Everton 1-2 Chelsea: Lampard double fires Blues back up to third

    243056hp2.jpg

Frank Lampard gave the Chelsea hierarchy a timely reminder of his value, as the soon-to-be out of contract midfielder scored both of the visiting side's goals against Everton in a win that moved the club back into third in the Premier League.

Everton started proceedings brightly as Steven Pienaar rifled home an opener in the second minute. But Lampard arrived on cue to bring Chelsea level after a first half in which the team was largely dominated before pouncing on a loose ball in the second half to seal the points.

The game started with a traditionally high tempo at Goodison Park and it took Everton little more than a minute to open the scoring. Pienaar finished a move he started as Victor Anichebe's header from Phil Jagielka's cross rebounded back off the post and landed kindly for the South African to power home from 12 yards.

Five minutes later, Nikica Jelavic rattled the same post as his curled free kick cannoned back off the woodwork. It was a vibrant start from the home side and the team did not let up, largely thanks to the prominence of Pienaar. His back heel to Jagielka, again down the right flank, led to a Leon Osman strike from the edge of the box that was well saved by Petr Cech.

The threat of a second home goal sparked Rafa Benitez's side into life and it was Ramires' driving run at the heart of the defense that created an opening for the excellent Juan Mata, though his shot was well blocked by Tim Howard.

Mata's influence soon grew and after some intelligent link up play in the box he released Cesar Azpilicueta on the bye line, but his drilled cross evaded every defender and attacker inside the six-yard box.

The battle of the playmakers continued to swing one way and another as Pienaar responded to Mata's creativity by sending Jelavic into space on the left side of the box. His powerful low shot across goal was tipped behind by Cech.

Then came the equalizer as the subdued Fernando Torres laid the ball into Ramires inside the box. His left-footed cross found Lampard arriving at the back post and the 34-year-old made no mistake, nodding a header across Howard and into the corner of the net.

The second period saw a more threatening Chelsea attack with purpose. David Luiz, playing in midfield, saw his expertly lifted pass to Torres squandered, before the Spaniard again contrived to waste his good initial work with Mata as he strayed offside.

Despite replacing Cech with Ross Turnball at half-time, it took Everton over 15 minutes to test the backup goalkeeper as a hooked attempt at goal required the former Middlesbrough man to catch on his goal line.

And though Jelavic beat Turnball with a cute header from a Leighton Baines cross, the crossbar came to Chelsea's rescue.

This warning prompted the Blues forward and a half-cleared knockdown from Eden Hazarad found it's way to Mata who drew a good save from Howard. Lampard, though, sharp as a knife, pounced on the loose ball to drill into the net.

A series of substitutions did little to bring the Toffees back into the game and Chelsea should in truth have netted a third were it not for Sylvain Distin's superb last ditch challenge on Torres.

But Benitez has instilled a renewed determination to the European champion and the club was never in danger of relinquishing its lead, even as Jelavic missed his kick inside the six-yard box, as Chelsea recorded the first away win at Goodison Park this season.

'Moura will be an important player for PSG' - Sirigu

    149228hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu is of the opinion that Lucas Moura will be an extremely important player for the French side.

The Brazil starlet, who shone at the London 2012 Olympics as the predominantly Under-23 squad reached the final, has arrived at Les Parisiens from Sao Paulo during the winter break. The Italian shot-stopper believes that the South American attacker has the potential to be hugely influential in helping the French club succeed in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League this season.

"He will certainly be a very important player for the present and for the future because he is very young,” Sirigu told reporters in Doha on Sunday evening.
“He will definitely help us in the league and for the knock-out stage of the Champions League.”

PSG faces Valencia in the last 16 of the European competition, having topped a group ahead of second-placed Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb.
Domestically, Carlo Ancelotti’s side sits top of the Ligue 1 table ahead of title rival Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais.

Wenger: Arsenal never looked like giving up against Newcastle

    238445hp2.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has lauded his side's never-say-die attitude following Saturday's 7-3 win over Newcastle.

The Gunners surrendered the lead on three occasions at the Emirates Stadium but ran out eventual victors thanks to a late flurry of goals.

And the Frenchman underlined the difficult of continually overcoming such setbacks during a game.

"That’s the biggest thing," he told the club's official website. "We couldn’t see any sign of giving up, even at 3-3. It’s not easy, mentally. You’re 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3 and you come back again - that’s not easy.

"A win [is the most important thing]. You cannot win every game 7-3. Your team has to be capable to sometimes win 1-0. I was very pleased with our result at Wigan, because I felt we played against a good side. We had to dig deep and were quite solid defensively.

