Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United: Van Persie decides derby day in thrilling fashion

    237796hp2.jpg

Robin van Persie’s injury-time free kick inspired Manchester United to a 3-2 win over Manchester City in a barnstorming derby. Wayne Rooney had put United two goals up after 28 minutes as United counterattacked in clinical fashion.

But Yaya Toure pulled one back for City to set up a thrilling last half hour, and Pablo Zabaleta sent the home support wild in the 86th minute when he made his club's relentless pressure count by shooting through a crowded goalmouth.

However, it was Van Persie, the player City tried to sign in the summer, who had the final say in a magnificent game with a deflected 25-yard free kick that nestled in the bottom corner.

United’s landmark victory in the biggest domestic match of the season so far condemned City to its first defeat at Etihad Stadium for nearly two years.

In a match that typified the passion, entertainment and commitment of the Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson’s team will feel that justice was done, given that Toure’s strike came 60 seconds after Ashley Young had a goal disallowed for offside even though he appeared to be level.

United has now claimed four big scalps in the opening 16 matches of the season, having already won at Liverpool and Chelsea and beaten Arsenal at home.

With Hollywood royalty Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall watching on, Mancini sprung a surprise by opting to pair Sergio Aguero with Mario Balotelli rather than Carlos Tevez.

For United, David De Gea got the nod to start in goal, Tom Cleverley was chosen to partner Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia returned after three weeks on the sidelines.

City completely dominated the early exchanges but after Balotelli and Aguero had wasted good opportunities, Rooney’s classic sucker-punch goal put the visiting side 1-0 up.

A brilliant Van Persie chest down on the halfway line allowed Young to gallop down the left flank, from where he found Rooney in space on the edge of the box. The forward’s shot was poorly hit but it caught out an unmoved Joe Hart in goal, dribbling into the corner of the net.

The home fans were momentarily stunned, and there was another blow when skipper and defensive leader Vincent Kompany hobbled off after 20 minutes with what appeared to be a groin injury.

Curiously, Kompany was replaced not by Joleon Lescott but Kolo Toure, who was not deemed good enough to be selected for City’s Champions League squad.

Toure looked a nervous wreck every time the play was in his general direction and United soon took full advantage of City’s reshuffle.

After 28 minutes, Cleverley won an important tackle in midfield and David Silva failed to track Rooney’s central run. The striker greedily gobbled up Rafael’s cross from the right flank to unerringly side-foot his 150th league goal.

By the time the opening period ended, the home support had been quietened, City was running out of ideas and United looked in control.

Mancini waited until six minutes into the second half to replace the disappointing Balotelli with Tevez, by which time the visiting team had also been forced into a change with Chris Smalling taking the place of the injured Jonny Evans.

City got a foothold in the match at the hour mark, 60 seconds after Young had a goal ruled out for offside even though replays suggested he was level when he pounced on the re-bound from a van Persie shot that cannoned off the post.

A single City attack produced three saves from De Gea before Tevez teed up Yaya Toure to light the sky blue flare and put the home side back in the match.

With the two sides trading some breath-taking attacks, Silva was inches from equalizing after 78 minutes when his shot skimmed De Gea’s shoulder before whacking the crossbar.

By now, City was pouring forward relentlessly. In a late piece of drama that is increasingly typical of Mancini’s team, Zabaleta appeared to have secured the draw with his first goal of the season.
But van Persie had the final say on a remarkable afternoon.

Arsenal 2-0 West Brom: Arteta double eases the pressure on Wenger

    237536hp2.jpg

Arsenal secured its first win in five matches by beating West Brom2-0 at the Emirates, dampening the visitors’ hopes of a top-six finish.

It was a tale of two controversial penalties in north London, with both dispatched in similar fashion by Mikel Arteta. In the first instance, Mike Jones pointed to the spot after Santi Cazorla cut inside Steven Reid and threw himself to the floor, although replays showed that no contact was made.

The second penalty was correctly awarded for a foul on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain by Chris Brunt, but the Baggies will again feel aggrieved as it appeared that the Gunners’ winger pushed Goran Popov to the ground just moments before the decision.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Swansea last weekend, as Bacary Sagna, Olivier Giroud and Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced Carl Jenkinson, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott.

The opening exchanges were hotly contested, with both sides keen to avoid going behind early on. But it was Arsenal who went the closest to taking the lead, as Gervinho spurned an early opportunity 18 yards from goal and Cazorla fired wide from just outside the penalty area.

