Everton 1-0 Stoke City: Mirallas keeps Toffees’ top four hopes alive

    267899hp2.jpg

LIVERPOOL -- Everton kept its chase for a top-four finish on track with a 1-1 draw against Stoke at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

In a game short of genuine quality, Kevin Mirallas' brilliant solo effort in the first half proved the sole highlight and helped the home side move within four points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

The Blues made three changes for their clash with the Potters, with suspended duo Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar making way for Phil Jagielka and Nikica Jelavic, while the fit-again Tim Howard replaced Jan Mucha in goal. Tony Pulis, meanwhile, was forced into omitting the injured Matt Etherington, with center back Robert Huth taking his place in the starting XI.

David Moyes had taken the unusual step of lining up with three central defenders, and the home team’s lack of familiarity with the formation almost cost it in the opening moments. Tim Howard did well to parry away Robert Huth’s header but received a huge slice of luck as Jon Walters’ follow up bounced back off the bar.

In spite of that early moment of interest the Goodison Park crowd was subsequently treated to a dire opening 20 minutes, with both sides struggling to get going. Jelavic’s header straight into the hands of Asmir Begovic was the only chance of note as the home side toiled despite controlling possession.

Both sides had real difficulty in stringing passes together throughout the opening half hour on Merseyside and so it was perhaps unsurprising that the first goal came through a moment of individual inspiration.

Everton had been defending a corner in its own box before Howard’s punch away reached Mirallas in the center circle and, though the Belgian had a slice of luck in evading N’Zonzi, he evidenced every ounce of his quality in gliding past Geoff Cameron before finishing his great work off with a cool finish despite Begovic’s best efforts.

Unfortunately for the Toffees, the goal did not facilitate a flurry of chances.

Rather unsurprisingly, the second half started in similar fashion, before the cloud of mediocrity was lifted with 20 minutes gone as Huth and Jelavic both went close with headed efforts at either end.

Everton vastly improved from that point on, with two successive threatening runs brought to an end by cynical Stoke fouls on the edge of the box and Jelavic going close with a free kick at the second attempt.

The match largely petered out from that point on, with young substitute Ross Barkley's yellow card for an enthusiastic tackle on Whelan a rare moment of interest. The Toffees would have cared little, however, as they grabbed three points which keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Zaragoza 1-1 Real Madrid: Ronaldo saves Blancos from defeat at La Romareda

Real Madrid failed to close the gap at the top of La Liga as the team was held to a 1-1 draw by Zaragoza at La Romareda.

On-loan Barcelona B player Rodri gave the home side the perfect start as los Merengues struggled to get a foothold in the game. Cristiano Ronaldo managed to net an equalizer before the break with his 28th league strike of the season but Madrid could not find another in a lackluster second.

Things did not go to plan from the start for Jose Mourinho's men as the relegation-embroiled side took a surprise lead in the sixth minute.

Apono poked the ball off of the toe of Luka Modric and straight into the path of Rodri who raced through one-on-one with Diego Lopez. He shaped to hit the ball across the keeper but stylishly placed it in the other corner, finishing with aplomb.

Madrid was extremely rushed in possession but still came desperately close to finding an equalizer soon after. Marcelo's cross-field pass fell over the shoulder of Ronaldo but he was unable to guide his first-time volley into the top corner.

Los Blancos were struggling for fluency in the final third and a searing Rodri effort that arrowed narrowly over the bar almost doubled their woes.

But the visitors were presented with an opportunity to draw level with 27 minutes on the clock as Roberto Jimenez failed to collect Luka Modric's in-swinging free kick. Glenn Loovens' sliced clearance presented Pepe with a chance to head in the equalizer, but the Dutchman recovered to poke the ball off of the line.

Madrid was resorting to a long-ball game but it paid off in the 38th minute. Pepe's pass from deep was not dealt with by Loovens and Ronaldo bulldozed through the defense before lashing a low shot past Roberto at his near post.

