Sevilla 2-1 Athletic Bilbao: Negredo settles thrilling clash as both sides finish with 10 men

    260634hp2.jpg

Sevilla's UEFA Europa League aspirations were kept alive on Monday after Alvaro Negredo's 87th-minute winner denied Athletic Bilbao a point at Estadio Ramon Sanchez in a match that ended with both teams down a man.

The hosts went ahead in the fourth minute when Negredo rose highest to nod home Ivan Rakitic's free-kick.Despite the early goal, both sides settled, and it was not until the 55th minute that Carlos Gurpegi added parity to the scoreline when his flicked header from Ibai Gomez's free kick deceived Beto in the Sevilla goal for the equalizer.

The visitors were handed a fresh impetus in their pursuit of a winner when Fernando Navarro was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Aritz Aduriz. Bilbao failed to capitalize on its numerical advantage, though, and it was soon 10 vs. 10 when Aymeric Laporte got himself booked twice in three minutes and followed Navarro down the tunnel.

Despite little time remaining on the clock, a late twist saw Negredo strike to claim all three points for Sevilla, tapping home from close range after Jose Antonio Reyes fired across the face of goal.

Unai Emery's men now move to within six points of seventh-placed Real Betis, who occupy the third and final Europa League place in La Liga. Sevilla has the opportunity to bridge that gap to just four points when it takes on Pepe Mel's side at the Benito Villamarin this Friday.

:(Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City: Late, great Aguero strike settles cagey derby

    waynerooneydavidsilva20121209_576x324.jpg

Manchester City ensured rival Manchester United would have to wait a little longer to claim the Premier League title as the visitors claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win at Old Trafford, though remain 12 points behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

City took the lead through James Milner, whose powerful shot wormed its way past David De Gea, before a Vincent Kompany own goal restored the equilibrium just minutes later.

But it was the away side which struck the decisive, final blow through substitute Sergio Aguero, whose viscous near-post shot rocketed into the top corner to guarantee victory for Roberto Mancini’s team.

Wayne Rooney returned in attack for the Red Devils, partnering Robin van Persie up front, while Jones was picked in defense. Veteran Ryan Giggs was selected to appear in his 37th Manchester derby.

Ex-red Carlos Tevez spearheaded City’s attack with Sergio Aguero only fit enough for a place on the bench, while captain Kompany lined up in the center of defense.

The game started at a frenetic pace, with both sides hurtling forwards and City especially eager to reclaim local pride and spoil the Old Trafford party. The away side’s right flank was particularly dangerous, with Milner fizzing crosses into the box.

But after the frantic early exchanges, the game settled into a calmer, more measured pace. City came closest to opening the scoring, with David Silva collecting Yaya Toure’s crossfield pass, but the Spaniard’s pull-back was thumped clear by Jones.

In a half of few chances, it was adventurous fullback Rafael who had the home side’s best effort. The Brazilian latched onto Van Persie’s flick-on, but his looping, poked finish could only find the outside of Joe Hart’s near post – though the England keeper looked to have it covered.

United began the second half well, with Sir Alex Ferguson geeing up the crowd with a fist-pump, but it was City which struck first, lighting the blue touch paper.

Gareth Barry robbed Giggs in midfield and burst up the left flank, before squaring the ball to Silva on the edge of the box. The Spaniard then teed up Milner, whose powerful effort flicked off Jones and flew into the net to give City a 51st-minute lead.

But the advantage lasted just eight minutes before United had equalized. Van Persie, in the midst of a goal drought, turned provider to send in an inch-perfect cross towards Jones, with the defender heading the ball against Kompany and into the back of the net.

The play dulled somewhat after that goal rush, until substitute Aguero produced a moment of magic. With few options and being pushed further and further away from goal, the Argentine finally unleashed a ferocious shot that thundered into the roof of the net.

United tried to mount a response, with Sir Alex introducing super-sub Chicharito and Patrice Evra heading straight at Hart, but it was in vain as City clung on to claim a morale-boosting win which delays the Red Devils’ wait for a 20th championship crown.