Cazorla then went close again, as Oxlade-Chamberlain raced down the right before hooking a cross deep into the box.

The ball sat up nicely for the Spaniard to volley towards goal, but Steven Reid pressured him into smashing his shot over the bar.

The visitors then had a chance of their own, as Brunt attempted the audacious.

The winger attempted to curl a first time shot into Wojciech Szczesny’s top corner, but was unlucky to narrowly miss the target.

The deadlock was eventually broken courtesy of an Arteta penalty. Cazorla cut into the box from the left, before dipping inside Reid and going down theatrically.

Replays show that there was no contact from the right back, but Mike Jones pointed to the spot and Arteta rifled the ball past Boaz Myhill.

The Gunners were inches away from doubling their lead, as Gervinho embarked upon a mazy run into the area before drilling the ball across the six-yard box.

Jack Wilshere slid in an attempt to make contact, but in spite of an open net gaping in front of him the 20-year-old could only manage to poke the ball wide.

The hosts started the second half the better side, keeping relentless pressure on the Baggies’ goal. Oxlade-Chamberlain was unlucky not to score with a chance from a narrow angle, while Gervinho passed up a glorious opportunity with an air shot from six yards out.

Arsenal then made it two, as the referee awarded a second penalty for a clear foul by Brunt on Oxlade-Chamberlain.

However, the decision was not without controversy, as the Gunners’ winger appeared to push Popov to the ground in the play leading up to the foul. Arteta stepped up once again and smashed the ball straight down the middle.

    Congratulations Manchester United!!!

:love:Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United:Manchester United's Robin van Persie wins derby thriller over Manchester City

    vanpersiemanchesterderbyceleb_576x324.jpg

Robin van Persie's deflected injury-time free-kick gave Manchester United an incredibly dramatic 3-2 derby win over Manchester City and struck a major marker in the Premier League title race.

Wayne Rooney's two first-half goals had looked set to give United a comfortable victory before City hit back through Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta in an engrossing encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

    article-2245427-166DC59B000005DC-391_634x442.jpg

But, in stoppage time, the late free-kick from Van Persie, who had been wanted by City before he joined United in the summer, flicked off Samir Nasri in the wall and condemned the defending champions to their first home defeat in the top flight in two years.

The thrilling goal, for which Nasri's defending was poor, was marred by unpleasant scenes as celebrating United centre-back Rio Ferdinand was struck by an object seemingly thrown from City fans.Greater Manchester Police also confirmed a man was arrested inside the stadium on Sunday on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence after officers heard racist chanting.

    article-2245427-166DA308000005DC-909_634x426.jpg

On the field, a United win in part avenged their double derby losses last season and Holland international Van Persie's late strike also moved Sir Alex Ferguson's team six points clear at the top of the table.

It had been a typically adrenalin-fuelled opening five minutes, with neither set of players pulling out of tackles amid a fierce and fiery atmosphere but City began to dominate possession in the early stages.

However, against the run of play, Sir Alex Ferguson's United took the lead in the 16th minute as Rooney's tame finish from just inside the penalty area left Joe Hart wrong-footed and concluded a slick counter-attack.Roberto Mancini's team were stunned, lost their momentum and suffered a further setback in the 21st minute when a groin injury meant captain Vincent Kompany had to be substituted and replaced by Kolo Toure.

    article-2245427-166DE6A8000005DC-613_634x391.jpg

City became ragged and were duly punished in the 29th minute when Rooney doubled United's advantage from Rafael da Silva's low, right-side cross to net his 150th Premier League goal.

Shortly after half-time, United were themselves forced into a defensive change when centre-back Jonny Evans, who had sustained an injury before the interval, had to be replaced by Chris Smalling.Mancini's patience with the ineffective Mario Balotelli, surprisingly selected in the first XI, ran out soon after and the reported AC Milan transfer target stormed down the tunnel having been swapped for former United striker Carlos Tevez.

In contrast to last season's encounter, when United and Ferguson were strongly criticised for their negative tactics, the game continued in a far from cagey style and Ashley Young saw an effort disallowed for a controversial offside decision after Van Persie had hit a post.

To underline United's frustration at the ruling, City moved straight up the other end of the pitch to pull a 60th-minute goal back as Yaya Toure kept his composure after goalkeeper David de Gea had produced an excellent double save from David Silva.

The goal set up a frenzied final half-an-hour of end-to-end football and City got the equaliser their second-half performance deserved when United's deficiencies at set-pieces were again exposed as Zabaleta's 86th-minute half-volley at a corner flew into the back of the net.

