Malaga 3-2 Real Madrid: Casillas dropped as beleaguered Blancos succumb to Santa Cruz double

    241754hp2.jpg

Real Madrid's Liga woes continued after falling to a 3-2 defeat against Malaga in a thrilling clash at La Rosaleda on Saturday.

Roque Santa Cruz was the match winner off the bench for the home side, scoring twice in the second half to heap more pressure on Jose Mourinho, who now sees his team fall 16 points behind league leader Barcelona.

Isco fired Malaga into a deserved lead four minutes into the second half, but a scramble in the box saw Madrid draw level in the 69th minute through a Sergio Sanchez own goal.

But Santa Cruz would make the difference for the Andalusians, scoring twice in three minutes from a pair of Joaquin assists to put los Blancos to the sword, rendering Karim Benzema's 82nd minute strike nothing but mere consolation.

Third-placed Madrid now sees its title hopes all but disappear, and must now cast wary glances over its shoulders as Malaga, with the victory, moves two points behind the capital outfit.

Mourinho surprised everyone by dropping captain Iker Casillas to the bench, giving Antonio Adan the unlikeliest of starts between the posts for the Spanish champions. But it was Malaga keeper Wily Caballero who was called into action first, the Argentine showing excellent reflexes to thwart Cristiano Ronaldo’s free kick from 30 yards out only a few minutes into the game.

The match proceeded at a frantic pace, with both teams not shying away from contact in midfield, though the best chances would continue to fall Madrid’s way throughout the first half.

The capital outfit should have been ahead with 24 minutes on the clock, but Ronaldo, after slipping in Angel Di Maria on the right, blasted the return ball over the bar from a gilt-edged position at the far post. The pair would combine again almost immediately on a scintillating Madrid break. From the left flank, the Portuguese played in Di Maria between the center backs with a fantastic pass, but the winger’s clever dink over Caballero was hacked off the line by Nacho Monreal.

Halftime was a welcome respite for Malaga, which was forced increasingly onto the ropes coming up to the interval. But it emerged from the break firing on all cylinders, and four minutes after the restart, stormed into the lead.

Joaquin did well to manufacture space on the left flank and pick out Isco just inside the area, and the 20-year-old took one touch before finishing superbly into the bottom corner across the body of Adan.

Malaga was creating all the danger in the second half, and Joaquin fired just wide after an inspired run down the wing, before Javier Saviola brushed the frame of the goal with an attempt from the edge of the box.But Madrid rode its luck at both ends of the pitch, and found a way back into the match with 21 minutes remaining. Ronaldo’s cross to the far post sparked an almighty scramble, which ended when Sanchez’s outstretched leg sent the ball trickling past the wrong-footed Caballero.

The Malaga defender would atone for his mishap within moments of the restart though, as he threw himself at Mesut Ozil, who was primed to score from point blank range after a marauding run.

And in the 73rd minute, the home side would be back in front, as a low cross from Gamez was flicked by Joaquin into the path of Santa Cruz, who tapped into an empty net at the far post.Within minutes, Malaga was 3-1 ahead, with Joaquin again pulling the strings in attack. The winger played in Santa Cruz with a lovely reverse pass, and the substitute’s finish into the bottom corner was equally sublime.

But just when the hosts looked assured of victory, Ozil picked out Benzema on the counter, and the Frenchman finished calmly to mark a nervy end to the game with eight minutes remaining.

There was nothing left from Madrid though, as Malga defended superbly in the time that remained to clinch a priceless scalp, and move to within two points of third place.

Swansea 1-1 Manchester United: Michu pounces to deny United a sixth straight win

    241881hp2.jpg

Manchester United has failed to restore its six-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after being held to a 1-1 draw against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

The league leader opened the scoring through Patrice Evra in the first half, with the France international heading in a corner, but Swansea soon equalized. After good work from Wayne Routledge and Jonathan De Guzman, Michu tapped in to level the scoring and the club held on for a point, despite United dominating the second half and hitting the bar twice.

The home team made just the two changes from the side which lost to Tottenham in the club's last fixture, as Michel Vorm and Kemy Agustien came in for Gerhard Tremmel and Ki Sung-Yong.

Sir Alex Ferguson also made two changes for the trip to Swansea, both coming at the heart of the defense with Rio Ferdinand and Chris Smalling dropping out of the team for Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans. The match had been built up as a face off between the Premier League’s two top scorers Robin van Persie and Michu, and the Spaniard was the first to get through on goal as he broke away from Jonny Evans inside the first 10 minutes, but his wild effort went well wide.

United, however, soon had the lead as van Persie whipped in an inviting corner from the right and Patrice Evra rose to bag his third goal of the season, diverting the delivery into the far side of the net. Both sides continued to create chances, but it was Swansea which grabbed the next goal as Jonathan De Guzman fired at David De Gea after a clever Wayne Routledge pass into the area, only for Michu to tap in for his 13th league goal of the season.