Roma 1-1 Lazio: Totti penalty denies 10-man Biancocelesti derby win

    270556hp2.jpg

The shares were spoiled in a hotley contested Derby della Capitale as Roma and Lazio battled to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico Monday.

Hernanes had handed the intiative to the vistors in the first half before Francesco Totti levelled on the 55th minute from the penalty spot as Lazio leapfrogged Inter into fifth as Roma stayed in seventh.

Roma began the stronger of the two sides as Erik Lamela tested Federico Marchetti in the first minute with a close-range header having been picked out at the back post by Totti, only for the Lazio goalkeeper to comfortably hold.
The hosts failed to capitalize on their early pressure, though, and allowed Lazio back into the encounter, with Antonio Candreva being picked out in space on the right before smashing an effort towards Maarten Stekelenburg, which the Dutchman palmed away for a corner.

The Biancocelesti made their dominance count on the 15-minute mark as Senad Lulic countered from a Roma corner. He picked out the unmarked Hernanes in space in the middle of the park, and the Brazilian cut onto his left foot before launching an unstoppable effort past Stekelenburg from 25 yards.Hernanes then looked to turn provider as he picked out the marauding Lulic in the 18-yard box before the latter launched a low drive towards the near post, only for Stekelenburg to turn his strike out for a corner.

Roma struggled to muster any real clear cut opportunities as Vasilis Torosidis fired from distance, with Marchetti untroubled by the effort from the Greek defender, while Candreva blasted his long range free kick over the bar as the visitors continued to press for a second.

Lazio held firm against their city rivals, but Marchetti was forced again into action in the last minute of the first half, as Totti tested his compatriot from distance having been played in by Alessandro Florenzi following some good work by the Roma midfielder on the left.

Vladimir Petkovic's side had the opportunity to double the advantage just after the interval after Paulo Mazzoleni pointed to the spot following Marquinho's handball.Hernanes failed to hit the target and sent his penalty wide of the woodwork, though, giving Roma a lifeline.Hernanes then conceded a penalty at the other end having brought down Miralem Pjanic, and Totti stepped up and nestled his spot kick into the bottom corner just out of reach of Marchetti to level the score.

Marchetti was then called into action to first deny a Totti free kick midway through the second half before the Lazio goalkeeper prevented Florenzi from the rebound as Roma pushed to take the initiative.

The visitors' evening was made that much harder with 20 minutes remaining as Giuseppe Biava was handed his marching orders by Mazzoleni following his second yellow card.Roma looked to make its numerical advantage count and perhaps should've gone in front with 10 minutes remaining, but Erik Lamela somehow turned Totti's corner over the bar from two yards out.

The hosts pressed late on to secure the winner, with Marchetti holding Totti's free kick five minutes from time, as the scores remained level and Lazio failed to close the gap on third-placed AC Milan.

Result more important than record, says Totti

    270556hp2.jpg

The Roma captain admits his new derby goalscoring record may be his best, but he would have rather his team won the game Francesco Totti has admitted that he would rather have secured three points for Roma instead of securing a ninth derby goal for himself.

Totti's 57th minute penalty tied him for the most goals in Derby Della Capitale history, but the side only managed to gain a point in the 1-1 draw with Lazio.

“I wanted [the record] so much, it is my most beautiful record. But I wanted the win more,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

The former Italian international, who converted from the spot after Miralem Pjanic was taken down by Hernanes in the area, added that his side had not performed in the first 45 minutes.

“We threw it away in the first half," he explained.

"Unfortunately we did not get into the game immediately and they put us under great difficulty.”

Ferguson praises 'absolutely fantastic' Van Persie despite drought continuing

    270576hp2.jpg

The Manchester United manager saw the positives in his side's derby defeat at Old Trafford and believes James Milner's opening goal should have been waved off for interference.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Robin van Persie's "absolutely fantastic" performance in the 2-1 defeat to rival Manchester City on Monday night, despite the striker extending his scoreless streak to 10 games.

