Old Trafford last week. It meant that Michael Owen continues to wait for his first start for the Potteries club.

The visitors welcomed back skipper Lee Cattermole from a three-match ban, replacing Stephane Sessegnon, who dropped to the bench. Phil Bardsley made his first appearance of the season on the bench after a long injury layoff. The Scot was the last Sunderland player apart from Steven Fletcher to score when he netted in the penultimate match of last season.

With 14 goals between them in 15 league matches this season and just one win each, this was never likely to be a high-scoring bonanza. Both sides set out with a lone striker, but the midfields cancelled each other out for long spells meaning there was little support on offer to the front men.

In a forgetful opening period, it was the home side that shaded it without looking likely to break the deadlock. The game briefly sprung into life midway through the first half when Danny Rose was booked for a reckless challenge on Michael Kightly. Black Cats keeper Mignolet kept out Adam’s fierce free kick, but he failed to get much distance on his punch and Ryan Shawcross should have done better than fire wide from 15 yards.

Shortly later, Kightly cut inside and then unleashed a curling effort from 25 yards that Carlos Cuellar had to head wide from under his own crossbar. From the resultant corner, Mignolet again had to look lively as Ryan Shawcross looked set to pounce.

It took the visitors until beyond the half-hour mark to record an effort worthy of note. A Seb Larsson free kick was met by the towering presence of Cuellar, but the Spaniard’s glancing header went narrowly wide.

Despite a sterile first half, neither side made changes at the break, but the home side was forced to make one soon after the restart when Marc Wilson went down heavily in challenge with Steven Fletcher. The Stoke defender fell awkwardly. After a lengthy stoppage, Wilson was carried from the pitch with a suspected broken leg.

The game then descended once again into a scrappy, cagey affair with neither side able to assert any authority. A succession of bookings and substitutions didn’t help the flow, though one highlight was a verbal joust between O’Neill and Shawcross on the touchline that led the Stoke skipper to receive a ticking off from referee Mark Halsey.

There were occasional glimpses of goal, though Adam Johnson’s 25-yard thunderbolt would have been out of keeping with the encounter if it had sailed between the sticks.

At the other end, Charlie Adam stumbled as he was picked out by a Geoff Cameron pass and failed to trouble Mignolet.

Sessegnon replaced the ineffectual Larsson and it nearly paid immediate dividends when he picked out Fletcher in space, but the Scot hesitated and that allowed Huth to block his effort. Sunderland claimed that the German used an arm and replays appear to back its pleas.

The game appeared to be drifting to a tame draw, but Huth nearly gave Stoke an unlikely winner when his darting header forced Mignolet into a point-blank save.

The injury to Wilson meant an additional eight minutes and much of it was spent around the Sunderland boss with Mignolet again to the rescue when saving at Crouch's feet.

Arsenal 1-0 QPR: Arteta spares Gunners’ blushes on Wilshere’s return

    222781hp2.jpg

LONDON, England -- Arsenal marked Jack Wilshere’s return to action with a nerve-jangling 1-0 victory over 10-man Queens Park Rangers secured by a late strike from Mikel Arteta.

Arteta scrambled the ball over the goalline in the 84th minute following an afternoon of toil for Arsene Wenger’s side in which they once again failed to find their attacking rhythm off the back of two defeats in the last week and a stormy AGM on Thursday in which many supporters criticised the club’s strategy.

The result, which lifts the Gunners to fourth position in the Premier League, came thanks to a helping hand from QPR defender Stephane Mbia, who was sent off in the 80th minute after foolishly kicking out at Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

QPR manager Mark Hughes will now face increasing speculation over his future as the west London club remain rock-bottom in the Premier League with three points from nine matches.

The Welshman could do with a player like Wilshere, who made his first Arsenal start since May 2010 following 17 months dogged by ankle problems. The England international looked like he had never been away, skipping past challenges and injecting some energy into the Gunners’ play in the final third.