Michu’s goal proved a massive confidence boost as the home side began to press for a second. After some rather awful defending by Tom Cleverley, De Guzman stole the ball before shooting, but De Gea managed to catch his effort at the near post.

United created a few attacks late on in the half, but with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young both having poor matches, supply from the flanks was terrible and the two teams went into the break level.United began the second half in improved fashion, but Routledge was soon causing trouble again as he produced one step over before shooting straight at De Gea, while Young had an effort blocked at the other end within seconds.

United took control of the midfield around the hour mark, but with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Young looking well off the pace, supply to van Persie and substitute Javier Hernandez was dreadful.

However, Rooney soon produced one excellent to delivery, but the crossbar came to Vorm’s rescue after van Persie’s flick. The Dutchman soon set up Michael Carrick for a chance of his own, but the midfielder’s header came back off the woodwork too, seconds after the disappointing Rooney was hooked for Ryan Giggs.

Sir Alex's men had their host under significant pressure for the final minutes, but with the final ball lacking, Swansea held on for a very commendable point, the club's first ever Premier League point against Manchester United.

Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa: Blues run wild in return to league play
    241914hp2.jpg

Chelsea made a perfect return to league play following its FIFA Club World Cup disappointment with a sensational 8-0 home win over Aston Villa to move back into the Premier League top four.

Fernando Torres gave Rafael Benitez’s men a flying start with a stunning third-minute header before a David Luiz free kick and Branislav Ivanovic header made sure the points were safe before halftime.

Two goals from Ramirez and strikes from Frank Lampard, Oscar and Eden Hazard completed the emphatic scoreline after the break as the Blues matched their best-ever Premier League result to move up to third in the table.

The biggest roar of the day as Chelsea brushed away a feeble Villa side was reserved for Lampard, who celebrated his 500th Premier League start with a wonderful goal struck from 30 yards out in the 59th minute.

The midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the Chelsea crowd made their feelings clear to owner Roman Abramovich, singing ‘sign him up’ after Lampard overtook Bobby Tambling's club record of 129 league goals.

Chelsea got off the mark with Torres' header, which came off a whipped-in cross from right back Cesar Azpilcueta for his seventh league goal of the campaign.

The goal immediately settled any nerves around the stadium, and in the 29th minute the Blues were given a two-goal cushion. Villa defender Chris Herd brought down Hazard 25 yards from goal and Luiz stepped up to slam an unstoppable, dipping free kick over the wall and into the top corner from 25 yards.

Six minutes later, the result was put beyond doubt as the Villa defense fell asleep from a corner. Gary Cahill was allowed to turn and shoot in the box, and after a brilliant save from Brad Guzan, Ivanovic was quickest to react as he nodded home a simple header.

The Blues continued to press after the break and could have scored far more were it not for heroics from Guzan in the Chelsea goal, with the Villa keeper denying Juan Mata and Victor Moses with superb saves.

He could do nothing, however, about Chelsea’s fourth in the 59th minute. It was classic Lampard, a drilled half-volley from 30 yards that skipped off the turf and planted in the bottom corner of the Villa net. At the other end, Petr Cech was a virtual spectator in the Chelsea goal but kept his concentration to divert Andreas Weimann’s shot on to the crossbar.

Chelsea’s pressure, though, was relentless. Fifteen minutes from time, substitute Lucas Piazon slipped in Ramires, who drilled his finish through Guzan’s legs.

Four minutes later, referee Phil Dowd awarded a penalty after Herd brought down Oscar in the box. The Brazilian playmaker stepped up himself to sweep the spot kick into the top corner.

Seven minutes from time, Hazard added the seventh with a sensational finish into the top corner from 10 yards.

Two minutes from time, Piazon missed the opportunity to make it eight with another penalty as his spot kick was saved by Guzan. Ramires soon added the final touch, though, with a placed finish from the edge of the box.

Adebayor: I will not risk my life to play for Togo in Africa Cup of Nations

    218996hp2.jpg

Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor will refuse to play for Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations unless the country's FA ensures it is doing all it can to keep players safe and insists his decision has nothing to do with money.

The national side suffered a horrific attack in Angola in 2010 that left three people travelling on the team bus dead, and the Spurs striker is desperate to avoid any more catastrophes. Adebayor has been accused by some of refusing to play due to unpaid bonuses, but he said that is not the case at all and that he spends his own money to make sure other members of the national squad can travel to and from games.

"I am hearing people saying I do not want to go to the African Nations Cup because of unpaid bonuses," Adebayor told The Sun. "I do not need a bonus from Togo, it is 1,000 pounds per game. I would not refuse to play for my country over money.

"Sometimes I have to take responsibility, and I have even helped pay bonuses. It is all about the organization, or lack of it. There is only a five percent chance I could go. I am not putting my life at risk."

