Wolfsburg 3-3 Borussia Dortmund: Reus rescues sloppy Schwarzgelben with late double

    267750hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund produced a miraculous comeback to avoid defeat in its Champions League preparations, scoring two late goals to earn a 3-3 draw with Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena.

Sven Bender had given Jurgen Klopp's men an early lead but the Wolves responded in remarkable fashion as Ivan Perisic scored twice against his former club before Naldo smashed in a third before half-time.

The visitors had been made to pay for some sloppy defending but Marco Reus refused to give up and brought his side back from the dead with two late goals earning a point to ensure his side finish the season as runners-up.

Wolfsburg started brightly and were perhaps unfortunate to fall behind to BVB's first attack with just five minute played. Reus' short free kick was swung into the box by Nuri Sahin and Bender eluded his marker at the back post to poke the ball across goal and inside the far corner.

The hosts remained positive, though, and were not behind for long as a tidy move saw them restore parity nine minutes later. Makoto Hasebe released Ivica Olic inside the area who then showed great intelligence to roll the ball to the back post with his first touch, enabling Perisic to add a simple finish.

Robert Lewandowski hesitated when presented with a chance to regain Dortmund's advantage soon after and it proved extremely costly as Dieter Hecking's side struck twice in quick succession.

With 22 minutes on the clock Perisic was afforded too much time 25 yards from goal and his effort took a wicked deflection off Diego, wrong-footing the idle Roman Weidenfeller and dropping into the net.

It only took another four minutes for Wolfsburg to send the home fans into raptures with a third. Felipe Santana failed to stay close to Naldo from a corner, leaving the towering center back with space to bring down Jan Polak's flick on and rifle the ball past the keeper.

The BVB defense was having a torrid afternoon and Santana came desperately close to making it even worse when his header came back off the frame of his own goal.

Minutes before the break the Brazilian would have breathed a sigh of relief as, after failing to pick up Olic's run, the striker sent the ball wide of the post after an exquisite pass from Ricardo Rodriguez.

Klopp introduced Jakub Blaszczykowski and Julian Schieber for the second half and BVB instantly looked more threatening. However, Diego Benaglio produced a fine stop to keep out Lewandowski three minutes after the break.

Despite Dortmund's fluency beginning to grow, the Wolves proved dangerous on the break and so there was a sense that the next goal would be key. Polak and Schieber both had opportunities to swing momentum the way of their respective sides before the hour mark, but neither could hit the target.

The visitors' energy levels soon decreased as a compact, stout Wolfsburg defense repelled the ball time and again.

But Dortmund conjured up the same spirit which saw them past Malaga en route to the Champions League final, with Reus spearheading a dramatic comeback.

After latching onto a brilliant pass from Gundogan and looping an effort over an indecisive Benaglio in the 84th minute, Reus grabbed a second with two minutes of normal time remaining as he danced into the area and slammed an effort in off the crossbar.

The point ensures that BVB finishes the season in second position, despite falling 22 points behind Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich 3-0 Augsburg: Resounding win for die Roten in Heynckes' final home game

    279392hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich recorded the 28th win of its extraordinary Bundesliga season with a 3-0 victory over Bavarian rivals Augsburg.

Thomas Muller got the first goal of a slow, end of season encounter, heading home with just over 20 minutes to play and Xherdan Shaqiri made the points safe soon after before Luiz Gustavo added insult to injury just before fulltime.

The first half was a drab affair. While Augsburg perhaps went into the clash expecting nothing, Bayern had a fairly slack attitude, with their title long since wrapped up and two finals on the horizon.

That said, the hosts could easily have gone ahead after just a matter of minutes. Arjen Robben's cross found Muller, who got in a header, but Alex Manninger got himself behind the ball to make a point-blank block.

It was Augsburg who threatened next, with Tobias Werner latching on to a lofted through-ball, squaring up to Manuel Neuer, who got off his line brilliantly to narrow the angle and make the save.

Franck Ribery was looking ever-more dangerous down the Bayern left and left the visitors' defence in pieces just before the 20-minute mark, firing in a great cross from the left which found Mario Mandzukic, who looked to have found the net, only for Manninger to keep the ball out with his face.

Bayern was dominating possession but Augsburg remained a threat on the break and could have had a penalty when Javi Martinez appeared to catch Ji Dong-Won just inside the box, but the referee waved away appeals, much to the relief of the Spaniard.

Ribery had an effort blocked just before the break as a workmanlike showing from the relegation candidates ensured parity at half-time.

Bayern went out with more intent after the interval and could have had two goals through Bastian Schweinsteiger within five minutes of the restart.

First, the Germany vice-captain bent a free kick over the wall but inches wide of Manninger's post before he was picked out by Muller on the edge of the box and sent a shot straight at the former Juventus keeper.

At the other end, meanwhile, Markus Weinzierl's side had a couple of sights of goal. Werner met a brilliant cross from Andre Hahn at the far post but sent his shot into the ground and over the bar.

Minutes later, Ji took a dig from distance which took a massive deflection off a Bayern defender but, with Neuer completely beaten, cannoned off the top of the bar when it looked to be heading in.

Despite Augsburg's chances Bayern were looking to be more of a threat with every passing minute. Robben went on a trademark run into the box but could only shoot into the side-netting before a superb header from Ragnar Klavan denied Mandzukic a certain goal.

And the first goal finally arrived with 22 minutes to spare. An over-hit cross came to Dante on the left-hand side and the former Borussia Monchengladbach man whipped in a ball to Muller, who headed unmarked beyond Manninger.