There was, however, to be another twist as Van Persie struck deep into stoppage time with a curling free-kick which clipped Nasri's bizarrely dangling leg to give Hart no chance.

Torino 2-4 AC Milan: Rossoneri fight back to win thriller

    237805hp2.jpg

Milan turned on the style as the club came from behind to beat Torino 4-2 at Stadio Olimpico thanks to a potent display from their front line.

Goals from the attacking trio of Robinho, Stephen El Shaawary and Giampaolo Pazzini helped the Rossoneri cancel out Mario Santana's opener as they continued their resurgent form in Serie A.

The home side came close to scoring with its inaugural attack of the match when Santana was given room to take aim at Marco Amelia's goal, the Argentine rasping his effort just wide of the post.

Milan began to find its feet after the early scare and amassed a number of decent chances before falling behind.

Only an important block from Angelo Ogbonna prevented Ignazio Abate’s low center from picking out Pazzini, while Antonio Nocerino fired wide from outside the area and Pazzini also had a header clear the crossbar. The visiting side's best chance to open the scoring fell to the in-form El Shaawary but he couldn’t hit the target when Pazzini cut the ball back for him inside the area.

Milan was made to pay for its profligacy and a mistake by Antonio Nocerino gifted Torino the lead on 28 minutes. The Milan midfielder attempted to play the ball back to his defense but could only watch on in horror as his loose pass was seized upon by Santana, who was given the freedom of the Rossoneri’s half as he bore down on goal and nonchalantly rounded Amelia before rolling home the opener.

Torino’s lead was short-lived however and Massimiliano Allegri’s side was able to level before the break through Robinho, who produced a moment of Brazilian flair to outsmart the Torino defense.

Mattia De Sciglio managed to get forward down the left flank once again and his pass into the box fell at the feet of the former Man City player whose irresistible dummy threw the last defender and afforded the forward the space to poke the ball into the roof of the net.

Milan took the lead shortly after the break when Nocerino atoned for his earlier mistake by nodding in from six yards.

El Shaawary worked his way into the box and chipped in an inviting ball which Jean-Francois Gillet could only parry onto the head of Nocerino who made no mistake, his relief in making up for his first half error evident in his celebration.
The visiting side strengthened its grip on the game whenPazzini added a third just after the hour mark in controversial fashion.

The former Inter man burst into the box but appeared to bundle over Salvatore Masiello as he battled to maintain possession but referee Andrea Romeo saw nothing untoward and Pazzini steadied himself before rifling past Gillet.

There were still more issues for the home team as El Shaawary grabbed a fourth to score in the seventh consecutive away match for Milan.

The striker pounced on the ball after Gillet had spilt Nocerino's harmless looking cross at his feet, rounding the grounded Belgian and slotting into an unguarded net.

Rolando Bianchi grabbed a consolation for Torino with a powerful header as he rose to meet Valter Bisa's cross but Milan saw out the remainder of the game to keep pace with the teams above it in Serie A.

Palermo 0-1 Juventus: Lichtsteiner earns three points for returning Conte

    237791hp2.jpg

Juventus extended its lead at the top of the Serie A with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Palermo.

Stephan Lichtsteiner was the hero for the Old Lady, with his goal being enough to separate the two sides on an icy cold and rainy afternoon in the Sicilian capital.

Juventus’ coach Antonio Conte returned to the bench following his three-month ban for his part in a match-fixing scandal, and he made a couple of changes to the side that overcome Shakhtar Donetsk midweek with Alessandro Matri coming in for the suspended Sebastian Giovinco while Cladui Marchusio is restored to the side in place of Paul Pogba.

The toils of Juventus’ midweek adventure to Ukraine were clearly showing as the league leaders struggled to create chances at the other end while their hosts dominated possession in the middle of the park. It took until the 30-minute mark for Juventus to fashion its first attempt on goal, and it came through midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who fired over after the ball fell to him for a corner.

Five minutes later, a better chance arrived. A deep cross from Arturo Vidal was chested down by Matri into the path of Marchisio, and Samir Ujkani could only parry into the path of Mirko Vucinic, who, with an outstretched leg, had his soft attempt rebound off the post.

The weather conditions did not improve as the players headed out for the second period, but, that did not stop Juve from continuing as they left off in the first half, as Vucinic broke forward and came agonizingly close to opening only to see his effort rolled by the post.

The game’s goal came moments later, though. Vucinic’s classy back-heeled pass found a charging Lichsteiner and the Swiss defender made no mistake from 12 yards out.