The scoreline would have been completely reversed two minutes later had it not been for a top save from Roberto to keep Michael Essien's header out of the net.

The reigning Liga champion did not let up after the break but the score somehow remained level as Marcelo hit the post of an open goal after Roberto had done superbly to deny Ronaldo in the 48th minute.

Zaragoza was by no means ready to surrender and soon returned to the intensity levels that had caused the visiting side so many problems in the first half.

In an attempt to revive his team Mourinho added Sami Khedira, Angel di Maria and Mesut Ozil on the hour mark, but the game remained delicately balanced.

In fact it was the Blanquillos who were looked increasingly likely to steal a winner but Diego Lopez ensured the draw as he did brilliantly to keep out a pair of top-drawer headers from Helder Postiga in the closing stages.

The result means Madrid remains 14 points behind Barcelona, which could only manage a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo earlier on Saturday. Zaragoza, meanwhile, will be hopeful that the unexpected result can provide a late surge to safety.

:cool:Messi scores against every Liga team in a row

The prolific attacker continued his impressive scoring streak against Celta Vigo and has now scored versus 19 different sides in the Primera Division this term
Lionel Messi's goal against Celta Vigo in Saturday's 2-2 draw means that the Barcelona star has now found the net against each opponent in La Liga this season.

The Argentina international beat Celta goalkeeper Javi Varas from close range in the 73rd minute after being set up by Cristian Tello to make it 2-1 for the Blaugrana, and take his season's league tally to 43.

Messi's goal was not enough for the full three points, though, as Borja Oubina restored parity in the closing stages of the encounter.

The 25-year-old's goal also saw him extend his scoring streak to an incredible 19 consecutive Primera Division matches.

Last season, Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo became the first-ever player to score against every opponent in La Liga in one campaign since the extension of the top Spanish tier to 20 teams.

Aston Villa midfielder Makoun set to sign Rennes deal

    139637hp2.jpg

The Cameroon international is set to leave the Villans after an unsuccessful two-year spell at the club, joining the Ligue 1 outfit for an undisclosed fee.Aston Villa has confirmed that midfielder Jean Makoun is set to leave Villa Park and make his loan deal at Rennes permanent this summer.

The Cameroon international will sign for the French Ligue 1 outfit this summer for an undisclosed fee, having made 22 appearances for Les Rouges et Noirs since joining them on loan last summer.

Makoun has struggled to hold down a place in the Villans squad and has made just seven Premier League appearances since arriving from Lyon for 6 million pounds in January 2011.

In a statement on the club's official website, Aston Villa confirmed that the Cameroonian's brief stay at the club is set to come to an end.

"French Ligue 1 club Rennes will exercise their option to complete a permanent move for Jean Makoun in the summer transfer window. "The deal for an undisclosed fee will go through on July 1."

Makoun's loan spell at Rennes was preceded by a season-long loan at Olympiakos, where he made 18 appearances and helped the team win the Greek Super League.

Jose Mourinho: Diego Lopez could remain Real Madrid No.1

The Portuguese acknowledged the potential selection headache he could face selecting his first-choice custodian, as captain Iker Casillas nears a return to action.
Real Madrid trainer Jose Mourinho says Iker Casillas could find it hard to displace Diego Lopez upon his comeback from injury.

The winter arrival, signed in response to Casillas' bone fracture in January, has surpassed expectations in the skipper's absence, putting in a series of assured performances for los Blancos.

And Mourinho's acknowledgement of such has placed the Madrid captain's squad status in doubt.

"We must be honest. The way Diego is playing, it will be very hard to get him out of the net," Mourinho said. "I cannot say for certain that he will be stay there till the end of the season, but he is playing very well. For now, it will be difficult for Casillas to be on the bench against Galatasaray, but he will surely be there for Levante."

The Spanish champion drew 1-1 against Zaragoza on Saturday after Cristiano Ronaldo canceled out Rodri's early opener, prompting Mourinho to lament his team's scoring touch deserting it this season.