The rest of the team, however, were visibly lacking in confidence, with its movement static and decision-making suspect.

Those nerves were almost eased in the 10th minute when Aaron Ramsey got on the end of Bacary Sagna’s excellent cross. The Welshman’s header looped towards the far post, beating QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar only to bounce off the top of the crossbar.

Cesar then had to stay alert to deny efforts from Wilshere and Olivier Giroud from outside the penalty area but the visitors would have been happy to restrict the Gunners to hopeful shots from distance.

There were few signs of improvement immediately after the break. Cesar parried away Per Mertesacker’s header following a free kick from Mikel Arteta before Cazorla lashed over the bar from 12 yards when he should have at least hit the target.

The match swung in the Gunners’ favor, though, 10 minutes from time when Mbia needlessly lashed out at Arsenal captain Vermaelen as the pair competed for the ball by the corner flag. It was hot-headed, reckless, and the visitors could have no excuses.

Cesar brilliantly kept prevented an own goal from Samba Diakite with a full-stretch save but the hosts finally beat the Brazilian six minutes from time.

Giroud’s initial header was superbly saved by Cesar but the QPR defenders failed to react, the ball finding its way to Arteta, whose initial header hit the crossbar before he poked home the rebound on the goalline.

QPR responded positively and could have leveled in the dying stages, with Esteban Granero shooting wide before substitute Jamie Mackie was denied from point-blank range by Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone in injury time.

'It's high time we won' - Mirallas desperate for Merseyside derby victory

Everton striker Kevin Mirallas will use his past experiences as he prepares for his first Merseyside derby - a game he claims it is "high time" his side won.

The Belgium striker featured in a fierce Athens derby for Olympiakos last season, when Panathinaikos fans rioted, leading to the players being escorted off the pitch, but the forward believes that type of atmosphere give derbies their edge.

The Toffees were unsuccessful in three derby clashes last season and Mirallas wants David Moyes' side to take confidence from their strong start to the season into Sunday's clash at Goodison Park.

"Of course it was frightening," Mirallas admitted to The Daily Telegraph. "But at the same time, it's also really exciting to play that type of game because if you win it’s a great achievement, and you feel great about it. Last year when we won the derby there were more than 10,000 fans waiting for us back at the club. They were very passionate and violent games at times. I think this one will be slightly different.

"However, I know the people are just as passionate in England and I’m really looking forward to it.

Mirallas then urged his teammates to continue their sparkling early-season form and capitalize against their neighbors.

"It’s high time we won this one again. We want to keep our place in the top four, and give the fans something to be really happy about, especially because we lost it last year.

"I know there was a lot of disappointment amongst the players last season, especially being so close to the FA Cup final. We don’t want a repeat of that. They have got good players as well, obviously. It is a derby, so it doesn't matter so much if a side has a weakness in those games."

Chelsea star Oscar sets 20-goal target

Chelsea midfielder Oscar has set himself a target of 20 goals for the club in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazil man has bagged three Champions League goals for the Blues, and is confident that he will find the net in the Premier League sooner rather than later.

"I have been a midfielder who is a regular goalscorer and scoring 20 in a season was normal for me," Oscar told the club's official website.

"I know it could be a bit more difficult in England because you are not playing all the time and you play in different positions. But I do expect to score many goals for Chelsea and I hope to keep the average of between 10 to 20 goals a season, that would be good."

The former Internacional star was known in his native country for long-range strikes - such as the wonder-goal he scored against Juventus last month.

"The long-distance ones are the most common goals I have scored," Oscar added. "I often try to position myself in the place I was for this last goal against Shakhtar, so that when someone passes the ball I am close enough.

"I do score quite a few like this but because my more usual position is just outside the box, that is where I score most of my goals from."

Eriksen: I want to make Ajax as much money as possible

Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen believes he can now command a much larger fee after scoring one and setting up another in the 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League.

The 20-year old Denmark international has been linked with a variety of clubs over the years, but is hoping to make the Eredivisie champion as much money as possible when he does eventually leave.