Memories of the 2010 attack are still painful for Adebayor, and he does not feel the Togolese FA has done enough to avoid similar events from unfolding once again.

"I was on the bus in Angola when people died in front of me. I held them as they died," Adebayor said. "Even the government do not want to pay for the treatment for the people who survived. It is not right. It is a terrible situation. After we qualified for South Africa I told them we had to sort things out.

"I said we needed a good organiation otherwise I was not going. Now we are going to South Africa and nothing has changed."

The 28-year-old remembers having to wear armored protection after that fateful day in 2010, but says he is unwilling to put his life on the line again if changes are not made immediately.

"I had to leave a team bus wearing a bulletproof vest and a bulletproof helmet. People wanted me dead. I was told I was the target," Adebayor said. "I retired from international football, but people asked me to come back and use my experience, so I agreed.

"I kept telling the FA to get organized, but they have not listened. I am glad we qualified again, but I cannot risk everything."

Totti: This Roma team has no limits

    241822hp2.jpg

Francesco Totti has hailed his Roma teammates after Saturday's 4-2 victory over AC Milan, and says his side is relishing the chance to rise even high during the second half of the season.

The Giallorossi took a 4-0 lead against the visitors, with goals coming from Nicolas Burdisso, Pablo Osvaldo and two from Erik Lamela, before the Rossoneri grabbed some consolation through Giampaolo Pazzini and Bojan in the closing minutes.

Totti was delighted by the result and saw it as an indication of Roma's potential in the second half of the campaign.

"It was a great win tonight against Milan," the 36-year-old Italian told Gazzetta dello Sport. "If we play that way we have no limits. We have a great 2013 to look forward to."

Roma is currently sixth in Serie A with 32 points, 12 behind current leaders Juventus.

The Giallorossi have enjoyed an excellent conclusion to the year, having won five of their previous six league games after losing the Rome derby in mid-November, and Totti's optimism was echoed by others, including goal-scorer Burdisso.

"We started on the right foot today," said the Argentine defender. "Our goals are to continue playing to as high a level as possible. We know our strength, but we must always prove it."

Xavi: Barcelona win was for Vilanova

    159882hp2.jpg

Xavi dedicated Barcelona's 3-1 win over Valladolid to boss Tito Vilanova, who was discharged from hospital only hours before his side kicked off on Saturday.

Goals from Lionel Messi and Xavi earned the visitors a 2-0 lead before a late Javi Guerra strike gave Valldolid hope of salvaging a result. Cristian Tello sealed the victory deep into stoppage time for the unbeaten La Liga leader, though.

Barcelona players wore T-shirts before the game with "Animo Tito" written across them in tribute to the ailing coach, who underwent surgery for a relapse of a tumor in his throat, and, speaking after the game, Xavi stressed that the health of Vilanova was on everyone's minds.

"We want to dedicate the win to Tito," Xavi told reporters. "He’s not going through the best of times, but now he’s home, and that’s great news. The operation went well, and we worked hard to be able to dedicate this victory to him."

Barcelona stretched its impressive form to 16 wins from 17 La Liga fixtures this campaign with the win, and Xavi emphasised the importance of entering the winter break with another victory.

"The result consolidates our spot at the top of the table," the Blaugrana stalwart added. "We’re on a brutal run, and we want to continue on this path. We're physically strong and when we return from the break we want to continue on form."

Barcelona sits comfortably atop of the Spanish table with 49 points, nine clear of closest competitor Atletico Madrid.

We must respect Mourinho's decision, says Casillas

    241739hp2.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has refused to criticize coach Jose Mourinho after he dropped the veteran goalkeeper for Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Malaga.

The decision to drop Casillas was described by the Portuguese coach as being a "technical decision," but the moved backfired terribly as Malaga shocked Madrid to take all three points at La Rosaleda.

"I'm not used to this, but before Casillas comes the team and this is not another speech," Casillas told Spanish TV station La Sexta. "The coach decides who plays. I have to keep training more with this healthy competition with Adan.

"Mourinho didn't say anything to me, he didn't explain anything. He doesn't give me explanations for when I do play, so then, neither when I don't.

"My teammates have all given me their support, just like we've all given our support to Antonio (Adan). Our results have not been so favorable, but the fact the two of us received the support of the dressing room is testament to the fact we all get along."

The news did not come as a shock to the 31-year-old though, as he had suspected during the week that such a decision would be made.

"During the week, I had a feeling I wasn't going to play, but it's no setback. What was important was [the result in Malaga] to cut the points difference between Barca and Atlético."

Casillas believes there is good competition between the keepers at Madrid and knows he needs to work harder to regain his place.

"I feel good and there is a healthy competition between Adan and me," Casillas said. "We must abide by the decision of the coach, and I must train a lot more to try to regain his confidence."