"It is true that all our players except Ronaldo have scored less goals this season, and therefore the team suffers," the 50-year-old continued. "But I believe they will come, if not this season, then the next. It is not a matter of winning the league now, but to secure second place.

"Our goals remain the same; to progress to the Copa del Rey final and beyond the quarterfinals of the Champions League."

Madrid hosts Galatasaray in Europe's premier club competition on Wednesday.

Messi insists Liga goal streak is unimportant

The attacker is glad to have helped the Catalunya club thrive with his strikes in 19 successive Primera Division games, but regrets dropping points against Celta on Saturday.

Lionel Messi has dismissed the importance of his goal streak and lamented Barcelona dropping points against Celta Vigo on Saturday evening.

The Argentine has scored in 19 successive Liga matches and his strike in the 2-2 draw with the Liga relegation candidates ensured he has scored against every opposition team - a feat Cristiano Ronaldo achieved last season, albeit not in a row.

"The least important thing is the streak," he told reporters after the match. "I was fortunate to score in all those games and help the team to keep on track.

"But that's not important. We wanted to win after the effort of the squad that were selected but we could not."

Although Tito Vilanova is not back to coaching the squad just yet, he is back with the team and Messi insisted it is fundamental to have the boss back around.

He said: "Tito seems very lively and it is very important that he is back with us."

Barca resumes Champions League duties on Tuesday night at Paris Saint-Germain, and Messi is keen to recuperate ahead of what he perceives to be a potentially tricky quarterfinal tie.

He added: "Now we have to rest to get fit and get a good result will be a meeting against a team we know are our equals."

Moyes: I'll discuss my Everton future in the summer

    240155hp2.jpg

After the Toffees' 1-0 win over Stoke pushed them within four points of Champions League qualification, their long-serving boss will wait until the season's end to make a decision.Everton manager David Moyes has said that he will not discuss his future with the club until the end of the season.

The Toffees overcame Stoke 1-0 on Saturday evening courtesy of a wonderful Kevin Mirallas solo effort, meaning that the team moves within four points of Chelsea in fourth.

Despite his admission that Champions League football next season is a distinct possibility, Moyes has outlined his desire to wait until the season draws to an end before seeing how to best "move forward".

"I've always said we want to see how the club do and see how we can move forward together and the best time for us to discuss that is at the end of the season," he told ESPN.

"We are the big underdogs, we need results to go for us as well as us winning our games, but we are in there and it is a great thing to say Everton are in with a chance of the Champions League. We deserve to be there because of how well we've played this season."

The long-serving Everton boss was also keen to emphasize the importance of the win over Stoke as he lauded Mirallas' contribution to proceedings."We've not had a great record against Stoke City recently so it was important we got the three points," he continued. "It was a great goal. Against Stoke sometimes you need individual players to win you the game because they are really well organized and hard to break down.

"I think he must have run 70 yards to finish it off. He has given us something else. We changed how we played today as we had lost two important players and thankfully we got the points."

Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle United: Dominant champions pile pressure on Pardew

    article-2301478-1901BF77000005DC-994_634x332.jpg

MANCHESTER -- Manchester City will soon give up its Premier League title but it maintained its grip on second place by comfortably brushing aside Newcastle United 4-0 in a one-sided clash.

First half goals from Carlos Tevez and David Silva were supplemented by a delicious back-heeled flick from Vincent Kompany on his long-awaited return to the team early in the second half. Yaya Toure capitalized by smashing in the fourth.

As the first semblance of spring loosened winter’s icy grip on March, City has the warm feeling of a comprehensive victory that lifts it to 62 points and five clear of third-placed Tottenham. At lunchtime, Manchester United had maintained their iron grip on the title race by winning at Sunderland to extend their league lead to a remarkable 18 points.

Mancini has long accepted that the main fight is for the minor places, but at least the Italian had the satisfaction of City narrowing the gap back to 15 with one of their more convincing displays of the season. By contrast, Newcastle is left looking uncomfortably over their shoulders as they risk getting sucked into the drop zone. Wigan’s victory over Norwich means Alan Pardew’s team is now only three points clear of 18th place.