The Netherlands international helped provide the assist for United's equalizer with an in-swinging free kick, although he was once again profligate in front of goal as he again failed to find the back of the net.

But Ferguson was quick to praise the former Arsenal striker's contribution and is sure that the Red Devils are still on course in their pursuit of the Premier League title, despite Sergio Aguero's winning goal cutting the gap to 12 points with seven games to go.

"There were a lot of plus points for us," Ferguson told Sky Sports following the match. "The evidence is clear that our form is good, I've no complaints about that. I thought Van Persie was absolutely fantastic today. I brought Wayne Rooney back – he almost played 90 minutes. That'll bring him on again, because he's missed a couple of games.

"Looking at the whole thing it's not a bad day for us in terms of performance level. You don't want to lose a derby game, but we're OK.

"It was a very intense game, competitive - two of the best teams in the country. The opening period was end to end but nothing quite happened. We were quite dangerous a few times on the counterattack where we should have done better, but I thought second half we were the better team - I thought we were unlucky to lose it."

The United manager rued his side's defending in allowing Aguero to break into the box to score the winning goal and suggests that James Milner's opener should have been ruled out for offside.

"We must look at ourselves in terms of the goals we've lost," Ferguson said. "We know Aguero's a fantastic finisher. That's what they brought him on for, but we gave him a lot of room for that.

"The first goal? Certainly Tevez is interfering with play, but the linesman on that side, no way was he giving it. But it's disappointing because he's clearly in the road of the goalkeeper – if that's not interference then I don't know what is."

We have the best defense in Serie A, says Napoli's Cannavaro

    253554hp2.jpg

Napoli’s captain was very pleased with his team's defending after his side claimed a 2-0 Serie A victory over Genoa on Sunday to create separation in second place.
Paolo Cannavaro has stressed the importance of his side picking up all three points against bottom-of-the-table Genoa on Sunday, but also felt it was vital for his team to keep a clean sheet ahead of a crunch clash with AC Milan.

Napoli won 2-0 at the San Paolo thanks to goals from Goran Pandev and Blerim Dzemaili, but Cannavaro focused on his side's defensive display.

“Beyond the victory, which allows us to extend our lead over Milan, today it was also important not to concede a goal,” he told Mediaset Premium. “Many forget that we are the best defense in the league, so congratulations to us.”

Napoli has conceded the second-fewest goals in the league this season, while posting the second-best goal differential, trailing only Juventus.

The defense will be put to the test in less than a week when Napoli travels to San Siro to take on Milan in a battle for second place, with the Rossoneri just four points back in the standings.

“Today it was important not to concede, and on Sunday comes a crucial match," Cannavaro said. “We have recently broken, but we found ourselves.”

Inter's Cassano ruled out for a month

    267783hp2.jpg

The Nerazzuri suffered another blow to their already depleted strikeforce following the news of the 30-year-old forward's hamstring injury.

Inter Milan has confirmed that veteran forward Antonio Cassano is set to be out of action for at least a month after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday's 4-3 defeat to Atalanta.

The Italy international was substituted 30 minutes into the match and is expected to be sidelined for just about the remainder of the season after the club revealed the extent of the injury.

"We have tested Antonio Cassano following the accident which occured during the first half of Inter-Atalanta, and results of his scan showed a second degree lesion myotendinous to his right hamstring," Inter Milan wrote in a team statement.

The news comes less than a week after striker Rodrigo Palacio was ruled out for the same duration, and, with Diego Milito also in the treatment room, it leaves Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni with Tomasso Rocchi as the only available center forward for the visit of Roma in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal next Wednesday. Roma carries a 2-1 lead into the return leg at San Siro.

Rocchi netted his 100th goal in Serie A - his first in more than a year - in Sunday's defeat, but speaking to the club's official website, the 35-year-old expressed regret that he could not celebrate reaching the milestone with a victory.