"It was my day," he told De Telegraaf. "I hope it means that I'm worth more than I was, so that Ajax can earn as much as possible. It feels good to that I can help.

"How come I have not played as well in recent weeks? I have no idea, form is something elusive. It is not guaranteed that from now on I play as well as I did, but this gives us a lot of confidence."

Ajax currently sits in third place in Group D, two points behind fourth-placed City.

Fulham boss Jol admits uncertainty over Hangeland future

Fulham manager Martin Jol has conceded he is unsure over the future of club captain Brede Hangeland, admitting the two parties have been locked in contract talks for the past six months.

The 31-year-old defender is yet to agree terms with the club he joined in 2008, meaning Jol may have to consider any bids that are made for him should they come during January's transfer window. Amid speculation that Fulham may be forced to sell a number of star players after the current campaign, Jol suggested it could only be the Norway center back who departs.

"Our culture is that we always like to keep the players we want to keep," Jol told Sky Sports. "I don't know where the story that our star players are going is coming from. Brede is the only problem, but we've been talking to him for the last five or six months. But we've made him a good offer so if he wants to stay that would be fantastic.

"So believe me, there isn't a situation where a lot of my best players would go. [Dimitar] Berbatov has two years, [Mladen] Petric one year and an option, so that is fine and [Hugo] Rodallega was a free transfer. [Sascha] Riether has an option."

During preseason, the revolving door at Fulham was in full motion, with key men such as Clint Dempsey, Mousa Dembele and Danny Murphy all leaving the club.

"We always want to improve and don't tell anybody else, but I believe that's what we did in the transfer window," Jol added. "With Dembele it was different, he left three days before the transfer window closed after promising he'd stay. We spoke to Clint 18 months before his contract expired, but he wanted to go to a Champions League club."

Arsenal striker Gervinho warming to new center forward role

Arsenal winger Gervinho has expressed his delight with his new-found role up front.

The Ivory Coast international is the Gunners’ top scorer this season with five goals, and he believes his recent form is purely down to his shift into the center of Arsenal’s attack.

“In the middle, it gives you lots of options,” he told the official Arsenal magazine. “You can make a run on the right, on the left, deep in the center. It’s a big advantage. I feel good there and I am working hard to improve in that position.

“I don’t have the physical ability to play in the air or to hold the ball up, so I am learning how I can make the best of my qualities for that position. I am working very hard at training to improve my efficiency, to be more clinical in front of goal. It has been my flaw so far. I know I still have a lot more to learn but I am more confident now - the start of the season and my goals so far have showed that I have improved a lot.”

Despite acknowledging his own efforts this season, Gervinho believes it will count for nothing unless the team are successful at as a unit.

"I will be happy with my season only if the team does well and wins things," Gervinho said. “I don’t mind about my own stats, goals or assists. I want to help the team to have a great season. I will give everything and never give up.”

The Ivorian also talked up the importance of Arsene Wenger’s management style, hailing his relationship with the French coach.

“He has been very important," Gervinho said. "He talks to me a lot, he tells me what I did right and wrong and what I should do better in the next game. It’s very important to have a relationship like that with your manager.”

Santos denies Neymar to Barcelona rumours

    213858hp2.jpg

Santos has moved to deny rumours that Neymar could be on his way to Barcelona as early as next summer.

Reports had circulated that the Blaugrana had paid an initial 10 million euros for an unnamed player - whom fans believed to be the young South American - who would move to Camp Nou at the season's end.

However, the Sao Paulo giant has now ruled out a sale of the Brazil international before 2014, when his current deal at the club expires.

"Santos reject any possibility of selling Neymar to Barcelona or any other team," a statement on the club's official website read. "There are no negotiations under way, and the club reiterate that the attacker has a contract until 2014, which he will see out until the end."

The 20-year-old has won 25 caps for his country, scoring 16 times in the process.