The game took on a familiar pattern following Juve’s opener, with Palermo playing on the counterattack while Juve searched and probed for a second goal. Paulo Dybala came on for the hosts and almost had an immediate impact when he sent in a whistling shot from just outside the area. Moments later it was Nicklas Bendtner who with his first touch also came to close to scoring Juve’s second and his first for his new club, but, the Dane’s effort went wide of the post.

With quarter of an hour remaining, the Sicilians' chances of getting something out of the game were made that much harder when Michel Morganella was shown his second yellow of the afternoon, leaving Gian Piero Gasperini’s side with just 10 men.

Palermo succumbed to its eighth loss of the season, while Juventus continued its march towards a second successive Scudetto with its third win on the trot in all competitions.

Valladolid 2-3 Real Madrid: Awesome Ozil spares Blancos' blushes

    237627hp2.jpg

Real Madrid twice came from behind to emerge as a 3-2 winner over an impressive Valladolid side at the Jose Zorilla stadium.

Some sloppy defending typified the early exchanges as after Manucho put the home side ahead early on, but Karim Benzema leveled just five minutes later. Manucho added his second from a corner in the 22nd minute but one goal either side of halftime from Mesut Ozil guided the desperate champion to a much-needed victory.

Madrid has been poor on the road so far this season and it seemed as though the club's woes would continue as some awful marking from a corner enabled the home side to take a seventh-minute lead. Drawn to the ball, Sergio Ramos left Manucho free in the area and the Angolan pounced on Alvaro Rubio's pass to open the scoring.

However, Valladolid soon became the culprit of some dire defending as Jose Callejon latched onto a short back pass from Omar Ramos. Combined with a slip from Marc Valiente the Madrid man was able to lay the ball on for Benzema to slot in a simple equalizer.

Los Merengues had responded well to going behind but their good work was undone at the midway point. Patrick Ebert's corner was met by Manucho who out-jumped Ramos at the near post to head his side back into the lead.

Callejon missed a chance to draw level immediately after as his poorly-struck lob dropped wide of the goal and on the half hour mark it was Ronaldo's turn. The Portuguese sent a venomous strike at Dani Hernandez's goal but he turned it behind with a strong hand.

But the persistence finally paid off on the stroke of halftime as Ozil found Benzema after a mazy run in from the left. The striker held the ball before rolling it back to the German and his effort squeezed under Dani and into the net.

Jose Mourinho took young left back Nacho off at halftime but in introducing Angel di Maria, the Portuguese subsequently moved Callejon back into the defense.

Despite it being a clear signal of intent from the visitors, Valladolid was unperturbed and a powerful strike from Oscar was unconvincingly kept out by Iker Casillas in the 60th minute.

Mourinho was once more spurred into action and two minutes later he replaced Alvaro Arbeloa with Luka Modric, moving Alonso back into the defense.

It seemed to galvanize his side and los Blancos' gambles finally paid off with 18 minutes remaining. A cheap free kick was given away by Henrique Sereno and Ozil took a short run up before bending a majestic effort towards the top corner which crashed in off the bar.

Dani made another great stop in the closing stages to keep out Ramos but ultimately Valladolid's run of five games without defeat at home came to an end, with Mourinho's men moving to within two points of second-placed city rival Atletico Madrid in the process.

Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 Evian: Ibrahimovic the inspiration as les Parisiens run riot

    237566hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain returned to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a comfortable 4-0 triumph over Evian at the Parc des Princes.

Les Roses had clearly come with a pragmatic approach in mind but it failed to pay dividends as PSG scored two goals in three first-half minutes, one from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the other courtesy of Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Pascal Dupraz's side gave a better account of itself after the break but goals from Thiago Motta and Kevin Gameiro ensured les Parisiens took all three points.

Evian immediately set out to frustrate its opponent, placing a bank of players in defense when not in possession. It limited the space for PSG but also meant the club enjoyed the vast majority of possession.

Yet the numbers were unable to contain Ibrahimovic who went close twice in the opening 20 minutes. The first chance was a clever flick from Javier Pastore's pass that dropped narrowly wide, the second a header free volley that really ought to have nestled in the back of the net.

It proved just to be a sign of things to come though and in the 28th minute Ibrahimovic supplied the breakthrough. Pastore, who had been pulling all the strings, set Jallet on his way to the by line with an exquisite flick and the fullback's cross was knocked home by the Swede.