"It was a completely different game [against Newcastle]."

Having seen his side involved in several high-scoring games this term, the 63-year-old also hailed the "technical quality" of the English top flight.

"It is very different," he said. "First of all, the other teams have improved. You could see Newcastle, they go to Man United [and] they score three goals. They come here [and] they score three goals.

"The technical quality of Premier League teams has improved. It’s more difficult to stop them from playing. A team is maybe less built to stop others from playing. We are a technical side, so going forward, we always look like we can create something.

"I always said I’m confident, because I feel the team is focused, has a good spirit, and are united. Slowly we are getting there. We still have some work to do."

Redknapp: I think QPR will stay up

    239514hp2.jpg

LONDON -- QPR boss Harry Redknapp has insisted his side can avoid relegation from the Premier League despite falling eight points short of safety following Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The west Londoners were put to the sword by two early goals from Luis Suarez before Daniel Agger's header effectively ended the contest before halftime.

Although Redknapp admitted the two sides were on "a different level" throughout, he is certain the Rs can retain their top-flight status.

"I think we'll stay up still," Redknapp told reporters. "You'll all think that I'm mad, but I think we'll stay up. I only want positive people around me. I said that in the dressing room. Those that are moping around, the subs who don't play, they're not playing because they haven't been no good. If they was any good I'd be picking them. I look at miserable faces, I don't need them around me, I need people who are upbeat.

"The next couple of games are unbelievable. Chelsea away, Tottenham at home - two of the best teams in the country. Difficult games. We've got to keep going, but I still think we'll do it."

The manager went on to say that it was hard to understand why a team with the quality his has can be so thoroughly outplayed.

"It's hard. With the quality that we have everywhere. It was a difficult day," he said. "You look at the quality of their players - one club has spent nearly 200 million pounds on players and it was hard - we couldn't get near them. In the first half hour we were all over the place, they ran us ragged."

Redknapp also conceded that there are no quick fixes for the Loftus Road outfit, which has managed just one league win in 20 attempts so far this season.

"I can only get them to do what they can do. They lost the first game of the season by five. You don't go 18 games of the season without winning if you're that good, do you?" Redknapp asked. "Mark Hughes is not a bad manager, he's not an idiot. When it comes to actually what you've got here, you look at the situation, you realize that you don't go that long without winning a game. There's got to be a problem somewhere. You haven't got a magic wand. You're not going to come in and go: 'Ok lads, you lost the first 14 games, I'm going to do this and we'll start winning'.

"We've been in every game. Today was the first one we haven't been in the game. We drew the first three, then we won, then we got beaten by the odd goal twice. The late goal at Newcastle, we deserved something out of West Brom… Today, I'm afraid, their team was on a different level in all honesty."

The former Tottenham boss went on to hint at unrest in the dressing room and underlined the importance of unity.

"I know what the problems are, but I don't want to say publicly it's one or two," he said. "You have to have everyone together as a team if you want to get out of trouble. You only need one or two who don't buy into that and you have a problem."

Everton was unlucky to lose to Chelsea, claims Moyes

Everton manager David Moyes believes his team was unlucky to lose 2-1 to Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Toffees dominated the match for the first 25 minutes and took the lead through Steven Pienaar but a Frank Lampard double either side of halftime sunk the Merseyside club.

Moyes claimed he was not disappointed with his team's performance but rued the chances it missed and suggested that fortune favored the visitors.

"We're not disappointed with the way we've played because we played really well and we've run the European champions really close," Moyes told Sky Sports. "But we didn't quite have enough in the end. We had played well enough to get a second goal but had been unfortunate, having shots back off the woodwork. I thought we were a bit unlucky."

The Scot has had several issues with injuries to first team players, and admitted that the absence of the likes of Phil Neville, Darron Gibson and the suspended Marouane Fellaini hurt his side's chances.

"We tried to make what we had work the best we could today and for long periods I thought we did, we played well enough to get something from the game," he added. "We were limited today with what we had, with Phil Neville and Darron Gibson out injured and Marouane Fellaini suspended. But Nikica [Jelavic] had a great chance to make it 2-2 in what felt like the 94th minute."

The Everton boss was unable to hide his frustrations after the final whistle, when he confronted referee Howard Webb regarding his failure to award Leon Osman a free kick after it appeared the midfielder was tripped by Lampard.

"I thought it was a free kick on Leon Osman on the edge of the box in the 92nd minute by Lampard and he didn't give it," Moyes said. "But I've apologized to Howard Webb because I shouldn't do that coming off the pitch."