"I hadn’t scored for a long time, and I needed to regain the right mindset to face matches and get my form back. But I can’t be entirely happy. It would have been better to celebrate my 100th goal with a win," Rocchi said.

It is our time to make history, says Ibrahimovic

The striker remains confident and says his team can pick up a result in Wednesday’s second leg of its Champions League quarterfinal with Barcelona.
Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic says his side can "make history" by beating Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

PSG will travel to Camp Nou on Wednesday evening in need of an improbable result against Barcelona. After drawing 2-2 in the first leg in Paris, the Ligue 1 leaders will require a win or at least two goals against the Spanish giants to combat Barcelona's two away goals.

A defeat or 1-1 draw will see the French club go out of the competition.

“It will be difficult,” Ibrahimovic told Globoesporte. “It is a great challenge, but it is our time to make history.”

PSG still has hopes of a trebel alive, with the club seven points clear atop the Ligue 1 table while being alive in the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France as well.

Anything is possible, says Galatasaray boss Terim

The Galatasaray boss says has acknowledged that his side have a tough task in beating Real Madrid by four goals but stressed that football can be unpredictable
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim believes his side's Champions league tie against Real Madrid is not completely over.

The Turkish champions lost 3-0 in the first leg in Madrid, and while Terim is anticipating a tough encounter in Tuesday's second leg, he has promised that his side will give its all in Istanbul.

"Anything is possible in football, but when you are playing against Real Madrid things are not so easy," Terim told reporters. "Galatasaray will try everything. I am sure about the ambition and enthusiasm of my players. We have prepared ourselves for any kind of result.

"Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world. We wanted to play football against Real Madrid and we did so. I believe we will play an entertaining game in front of our fans.

"The result will not be important. Galatasaray's targets never change. If there is a target, then Galatasaray try to achieve it."

The Turks will be without star striker Burak Yilmaz due to suspension, and Terim acknowledged that the former Trabzonspor forward's absence is a big blow. His eight goals are second most in the competition to Cristiano Ronaldo's nine.

"We have lost one of the most important players of Champions League," Terim said. "Today I gave a special permission for Burak Yılmaz to rest, because he will do special training tomorrow. He has not rested since the start of the season so he deserved it."

Klopp: We won't miss our chances again

    255186hp2.jpg

The BVB boss feels his side will improve its effectiveness ahead of the difficult encounter against Manuel Pellegrini's men on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has promised that his side will score when its faces Malaga in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.

The deposed Bundesliga champion missed a number of chances during last week's 0-0 draw at La Rosaleda but the team's boss is confident that there will be no such wastefulness this time around.

"Our big mistake in the first leg was not squandering chances, but how we reacted to it," the 45-year-old told reporters.

"We have to do better than that tomorrow and I believe we will. The atmosphere was really good in Malaga, but I am convinced we can top that tomorrow, and we will need the fans to get behind us."

The former Mainz boss went on to emphasize that his side will not be taking anything for granted when against the Andalusians.

"Everything's set for a good match - including our opponent," he continued. "I have no idea why people think you can just win at Malaga like that. They are a strong opponent, but we are fully in the tie. Those who need guarantees in football should close their eyes for 90 minutes tomorrow."

BVB has been missing Mats Hummels and Jakub Blaszczykowski recently through injury but Klopp is optimistic that both will return to the fold.

"Things are looking positive for the doubtful players, Hummels included," he added.

Neuer: Just one title would be disappointing for Bayern

    270029hp2.jpg

The Roten goalkeeper has urged his side to go for broke in their pursuit of the treble as they prepare to face Juventus on Wednesday.Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says his club would be "disappointed" if it only wins one title this season after its Bundesliga triumph on Saturday.

The Bavarians are still in the hunt for a historic treble with a Champions League quarterfinal clash with Juventus on Wednesday and a Pokal semifinal against Wolfsburg next week.

"It's been a very good season for us, up until now. We can be proud of our display in the domestic league," the 27-year-old told Kicker. "However, if we're left with only one title at the end, we will be disappointed. We have very high aspirations and learned [last year] how it feels to leave a season empty handed."