Earlier, City welcomed skipper Kompany back into the team after two months and eight matches on the sidelines. He was partnered in central defense by Joleon Lescott as Mancini made five changes from the team that lost to Everton on 16 March, with Yaya Toure, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri also returning to the starting X1.

Injury-crippled Newcastle, missing a host of regulars including Tim Krul, Hatem Ben Arfa, Mathieu Debuchy, Fabricio Colocinni and Cheick Tiote, made four changes, with Danny Simpson and Gabriel Obertan handed rare starts. Rookies Adam Campbell and Curtis Good, neither of whom have made a first-team start, were named on the substitute’s bench.

The champions nearly became the latest victims of a volleyed special from Papiss Cisse midway through the opening period. A floated Vurnon Anita cross was met with a stinging shot from a seemingly nonthreatening angle but Joe Hart’s left leg prevented the Senegalese striker putting his team ahead.

Moments later, Gareth Barry was unable to match Cisse’s composure in front of goal. The midfielder had the goal at his mercy after a rebound fell neatly into his path but, much to the joy of the Newcastle fans behind Rob Elliot’s goal, Barry blazed his finish wildly over the bar.

While the Englishman looked for a giant hole to swallow him up, City finally threw off the shackles. Gael Clichy had a shot saved well by Eliot, Dzeko headed just wide from a corner and Silva had a goal correctly ruled out for offside. Four minutes before the break, Newcastle’s resistance was over. Clichy’s teasing cross on the run presented Tevez with a golden opportunity to extend his scoring run and the Argentine duly bundled in his seventh goal in six matches.

On the cusp of halftime, a now rampant home side doubled their advantage. Silva was surrounded by a posse of black-and-white shirts as he collected Nasri’s pass in the box, but the Spaniard smartly shifted the ball to his left and arrowed his shot across the goal and beyond Eliot’s left hand.

The visitors demonstrated greater purpose after the break, with Yohan Cabaye coming close to giving the traveling Newcastle support something to really sing about.

However, the game was effectively made safe for City after 56 minutes when the visitors failed to clear a corner. Barry’s fizzed shot from the edge of the box was met with the most impudent and delicate of flicks from Kompany, who back-heeled it into the net on the volley.

Toure steamrollered past a retreating Newcastle defense to smash in the fourth from a tight angle, although the Ivorian benefited from a slight deflection from sub James Perch. Immediately afterwards, Kompany left the pitch to a standing ovation. The job had been done and the home fans could relax and enjoy a passing exhibition for the remaining minutes.

Mancini took off the pressure b saying the title race is over.
he could have done it earlier :baffled:
anyway i dont see city loosing the 2nd place. and we should give our best to clinch the FA cup n meet manchester united at Community shield :P

Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool: Gerrard penalty keeps Lambert's men in the bottom three

    268115hp2.jpg

A Steven Gerrard penalty completed the turnaround as Liverpool came from behind to beat Aston Villa in a Premier League clash on Easter Sunday.

Christian Benteke had given the Villans a first-half lead. Jordan Henderson equalized immediately after halftime before Gerrard then stepped up, after Luis Suarez had been felled in the box, to convert what would prove the winning spot kick.

Paul Lambert named an unchanged side from the win over QPR last time out while Brendan Rodgers welcomed back Pepe Reina and Jamie Carragher but Daniel Sturridge had to settle for a place on the bench.

Gabriel Agbonlahor squandered a glorious opportunity to give the home side the lead in the 16th minute as he side-footed an effort from just seven yards out straight at Reina after Matthew Lowton had delivered a delicious low cross from the right.

Four minutes later Suarez came close to adding to his 22 league goals this season as he picked up a clever reverse pass from Glen Johnson and smashed high towards goal, forcing Brad Guzan to parry over the top of the bar.

