Brazil 1-1 Russia: Fred equalizer saves Selecao

LONDON -- Brazil left it late to come from behind and earn a 1-1 draw against a resilient Russian side at Stamford Bridge.

Fabio Capello's men had the better start to proceedings but neither side truly tested the other in a tame first half. The Selecaosaw a lot more of the ball after the break but were unable to unlock a stubborn Russian defense, until Fred's late equalizer cancelled out Viktor Fayzulin's 73rd-minute opener for the draw.

Although a World Cup qualifier with Northern Ireland was postponed twice at the weekend, Russia began positively and called Julio Cesar into action after just three minutes. A thunderous free kick from Sergey Ignashevich was just about kept out of the bottom corner by the sprawling Canarinho keeper.

Momentum stayed with the eastern European side, and not long after Alexandr Kerzhakov threatened the Brazil goal but his rifled shot wide of the target.

Just three minutes later it took some last-ditch defending to keep Russia off the score sheet. Roman Shirokov failed to connect with a cross from the right and it took a fantastic block from Thiago Silva to stop Kerzhakov from slotting home at the back post.

Brazil eventually settled into the game but Neymar was unable to get a convincing effort on goal despite two chances falling his way before the half hour mark.

The tempo of the game soon dropped off as an intensely contested midfield battle limited the room within which either side could feed their attackers.

Moments before the break a brilliant move initiated by Fayzulin looked exceptionally dangerous, but after sprinting 60 yards for the return pass from Kerzhakov he saw Julio Cesar tip his effort around the post.

The Selecao enjoyed a far better start to the second half but for all their improved retention of possession they were unable to test Vladimir Gabulov before the hour mark.

Contributing to this was the compact and organized nature of the Russian defense. Red shirts swarmed upon the Brazilian players whenever they came close to entering the final third.

The Russian resilience finally paid off as the team took the lead, against the run of play, in the 73rd minute. A quick break down the left resulted in a goal mouth scramble and with the Brazilian defenders back protecting the line, Fayzulin was left unmarked to slot home after Shirokov had seen his effort blocked on the line by Fernando.

It looked as though Luiz Felipe Scolari was going to taste defeat for the second time in three games since returning to the helm as coach of Brazil, but Fred managed to slide in a late equalizer.

A brilliant reverse pass from Hulk played Marcelo in behind the defense on the left side of the area and his low pass across the face of goal was tapped home byFred.

Despite the Fluminense striker's heroics, Scolari remains without a win in his second stint with Brazil. Capello, meanwhile, will be pleased to have extended his unbeaten run as trainer to eight games.

Canada 0-2 Belarus: Canucks fall to pair of Belarusian headers

    203251hp2.jpg

Canada dropped a 2-0 decision to Belarus in Doha, Qatar, on Monday, extending its winless streak to to five games.

Goals by Vladimir Khvashchinskiy and Vitaly Rodionov gave the Belarusians the victory over the Canadians, who have yet to win a game in four tries in 2013, allowing eight goals in that time and only scoring one.

Belarus opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, as Rodionov nodded home a free kick in the 29th minute to give the European side the lead.

Khvashchinskiy scored the game's second goal just before the final whitsle, as his headed effort found the back of the Canadian net in the 88th minute. It was Khvashchinskiy's first-career international goal.

Canada leaves Doha after having also lost to Japan by a 2-1 scoreline last week.

Messi: Winning at Bolivia no easy feat

    265567hp2.jpg

The Barcelona star has warned his international teammates to avoid complacency ahead of the qualifier on Tuesday, as he is aware of the threat the opposition can pose.

Argentina star Lionel Messi has expressed caution ahead of his side's World Cup qualifier in Bolivia on Tuesday night.

Despite currently enjoying a four-point lead over second-placed Colombia at the top of CONMEBOL's qualification table, with Bolivia eighth out of nine teams, the Argentine and Barcelona attacker refused to accept the encounter at high altitude as easy.

"We have achieved nothing yet. We are playing Bolivia and they are hard to surpass," Messi told reporters.

The 25-year-old then reminded of the Albiceleste's last World Cup qualifier in Bolivia ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which saw the South American giant thrashed 6-1 at Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz.

"Everybody knows what happened last time, so we are hopeful to clinch a positive result," Messi said.

Spain not anxious at all, insists Del Bosque

    242514hp2.jpg

La Roja's boss remains confident after the two lackluster performances, and he calls for calm ahead of another tie against Didier Deschamp's men.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque says his men "are not anxious at all" heading into their World Cup qualifying Group I match against France on Tuesday.

Following 1-1 draws against Didier Deschamps' men and Finland, doubts have emerged on whether the reigning world and European champion still has what it takes to retain the top position in world football. Del Bosque is adamant that the dropped points and surprising results have had no effect on the team's composure.

"We are not anxious at all," Del Bosque told reporters on a press conference on Monday. "It is logical to reflect after what has happened in our last two games. Despite dominating completely we couldn't score more than once, so it is understandable that people will have doubts.