Nene: PSG will let me go back to Brazil

    229656hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain attacker Nene has revealed that he plans to return to his native Brazil in the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old Nene had been linked with a move to Turkish team Besiktas by some media reports, but he said that he wishes to go back to his birth country. Nene has claimed that his move has been agreed upon by PSG chief Leonardo.

"My intention is to play in Brazil - that is clear for me - I have already spoken to Leonardo and they will agree to let me go," Nene told Brazilian sports daily Lance. "My idea is to return to Brazil but I also have offers from European clubs, clubs in Sao Paulo and another country. [But] my priority is to head home."

The attacker starred in the last Ligue 1 season but has fallen out of favor under Carlo Ancelotti in recent months, with the summer signings having forced him down the PSG pecking order.

'He's a magician' - Liverpool skipper Gerrard hails Suarez after QPR rout

    234900hp2.jpg

Steven Gerrard has hailed Luis Suarez as a "magician" after the Uruguayan struck twice to help fire Liverpool to a 3-0 win over QPR on Sunday.

The former Ajax man scored both goals in the opening 20 minutes, taking advantage of some porous defending from the Hoops, before Daniel Agger headed home from a corner to complete the scoring.

"He's been brilliant for us since he came to the club," Gerrard told Sky Sports. "Week-in, week-out he shows what a top player he is. These players have only got to play against him twice a year, we've got to train against him every day. He's a magician."

The Reds had it all their own way in the first half, as QPR's midfield failed to get close to its opponents and its defense could only stand as Suarez played the ball around them, but Gerrard dismissed claims that the game was simple for his side.

"I wouldn't say it was easy, that's very disrespectful to QPR but they're having a tough time at the moment," Gerrard said. "We knew if we started well we could quiet the crowd and our football would take over, and we were probably the best we've played so far this season."

Brendan Rodgers missed the game after picking up a suspected virus that has also affected other members of the coaching staff and the Liverpool captain dedicated the win to their stricken manager.

"Yeah, it's tough [without Rodgers], there's a gap there," Gerrard said. "You can tell when Brendan's not there, he's been fantastic since he came in. He's been brilliant to the players and when we knew he wasn't going to be coming today it was important that we got the three points for him and make sure he's getting looked after at home and he'll be happy with the lads today."

Benitez avoids revealing details regarding Lampard's future

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez stayed away from making any revealing statements regarding the future of midfielder Frank Lampard, who netted two goals to help the Blues to a 2-1 victory against Everton on Sunday.

Everton took the lead in the second minute through Steven Pienaar before Lampard scored a goal either side of halftime to seal the three points for Chelsea. The 34-year-old Lampard is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January, but Benitez claims he is focused solely on keeping him fit and in form.

"My job is to keep Lampard fit," Benitez told Sky Sports. "He is under contract, fully committed and working hard, and that is it. My job is to coach the players, and keep winning games and keep my opinion."

Benitez said that the extent of the ankle injury to Petr Cech, who was substituted at halftime, is unknown, and that the goalkeeper will undergo a scan. He was replaced by Ross Turnbull, who kept a clean sheet in the second half.

Benitez refused to comment on reports suggesting that representatives from the club will meet with Newcastle striker Demba Ba in order to tie up a January transfer for the Senegal international.

When asked if he could speak regarding Ba he replied: "No, because we don't talk about this business, we had a very important game today."

Lampard remains coy on Chelsea future after Everton win

    243069hp2.jpg

Frank Lampard has refused to shed any light on his future at Chelsea after he scored two goals against Everton to lead the Blues to a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory at Goodison Park Sunday.

Returning to Chelsea's starting XI, Lampard saw his team go one goal down in the second minute on a Steven Pienaar strike before scoring a goal either side of halftime to push the Blues back into third place.

The victory marks a fourth successive Premier League win for Rafael Benitez's team, but speculation continues to surround Lampard's future, with the 34-year-old midfielder eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.

"I just hope [the New Year] brings me playing in a winning team," Lampad told Sky Sports. "I keep trying to give my best like I've always done here, and I'll continue to do so. I'm enjoying playing, I was injured for a while, and I know there's a lot of speculation and talk but for me, it's all about the 90 minutes there."

He added to the BBC: "We haven't been talking [about a new contract] in the last couple of weeks and I'm just concentrating on playing. Playing games gives me enough satisfaction, then what will be, will be."

Lampard reserved praise for the Blues supporters, who urged Benitez to "sign him up" - in reference to his expiring contract - during Sunday's clash on Merseyside.