Three minutes later the advantage was doubled as the former AC Milan striker used his strength to hold off two defenders and control a long pass from Menez on his chest. Lavezzi picked up the ball and showed great composure to take a touch and pick place his shot in off the post.

Some truly sumptuous football around the edge of the area involving Jeremy Menez, Pastore and Lavezzi created a chance for the Argentine to net his second of the night. However, he sent a header from his compatriot's cross straight down the middle of the goal and Laquait tipped it over.

There were two changes for les Roses at halftime and that seemed to improve things for them. The ball was no longer completely retained by PSG and a higher line stopped the dominant side from threading too many passes together.

But the home team still proved deadly on the break, particularly in the 65th minute when Lavezzi released Pastore down the right. His cross found Ibrahimovic in the middle but he was denied as an awful connection saw the ball loop up off his shin and come back off the post.

Although Evian had improved after the restart les Parisiens still dominated and after Motta slotted home from Pastore's cross in the 84th minute, Gameiro added the gloss to the scoreline two minutes later as he tapped following some superb interplay between Ibrahimovic and Menez.

Victory sends PSG up to second in the table on goal difference, while Evian could fall into the relegation zone this weekend should results go against the club.

Arsenal boss Wenger denies any contact from PSG

    223783hp2.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists he has not been contacted by Paris St-Germain about joining the club, as stories in France suggest the club's owners are losing patience with current manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The Paris-based team spent lavishly in the summer transfer window to bring in stars such as Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic but trails Ligue 1 leader Lyon by two points having played a game more. While rumors persist that the club's Qatari owners are keen to replace the Italian boss with Jose Mourinho or Wenger, the Gunners' manager states that he has not been in touch with PSG and that the club must stick with Ancelotti.

"They haven't contacted me, and I think they must support Ancelotti," Wenger told French TV station TF1. "When a club is surrounded by rumors, it's because they are not strong enough and aren't in control of things."

PSG won 4-0 against Evian on Saturday and qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League top of its group, but has lost to Nice, Rennes and Saint-Etienne since November and only has two wins from six league games.

Wenger, who famously insists he will never break a contract, is under contract with the Gunners until 2014 - but currently also under pressure himself as Arsenal have made a poor start to the season; however, a 2-0 win against West Brom on Saturday eased concerns and saw the North London side rise to sixth in the Premier League table.

Sahin wishes to play a deeper midfield role instead of advanced position

    234312hp2.jpg

Nuri Sahin says that he is being played in the wrong position for Liverpool, opining that he would prefer to play in a holding midfield position for the Premier League side instead of a more attack-minded role.

The 24-year-old Turkey international moved to Anfield on loan from Real Madrid in the summer and has been playing behind Luis Suarez as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to support a depleted attacking line. The midfielder stated that he is not as comfortable playing in such as advanced position, though, and would like to occupy a similar role to that in which he impressed for Borussia Dortmund between 2005 and 2011.

"I've played my whole career deeper but I have played as a No. 10 here. It was new for me but I tried my best," Sahin told reporters. "If I could choose a position it would be holding as I feel more comfortable there."

Sahin, who has made seven Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season but has missed the last four league games through injury, was back in the team as his side beat Udinese 1-0 in the Europa League - although had to go off injured after just 12 minutes.

The Reds have struggled for form this season and are currently in 12th position in the Premier League, but a win against West Ham on Sunday afternoon would send Rodgers' side above the Hammers into the top half.

Scholes is the best midfielder of the last 20 years, Xavi says

Xavi has spoken of his great admiration for Manchester United's Paul Scholes, describing the midfielder as "spectacular" and the best of his generation.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the Barcelona legend spoke of his reverence for Scholes and suggested that the cultural differences between England and Spain meant that he would have been more highly regarded in La Liga.

"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen - the most complete - is Scholes," Xavi said. "I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything.

"He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn't give possession away. If he had been Spanish, then maybe he would have been valued more."

Xavi, who has played over 400 times for the Blaugrana and been awarded third place in the Ballon d'Or on each of the previous three occasions, stressed that he meant no disrespect towards the style of English football."England are a nation of warriors," he added. "If I go to Liverpool’s ground and someone puts the ball into the area and Carragher hammers it out of play then the fans applaud. In the Nou Camp you would never be applauded for that.

"It’s a different culture that values different things. Here if they see you are afraid when you are in possession then you get whistled. It’s the world in reverse."Xavi has scored three times in 14 La Liga appearances this campaign as Barcelona sits at the top of the table, six points clear of Atletico Madrid.