He added, "The extra motivation we pulled [from that experience] helped us. The solidarity and everything that has developed in the team was good for us. Of course we know we have an important match ahead of us on Wednesday, but we're also allowed to be humans and enjoy the moment. For me, it's crucial to focus on the two other tournaments [Champions League and DFB-Pokal]."

Hazard defends Torres - 'People expect 10 goals from him every game

    226043hp2.jpg

The Chelsea forward says he has been impressed by the Spaniard's form this season and his ability to deal with the constant criticism.

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has defended Fernando Torres and believes the Spaniard has received more criticism than he deserves for his form this season.

Torres is the Blues' top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions in 2012-13 but has only found the target seven times in the Premier League.

His form has frequently come under scrutiny since his 50 million pound move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool, but Hazard believes Chelsea has two "top-class" strikers in Torres and Demba Ba.

Ba has bagged 15 goals in the top flight so far this campaign but only two have come for his new club since his January move from Newcastle.

"[Torres] must be one of the most criticized football players in the world, yet he keeps the good work going," Hazard told The Sun. "I'm impressed.

"People expect 10 goals from him every game. We are lucky to have two top-class forwards with him and Demba Ba. We must make the most of them."

Tottenham must return to winning ways, says Dawson

    243422hp2.jpg

The England defender praised the team's character following its late comeback against Everton but says that the club needs to start picking up victories to finish in the top four.

Tottenham captain Michael Dawson says the team needs to return to winning ways if it is to cement a place in the top four this season.

A 2-2 draw with Everton on Sunday prevented Spurs from leapfrogging Chelsea into third and the two are now level on points – though Chelsea has played a game less.

Tottenham started brightly, scoring in the opening minute before an Everton rally almost saw the Toffees leave White Hart Lane with all three points until Gylfi Sigurdsson equalized late.

"We showed good character to come back," Dawson told talkSPORT. "We had chances. We hit the bar and at 2-2 we thought we could go on and win it."

He added, "It's always a tough game [against Everton]. David Moyes has a good team there that work their socks off. We'll take the point after being down but we've got to get back to winning ways."

Spurs’ next Premier League game is at home to champion Manchester City, which ran out a 5-1 winner at White Hart Lane last season, and Dawson has called for a much better performance this time round.

"It was our first home game [last season]," Dawson stated. "It was an awful start. We're going to have to be at it [to beat them]."

Mourinho: My future does not depend on La Decima

The Real Madrid boss has insisted that whether he stays at the club will not be affected by its pursuit of a 10th Champions League title.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has claimed that his future at the club does not depend on whether it wins the Champions League.http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/turkey/574/galatasaray

The Portuguese coach has been widely linked with a summer exit from the club after a disappointing Liga campaign, but the 50-year-old Mourinho has his quest to lead the club to its 10th European title has nothing to do with his future plans.

"All teams are here to win," Mourinho said at a press conference in the build-up to Tuesday's quarterfinal second leg against Galatasaray. "My future has nothing to do with whether we win the Champions League or not."

Madrid hold a 3-0 lead from the first leg against Gala, but Mourinho went on to warn his players that the tie is not over.

"We have not won anything yet. It's true that we have a good result from the first leg, but there's still a difficult game to play," Mourinho said. "We must remain focused if we want to go through to the semi finals, the 3-0 does not guarantee anything.

"We are also preparing from a tactical point of view. I hope the message is reaching its targets. I would be quite surprised if I don't see my men ready to play a highly difficult game."

Mourinho also voiced his belief with his side would be able to deal with the raucous atmosphere in the Turk Telekom Arena.

"We expect a sold-out stadium with a very intense environment tomorrow. Although the fans could be intimidating, me and my players thrive in that kind of atmosphere," Mourinho said. "My players are accustomed to these environments. We must be calm and do our job."

"If we lose 2-0 or 3-1 tomorrow, even though we will progress, I won't return home a happy man. I want my team to win."