But it was Villa that would take the lead after 32 minutes courtesy of Benteke. Agbonlahor provided the assist for his strike partner as he took down a long pass from Ashley Westwood with his thigh before the Belgian smashed a first-time half volley at goal that Reina could only help into the corner of his net.

Villa was nearly the architect of its own downfall shortly after, though, as Barry Bannan's wayward pass towards his own goal only served to put Suarez through. The Uruguay international was denied by Guzan as he looked to slot his effort through the goalkeeper's legs.

Liverpool again came close to forcing an equalizer before halftime as, in the 43rd minute, Stewart Downing and Philippe Coutinho worked a short corner between them before laying off for Gerrard to send a dipping right-foot shot towards goal that Guzan again did well to push away with his left hand.

The visiting side didn't have to wait long after the break to get back into the game. Two minutes after the restart, Henderson raced onto a delightful through pass from Coutinho before steadying himself and lifting a composed effort over the advancing Guzan and into the net.

Liverpool then came close to taking the lead as Coutinho first struck wide following a clever run across Villa right back Lowton before Johnson struck the post with a bending right-foot effort that flicked off Bannan before rattling the woodwork.

With the next attack, though, the Reds were in front. Suarez, so deadly in and around the 18-yard box, jinked inside Nathan Baker, tempting the young defender into a challenge, and referee Lee Mason had little choice but to point to the spot where Gerrard made no mistake in slotting low to Guzan's right.

Gerrard was then instrumental at the other end as he reacted superbly to head Benteke's powerful header off the line before Lowton had Reina scrambling with a cross-shot that forced the Spaniard to tip over the crossbar.

Benteke did hit the net for a second time in stoppage time although the goal was rightly chalked off for offside and, as the final whistle blew, the result did little to ease Villa's relegation fears, while Liverpool moved to within three points of Merseyside rival Everton.

Hulk talks up Neymar Russia move

    264270hp2.jpg

The former Porto star is the latest personality within the game to speculate on where Neymar will end up, and has mentioned Zenit as a potential destination
Hulk says it would be "very good" if Neymar were to join him in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg.

The Santos striker is one of the most sought-after talents in world football and has reportedly courted the interest of European giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the latter of which is understood to be the front-runner to land the star.

Speculation has been that Neymar requires a move to one of Europe's elite leagues in a bid to further his development. Hulk, however, has offered an alternative view and believes the starlet should resist the allure of playing in Germany or Spain by opting for a move to join him in Russia.

"I think that he knows when he needs to change his club. He will do it when he needs to. I can't choose for Neymar. Only he knows where he wants to go, but it would very good to have a player like that at Zenit," Hulk told R-Sport.

The 21-year-old has been the target of criticism lately following a couple of lackluster displays against Italy and Russia in Europe at international level, prompting some to believe the striker struggles to replicate his high standard of performances when crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

But Brazil teammate Hulk has leapt to his defense and says the youngster's talent is clear to all.

He added: "Footballers are always subject to criticism, but the world knows how good a player Neymar is and knows about the quality in his game."

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Valencia: Courtois stars

    160400hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid wasted an opportunity to leapfrog city rival Real and go second in La Liga this evening, as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia at Vicente Calderon.

The visiting side went ahead through Jonas early on, but was soon pegged back by los Rojiblancos as Radamel Falcao equalized with a neatly-taken volley shortly after. Ernesto Valverde's team had 12 shots at goal in the first half but was thwarted on a number of occasions by some inspired goalkeeping from the on-loan Thibaut Courtois.

The odds were stacked against Valencia as it traveled to Madrid, with Atletico having won 39 of a possible 42 points at the Calderon this season. Los Che were also without three of their first-team players, including top goalscorer Roberto Soldado. Sofiane Feghouli and Victor Ruiz also missed the trip through injury.

Despite the depleted squad, it was Valencia that raced into a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Jonas fired the ball between Courtois' legs and into the net from eight yards out. Some poor defending from Atletico allowed the Brazilian to score, as he profited from being afforded a second goalscoring chance in the space of seconds by the dawdling defensive duo of Diego Godin and Miranda.