"They've been amazing and they are the club," Lampard said. "From the minute I came here, I've said it a million times. They've been behind me, and I've always got Chelsea in me for life. They back their team, and they back all the players in the team at every match, so I can't thank the club enough."

The two goals Lampard scored put him just one goal behind the club's second all-time top goalscorer, Kerry Dixon, and they also handed Everton its first loss at home this season.

"It was a huge, huge [effort], especially after the sloppy start by us. In the first 20 minutes we could have been more than one down, we weren't reacting to them and their strengths," Lampard said. "This is always a difficult game, the way they're playing this season particularly, and the lads dug in, we got a little bit of luck, but you make your own luck and I think we deserved to win it.

"Coming to places like this, you know there's not normally many goals in it, so it's important for us."

Dzeko surprised to start ahead of Tevez against Norwich City

    242861hp2.jpg

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko admitted that he did not expect to start ahead of Carlos Tevez in the defending Premier League champion's 4-3 victory over Norwich City on Saturday.

Dzeko scored two goals in the first five minutes as City defeated the Canaries, and he thought he had bagged a hat-trick until his third strike was recorded as an own goal after hitting off the post and then the back of Norwich goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina international has built up a reputation as a 'super-sub' and says manager Roberto Mancini gave him no indication during training that he would partner with Sergio Aguero to start the match.

"I didn't expect to play, because it looked in training that I wouldn't," Dzeko told the club's official website. "I was surprised before the game when the manager gave the team. Everyone wants to play, I was back and gave the maximum."

Dzeko's first goal came after just 85 seconds, and the 26-year-old said that finding the target early had taken a weight off his shoulders."Maybe it's important to score the first chance, it's different when you're winning 1-0 - maybe it's easier when you're a goal ahead and then we got the second soon after," Dzeko said.

City was reduced to 10 men after Samir Nasri was sent off following a clash with Sebastien Bassong, but Dzeko claims he was confident that his side would see the game out even with the disadvantage ont he road.

"We did it once before against West Brom, we played with 10 men for 50 or 60 minutes. We did well and we did it again here. It was difficult, but we worked hard," Dzeko said.

Vidic: Next few months are important to avoid injury setbacks

    239628hp2.jpg

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic says that the next three months will be crucial in determining his recovery from serious knee injuries.

The tough-tackling center back injured three main ligaments in his knee against FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League last December, and he damaged the same area once again while training in September, further delaying his comeback.

United plans on taking a safety-first approach to Vidic's recovery, and although his schedule is dictated by medical staff, the 31-year-old is ready to get his career back on track and lead the club to glory. He made his return to the field from a three-month layoff on Dec. 15 as a substitute against Sunderland and has started two of the following three games for the Red Devils.

"The doctor is managing the games I am playing at the moment," Vidic told the club's official television station MUTV. "Over the first two or three months I have to really look at that, because sometimes I might have a reaction. This is a process I have to go through."

Table-topping United leads Premier League champion Manchester City by seven points going into the new year, and after finally returning to the starting XI, Vidic says he is simply happy to be playing and improving his game once again.

"I am glad I have managed to play after three months," Vidic said. "It is nice to be on the pitch and playing games. "Hopefully I can play more often so I can build my form and play better."

Sir Alex Ferguson's side travels to Wigan on New Year's Day looking to extend the advantage at the top of the table, while City hosts Stoke.

Llorente confirms he is leaving Athletic Bilbao

    241360hp2.jpg

Juventus target Fernando Llorente has confirmed he plans to leave Athletic Bilbao.

Goal.com reported earlier this week that the Bianconeri are set to make a renewed 7 million euro bid to try and tempt the Spanish striker to move to Turin in January before rival suitors can begin negotiations. It appears that the road is paved for that bid to be made now that Llorente has confirmed his intention to depart the Basque side, although he conceded it was painful to quit his boyhood club.

"I'm leaving Athletic," Llorente told Tuttosport. "The truth is that the project is very good, and for me it's a pain, an absolute sadness not to play next year in the new San Mames, but football is like that."

The 27-year-old refused to be drawn on his destination, however, stressing that his sole focus was to continue training and playing for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

"Everything is in the hands of my representatives. I'm only focused on training, to train, to play," Llorente added. "I'm just thinking about football today, about our league."

Llorente came through the Athletic Bilbao youth system and has played all of his top-flight soccer with the Spanish club. In addition to being on Juventus' radar, the Spanish international is said to be sought after by Premier League clubs Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, among others.