"But we must not get nervous, we must stay calm, open up the pitch and use the width. We do need to find solutions, but this will be a much more open game."

Del Bosque turned his focusing to Tuesday night's opponent, praising France, which played Spain to a 1-1 draw in their earlier group meeting.

"France have players with pace and the ambition to play football," Del Bosque said. "There are talented players such as [Karim] Benzema, [Franck] Ribery, [Yohan] Cabaye, [Mathieu] Valbuena.

"When the draw was made we knew France would be very difficult opponents for us. They have quality, experience and know how to play games like these."

Currently sitting second, Spain will have the chance to claim Les Bleus' first place in the group when they face off at Stade de France. Conversely, France can open up a five-point lead if it can defeat Spain in Paris.

Milan can finish second this season, believes Bonera

    199272hp2.jpg

The Rossoneri defender is confident that his side will qualify for the European competition next term, and insists he wants to remain at San Siro beyond this summer AC Milan center back Daniele Bonera is eying Champions League football with his club in the 2013-14 campaign, as he feels a second-place finish is realistic this season.

Massimiliano Allegri's men currently sit third in Serie A, two points behind second-placed Napoli, and Bonera is certain his team have what it takes to leapfrog the Partenopei at some point during the remaining campaign.

"Juventus are having an incredible season, but second place can be reached," the Italy veteran told Gazzetta dello Sport.

He added, "We've done some extraordinary things over these last few months. Second in the table is achievable, but we still have two hard months left which will include a number of head-to-head games."

Bonera also remarked that he would be happy to keep to stay at San Siro and help contribute to Milan's success in the future.

"I hope that I can move forward with this club," the out-of-favour defender continued. "I've been at Milan for seven years and I’d like to continue here."

After the international break, the Rossoneri will resume Serie A action with a trip to Chievo on March 30.

Van Persie: Germany youth set-up has caught up to Dutch

    265828hp2.jpg

The Manchester United striker says the three-time World Cup winners' investment after staging the 2006 World Cup has seen them catch up with Netherlands in youth development.

Netherlands and Manchester United forward Robin van Persie believes that Germany has caught up with his national team in terms of its youth development.

The former Feyenoord and Arsenal attacker believes Joachim Low's side has seen its infrastructure and training boosted since the 2006 World Cup but insists there is still an opportunity for the Oranje to surpass their European neighbors in terms of producing quality youngsters.

"It begins, of course, in the development of the youth," van Persie told onsoranje.nl. "In Netherlands we are good at appointing good coaches and training. But a country like Germany has caught up.
"They have the financial gains of the 2006 World Cup. I believe almost a billion Euros has been invested in youth. In coaches, accommodation, everything. I can see [a great] young generation of top players [in Germany].

"In Netherlands we can take such a step. There are many good players to come."
Germany has produced a generation of stars including Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Sami Khedira, but van Persie is convinced there are exciting prospects for his country too.

Van Persie faced off against Swansea City's Jonathan de Guzman, a Dutch compatriot earlier in the Premier League season and was impressed with what he saw.

"De Guzman is doing very well in the English league. He has a good skill-set, and his free kicks and corners are great," van Persie said.

    Podolski brushes off Juventus rumors

    259583hp2.jpg

The Germany international says he is enjoying life at Arsenal following his summer move from Koln and has no plans to seek another change of clubs in the coming transfer window Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski has insisted that he is happy to stay at the Emirates Stadium despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Juventus.

"I want to say two things," he told Bild. "Firstly, I cannot help it that clubs are interested in me. And there are always people behind the scenes who want to float something in this business.

He added, "Secondly, any interest makes me proud because it is a recognition of my performance in London. It is unlikely [that I will leave] because, at the club and in the town, I feel really comfortable.

The Germany international arrived at the north London club from Koln last summer and has scored eight league goals this season but has recently struggled with an ankle injury.

Podolski says he takes any interest from other clubs as a compliment but insists that he is enjoying life in London and has no plans to make another move in the near future.

"As a player you have peace and quiet. I appreciate that very much. Therefore, I can honestly say: I am not preparing for any change," Podolski stated.

Rooney showed a 'moment of weakness' last time, says Montenegro defender Dzudovic

    148229hp2.jpg

The Manchester United striker was famously red carded in Podgorica during England's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign for kicking out at the Spartak Nalchik defender Miodrag Dzudovic claims Wayne Rooney showed a "moment of weakness" in being sent off when England last played Montenegro.

The Manchester United striker was famously red carded for kicking out at Dzudovic in Podgorica during the Euro 2012 qualifiers but the defender, who is likely to start in place of the suspended Savo Pavicevic, says he has no malice towards Rooney ahead of the game on Tuesday.

"I did nothing to provoke him," Dzudovic told reporters. "We didn't say a single word to each other during the match. This was his moment of weakness. He is human, it can happen to anyone."

The 33-year-old defender admitted he wrote a letter to UEFA in a bid to reduce Rooney's three-game ban, and says he did not do it for the publicity.