Former Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano believes Mourinho was trying to make a statement with his decision.

"This was a show of power; he was wielding his authority on a club legend," Valdano told Cadena SER.

Zubizarreta: Barcelona will keep Villa in January

    234620hp2.jpg

Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarreta has denied that striker David Villa will leave the club during the January transfer window.

Villa, 31, has struggled to regain his place in the Barcelona team after returning from a broken leg that saw him miss six months of last season, and he has been linked with a move away from the Catalan giants in recent weeks, with Arsenal supposedly monitoring the Spanish international’s situation.

Zubizarreta ruled out a move for Villa, though, and was keen to stress he is still a key member of the Blaugrana squad.

"In January we will keep Villa,” Zubizarreta told Canal Plus. “And it is important to remember that Barcelona is a club that habitually does not accept offers for star players in January.

"David is a player that brings goals and intensity to the team. Now he has recovered from a serious injury I believe that he is offering a good level on the field.”

Villa moved to Barcelona in 2010 for 40 million euros after five successful years with Valencia. He has eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Van Persie 'could have been killed,' calls for action against Swansea's Williams

    241905hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims that Robin van Persie "could have been killed" when Ashley Williams kicked the ball into his striker's head during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Swansea City.

Ferguson called for the center back to receive a ban and slammed the "shocking performance" of referee Michael Oliver.

"Well it was a foul on Van Persie, a clear foul," the United boss fumed to Sky Sports after the game, "But then again, the referee has had one of those days and not given us anything. He had a shocking performance today. I know he is a young referee but I was disappointed with that performance. The Van Persie situation, he clearly sees the incident.

"He could have been killed. I think the FA has got to look into it - irrespective of him getting a yellow card, he should be banned for a long time, because that was one of the most dangerous things I have seen on a football pitch in a long time.

"Absolutely deliberate. The whistle had gone, the game stopped and he has done that right in front of the referee. He could really have killed the lad."

Ferguson lamented his team's performance, a game in which Michu cancelled out Patrice Evra's opener with his league-leading 13th goal.

"We've thrown two points away really. We absolutely battered them. It's unbelievable that we haven't won the match," Ferguson said. "Great performance in the second half. If I have one criticism it would be that a poor final ball at times let us down but I have no criticism of the performance. It was very good. At the start of the season we would have taken that, but today we have to look at that as a lost two points."

Wigan 0-1 Arsenal: Arteta penalty keeps Gunners in Champions League picture

    241601hp2.jpg

Mikel Arteta coolly slotted home a second-half penalty to send Arsenal third in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Wigan, which leaves Roberto Martinez's men stuck in the relegation zone for Christmas.

The Spanish midfielder sent Ali Al Habsi the wrong way from the spot on 60 minutes following Jean Beausejour's clumsy foul on Theo Walcott after neat work between the England striker and Santi Cazorla.

Wigan was the better team for long spells, but wasteful crossing from the wings and poor finishing from Aroune Kone left the Latics frustrated and winless in five league games.

Arsene Wenger gave Walcott was given his preferred starting role up front backed by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla and Lukas Podolski.

Wigan won 2-1 at the Emirates the last time the sides met and showed no fear in the first half, but it was Arsenal which had the first real chance.

Cazorla turned James McArthur easily and found Mikel Arteta in space. The Spaniard fed Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right, who forced Ali Al Habsi into a fine one-handed stop from 16 yards.

Wigan should have taken the lead after 24 minutes as Di Santo put Kone clean through on goal, but with just Wojciech Szczesny to beat, the Ivory Coast striker dragged his shot wide from eight yards.

The second half began much as the first with both teams breaking forward looking for an early goal, and Al Habsi was forced into a great stop on 48 minutes. Oxlade-Chamberlain found space on the right wing and pulled the ball back for Walcott, whose finish was close enough for the Wigan keeper to get down to and tip away well.

However, the game turned with half an hour to go as Arsenal found the breakthrough, with the danger again coming from the right.

Walcott and Cazorla's link-up play on the wing was too intricate for Beausejour, and referee Jonathan Moss blew for a penalty as the striker was felled by the defender. Arteta found the bottom left-hand corner of Al Habsi's net with his penalty kick.

Wigan kept coming though, and Kone did well to work the ball from the left before forcing a fine low stop from Szczesny with 20 minutes remaining, while Jones could only crack an effort narrowly wide two minutes later.

Mertesacker had to be alert to deny Kone late on in the area, while McArthur dragged a shot wide late in injury time as Wenger's side saw the game out for a much-needed victory.

Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa: Blues run wild in return to league play

Fifteen minutes from time, substitute Lucas Piazon slipped in Ramires, who drilled his finish through Guzan’s legs..

Swansea 1-1 Manchester United: Michu pounces to deny United a sixth straight win