However, that advantage lasted just 90 seconds, as Atletico quickly leveled through Falcao - a player who went in to the game having never scored against Valencia. The Colombia international raced on to a deft chipped pass from Arda Turan and slipped a neat volley past Diego Alves.

Valverde's men were not put off by Atletico's quick reply though and continued to push forward, particularly through Joao Pereira and Andres Guardado on the wings.

Only a fabulous save from Atletico's Courtois kept Dani Parejo's ambitious long-range free kick out in the 21st minute, while an intelligent move between Guardado and Parejo was emphatically brought to an end by a perfectly judged sliding tackle by Gabi inside the penalty area.

Two more fine stops from Courtois before the break kept the score level, as Valencia controlled the first half for long periods.

The start of the second half was punctuated by some nasty challenges from players on both sides, and Atletico's Miranda spent a couple of minutes receiving treatment in the center circle after an ill-timed tackle by Pablo Piatti.

Some smart goalkeeping from Alves stopped Diego Costa from putting Atletico ahead in the 60th minute, as the Spaniard raced from his line to push the ball away from Costa just as he prepared to shoot after taking Falcao's sumptuous looping pass in his stride.

Despite making a defensive substitution as Simeone's side started to threaten by bringing on Aly Cissokho for the quiet Nelson Valdez, los Che nearly sealed all three points when Parejo lashed a long-range strike just wide in the 85th minute.

Ramos: Galatasaray is more than Burak

    255175hp2.jpg

The 27-year-old says the striker is not the only Gala player capable of denting Madrid's hopes of a 10th Champions League Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos says there is more to Galatasaray than Burak Yilmaz.

In addition to Burak, the Turkish giant also boasts formidable names such as Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba in its ranks Both players know what it takes to win the competition, having won it with Inter and Chelsea, respectively.

And speaking to the club's official website, Ramos says it would be a mistake to focus efforts solely on Burak while ignoring the threat posed by Galatasaray as a whole.

"He [Burak] is an important player for them, but it’s not just about him. They are a dangerous side on a collective level, not just individually."

Diego Lopez is believed to have done enough to retain his starting berth for Galatasray's visit, despite Iker Casillas recently returning to full training.

Asked about Iker Casillas' position in the team following the performances of stand-in goalkeeper Lopez as of late, Ramos opted for a diplomatic approach: "Mourinho decides and names the eleven [starting players].

"The positive thing is that Casillas is back with the squad and with the goalkeepers that we have we’re covered as far as the goal is concerned."

Abate: Balotelli is the cherry on top

    246602hp2.jpg

The 26-year-old praised the impact the striker has had following his January move from Manchester City, and says the team is "in good shape" ahead of the showdown with Fiorentina.Ignazio Abate has hailed teammate Mario Balotelli as the "cherry on top" of the AC Milan squad.

The former Inter starlet has been in scintillating form since returning to Italy in January, netting seven times in as many games, a run of form which has propelled the Italian giant to third in Serie A and made the club a favorite to achieve Champions League qualification.

Abate, speaking to the club's official website, says the Rossoneri are benefiting from boasting a spine through the team which understands the core values of Milan and that is fronted by the prolific new striker.

"The president gave us Balotelli in January. He's the cherry on top our cake, he makes the team dangerous," he said.
"Now the spine of [a lasting] team is being built and it’s an Italian one that understands what it means to wear these colors."

The 26-year-old then turned his attention to Fiorentina ahead of next week's trip to Florence.

Milan is currently in pole position to secure the third and final Champions League spot ahead of the Viola, who trail Massimiliano Allegri's men by six points.

Abate says the team is well prepared for the clash due to the significance of the fixture.

"This is a team that plays with a knife between its teeth and we can make life difficult for any team," he added. "[The match against Fiorentina is a] big game for Champions League qualification, but right now we're in good shape both physically and mentally."