Betis 1-2 Barcelona: Messi makes history

Lionel Messi became the player to score the most goals in a calender year after hisdouble led Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Betis in their Liga clash at at Estadio Benito Villamarin on Sunday.

The Argentine etched his name in football history with his 85th and 86th goals for club and country in 2012, breaking the 40-year-old record of 85 set by Gerd Muller in 1972, while he also surpassed Cesar Rodriguez as the all-time league goalscorer for the Blaugrana with his 192nd Liga goal.

Messi's brace put Barcelona two goals up after 25 minutes, but it was far from smooth sailing for the Catalans, who were given a thorough examination by a spirited home side that pulled a goal back through Ruben Castro shortly before the break.

The attacking pressure from Betis saw the team create a number of opportunities in the second half, hitting the woodwork twice, but Barca managed to ride its luck and grind out the victory, which gives the team its 14th win in 15 league games, and restores a six-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of the table.

Messi shook off a knee injury sustained during the 0-0 draw against Benfica midweek to start in a much-changed side from Tito Villanova, who retained only two players from his XI against the Portuguese outfit.
Betis fired an early warning shot with just over two minutes on the clock, after a good moment in possession from Joel Campbell saw him pick out Salva Sevilla inside the area, but his header was placed too close to Victor Valdes.
Barca was handed a blow after 10 minutes, as Cesc Fabregas, who appeared to be struggling, was withdrawn, with Alexis Sanchez coming on in his stead.
But the visiting side did not break stride, and with just over a quarter of an hour gone, a driving run from Messi saw him past multiple defenders on his way into the area, where he finished calmly into the bottom corner to equal Muller’s record.
Betis nearly conceded again within moments of the restart, but were thankful to goalkeeper Adrian for holding his nerve to tip a clever lob from Andres Iniesta over the crossbar.
The resistance would not last long though, and when a one-two saw Iniesta tee up Messi inside the area with a delightful back heel, the Argentine’s finish for his 86th goal in 2012, and his place in the footballing pantheon, was inevitable.
Adrian was called into action again to deny Xavi from 20 yards out, but just when it seemed like Barca was set to run away with the game, Betis managed to pull a goal back shortly before halftime.
The Blaugrana’s defense was nowhere as organized as the attack, as Jordi Alba failed to read the offside trap set by the rest of the back line, allowing Castro in behind to slot comfortably past Valdes.
Pepe Mel’s team was the superior side to start the second half, and behind an ever-raucous crowd, controlled possession and created chances as it pressed forward at the Barca goal.

Valdes nearly gifted Betis an equalizer shortly after the interval after spilling a harmless cross from Sevilla, before recovering just in time to claw the ball around the post ahead of the onrushing Castro.

With 20 minutes remaining, a wayward defensive header from Javier Mascherano off a Betis corner saw the ball rebound off the inside of the post and into the grateful arms of Valdes.

Matters were whipped into a frenzy with a flurry of chances during the closing stages. First, Pedro was slipped into space by Sanchez, but he could not direct his finish home as Adrian was able to block.

Pozuelo then crashed a 20-yard half-volley off the woodwork, a let off which was soon matched by Barca as Messi blasted a shot on the turn onto the post, before Alba directed the rebound onto the crossbar from point blank range.

Thiago blasted a shot into orbit from eight yards out as somehow the scoreline remained intact. The final whistle signaled three points to the Catalans, bringing an end to an enthralling game of football.

Atletico Madrid 6-0 Deportivo: Five-star Falcao shines against Galicians

    237888hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid recovered from two consecutive setbacks in convincing fashion after the club hammered Deportivo La Coruna 6-0 in La Liga on Sunday.

However, the team's cause was greatly helped by the exploits of Radamel Falcao, who struck the net five times at the Vicente Calderon to become only the second player to score as many goals in a Spanish top-flight match this century.

It was Diego Costa who broke the deadlock on the night. The Brazilian striker made amends for his midweek red card in the Europa League by heading in Koke's 13th-minute corner.

The midfielder was on the assist trail again 15 minutes later when he sent Falcao through on goal, and the former Porto ace doubled Atleti's lead with a cool finish.

On the cusp of halftime, Falcao made it 3-0 to the home side, turning in a throw-in to put his team firmly in the driving seat of the match with the second half still to play.

It only went from bad to worse for Depor after the restart, as Roderick's mistake in the box allowed Falcao to complete his hat trick from the penalty spot.

Three minutes later, the striker was at again, this time finding himself at the right time to sweep up a rebound, and he netted his fifth and final goal soon after with a fine solo effort.