"It was an initiative by the editor of the Russian sports newspaper Sovetsky Sport, who is a big fan of Manchester United and Rooney," he explained. "I told UEFA it wasn't an intentional foul, that he didn't want to injure me, that I wasn't hurt and I wasn't suffering any consequences."

He added, "I really meant it and I am glad I helped him. He didn't call me but I am not disappointed. I didn't do it for the publicity."

    Modric: Croatia must stop Bale

    265848hp2.jpg

The Real Madrid midfielder says that the club has to thwart the winger if it wants to win and capitalize on the impressive victory over Serbia at the weekend.

Luka Modric says Croatia must stop Gareth Bale if the team wants to capitalize on its impressive victory over Serbia, but admits his teammates should not take Wales for granted.

The Real Madrid star played alongside Bale during his time at Tottenham and is wary of the threat that his former teammate poses to Croatia.

"Can we stop Gareth? We must, because these are three very important points," Modric told the Daily Mirror. "The win against Serbia would ultimately mean a lot less if we do not beat Wales. One player can't win games by himself and we know that we will be up against a good team who will be roared on by a passionate home crowd."

Wales is looking to reduce the gap between itself and second-placed Croatia to four points with a win at the Liberty Stadium and is on good form following a 2-1 victory over Scotland on Friday.

Chris Coleman’s side lost Bale midway through the game but rallied to win. Despite the winger's obvious importance to the team, Coleman believes it can win without the him.

"I can understand why people look at the fact Gareth went off and say it could be the end of our hopes, but we don’t feel that within the group," Coleman added. "When we beat Scotland 2-1 in Cardiff it was different circumstances because we won late on. But the performance in Glasgow was much more mature and rounded – and half of it was without 'Baley'.

"We mustn't forget how good he is and, with him, of course the team is stronger. But the players have to take great confidence from that. Sometimes we won't have him so we need others to step up to the plate and that's what happened in Scotland. Everyone stepped up and it was a tremendous performance. Hopefully they can step up again. But we won’t get carried away as Croatia is a huge game and another big test for us."

Bolivia 1-1 Argentina: Albiceleste stumble at altitude but remain on track for Brazil

    266981hp2.jpg

The ghosts of La Paz were partially laid to rest as Argentina held on for a draw against Bolivia, coming from behind to seal a 1-1 draw that leaves the Albiceleste on the verge of booking a place in the 2014 World Cup.

Marcelo Martins repeated his scoring exploits in that infamous 6-1 destruction from 2009 to put the home side ahead, but Ever Banega responded with a well-taken header to avoid defeat for an uncharacteristically cautious Argentina.

Returning to the site of one of their worst results in history, Argentina came out with a tenuous outlook, trying to keep hold of possession early and absorb Bolivia's attacks, while waiting patiently to counter. The long grass of La Paz's Hernando Siles stadium, however, was not conducive to keeping the ball on the ground, and Alejandro Sabella's men struggled early on to compete against fearsome pressing from the home team.

The CONMEBOL leader had an early scare when Alejandro Bejarano evaded his markers, appearing at the far post. The fullback controlled a cross-field pass, but could not flick the ball over Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero with men waiting in the middle.

At the other end, the Albiceleste demonstrated that if given space, they could be devastating going forward. Brilliant play on the counter from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria left Rodrigo Palacio clean through with Sergio Galarza, but the Inter man failed to beat the Bolivia No. 1, who saved with his feet.

The Verde never stopped attacking their illustrious rivals, though, and were rewarded after 25 minutes with the opening goal. Alejandro Chumacero left Clemente Rodriguez standing on the right wing, and a well-placed cross found Marcelo Martins, who powered a header past Romero.

To their credit, Sabella's charges raised their game after the goal. Di Maria was guilty of missing a clear header from close range, but he almost redeemed himself with a wonderful individual effort. The Real Madrid man combined well with Gino Peruzzi before setting off on a lung-busting run in the La Paz altitude, and his shot from outside the area flew just wide of Galarza's left post to deny him a great strike.

Just when Argentina appeared certain to start the second half from a losing position, another clinical counter finally bore fruit. Javier Mascherano kick-started the break with a fine lofted pass, and Messi held on to the ball just long enough to find the overlapping Rodriguez. Clemente appeared to have stumbled on the uneven pitch, but he recomposed himself to flight the ball to the edge of the area, where Banega managed to get down and connect with a header that somehow crept past Galarza and into the net.

With just more than five minutes left, Messi looked certain to hit his first against Bolivia and seal three points, after breaking through with nobody to beat but Galarza. The away fans were already celebrating, but the Barcelona forward's usually-deadly aim failed him and he was foiled by the keeper, sealing a share of the spoils that nevertheless left Argentina content.

The draw leaves both sides in the positions they occupied before kickoff, Argentina extending its lead at the top over Colombia to five points albeit having played two more games. Bolivia, meanwhile, stays second from the bottom with just nine points from its 11 qualifying clashes.