Moments later, Ribery held off a couple of challenges as he ran into the box before squaring it to Shaqiri, who was able to turn and pass the ball into the bottom corner to wrap up the points.

The third duly arrived three minutes from time, with Ribery cutting it back for Luiz Gustavo on the edge of the box and the Brazilian drove an effort beyond Manninger, who got a hand to the ball but could not take the gloss off a resounding win.

Sneijder ready to see out career at Galatasaray

    271883_heroa.jpg

The Dutch midfielder has revealed his desire to stay in Istanbul after expressing his delight with how his spell with the Turkish champions has unfolded since January
Wesley Sneijder has announced his intention to see out the remainder of his career with Galatasaray.

The attacking midfielder joined Cimbom from Inter in the January transfer window and, after a slow start to his spell in Turkey, has proceeded to feature against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals, before claiming his first Super Lig title.

And in the wake of his side's championship success, Sneijder underlined how he has grown accustomed to life in Istanbul, despite initial reservations, to the extent he is contemplating the idea of residing in the city once he has retired from football.

"I don't usually struggle to settle wherever I go but I really feel welcome here. [Didier] Drogba also feels the same. We are a big family here at Galatasaray," the 28-year-old told Sabah.

"I was speaking about this with my wife the other day, I haven't experienced this kind of love at either [Real] Madrid or [Inter] Milan and I could really see myself living the rest of my life in Istanbul.

"I have always aimed to play for the best clubs in the world - Galatasaray are one of them. I have lots of Turkish friends in football and they introduced me to Turkish football so I knew all about Galatasaray.

"I had no question marks over Galatasaray. The only thing I was unsure about was the Turkish league - whether it was strong or competitive enough.

"However, after my first game I found out just how tough the league is. Every team raise their game against us and always put up a challenge."

The Netherlands international also praised Galatasaray's fans as being among the best he has ever played in front of.

"First of all I want to say that I will always have the utmost respect for Inter fans," Sneijder added.

"But words can't explain what it's like to play in front of Galatasaray fans. It's not something that can be described but something you can only experience.

"I've never seen anything like it and I don't think there is anything that comes close. The supporters really are incredible, the chants, the banners, the choreography is just amazing.

"I want to invite everyone I know to experience the atmosphere here."

Porto 2-1 Benfica: Last-gasp Kelvin winner puts Pereira's men on brink of title
    279558hp2.jpg

It was heartbreak in Oporto Benfica, as it was denied a draw against Porto in the final minute, Kelvin swooping to seal a 2-1 win.

The away team could have confirmed the title on Saturday after Lima took the lead, but an own goal from Maxi Pereira and the substitute's heroics ensured a Dragao victory and it is the hosts who go top for the last game of the season.

In desperate need of victory to keep alive its dream of a third-consecutive Primeira Liga title, Porto started the match on the front foot and looked to hurt its rival early on. This ambitious attitude almost paid dividends in the opening exchanges; a strong run by Danilo down the right ended in the Brazilian shooting for the far corner, and his low effort just eluded Jackson who was bearing down on goal.

Benfica, two points ahead of the Dragao and Europa League finalist, was content to soak up the pressure and look to hit on the break and from set pieces. With 26 minutes gone, they took a surprise lead. Eduardo Salvio's corner was headed back into the direction of Ezequiel Garay who launched the ball back towards goal with a speculative shot. The defender's effort was heading wide, but Lima was on hand to turn home at the far post and put the visitors ahead.

It was the perfect start for the league leader, but the advantage was not to last long as Porto fought back just minutes later. Good work from Alex Sandro down the left opened up the flank for Silvestre Varela, who had space and fired into the box. His cross took a decisive deflection off Maxi Pereira and the Uruguay international watched in horror as his touched spiralled the ball past Artur and into the net at the near post.

The equalizer raised tensions in the match, and tackles started flying in from both sides as the encounter started to lose its early rhythm. Chances were sporadic and without too much danger, and at half time the draw was probably fair on both teams as Portugal's finest entered the dressing rooms.

Varela was enjoying himself after playing such a crucial part in the Dragao strike, and showed his skills in the opening minutes of the second half when he turned Maxi inside out before firing just over the bar. Porto continued to press hard in search of victory, while Benfica resumed its tight, counterattacking game and refused to commit too many forward.

There were plenty of half-chances and forays into the box for the home team, but Benfica refused to buckle and stayed solid. Martinez almost latched on to a teasing low cross from Varela, but Artur was attentive and threw himself to the ground to deny the Colombian. But in the final minute, substitute Kelvin appeared to smash home Porto's winner, putting it in the driving seat amid scenes of chaos.

Thanks to a superior goal difference, Benfica needs to better its rival's result in their last game, at home to Moreirense, to take the title.

Espanyol 1-1 Real Madrid: Mediocre MerenEspanyol 1-1 Real Madrid: Mediocre Merengues hand Barcelona Liga titlegues hand Barcelona Liga title
    279039hp2.jpg

Real Madrid conceded the Liga championship to Barcelona after failing to beat the Catalan team's city rival Espanyol in a 1-1 draw at the Cornella-El Prat.

With one eye on the Copa del Rey final, Jose Mourinho named a weakened side and it fell behind to los Periquitos midway through the first half when Christian Stuani broke the deadlock. Gonzalo Higuain equalized before the hour mark but Madrid failed to turn possession into goals, leaving with just one point and thus gifting the title to Barca.

In a low-key start to proceedings, an Angel di Maria effort that was comfortably saved by Kiko Casilla in the 11th minute was the only real effort on target during the early exchanges.

It seemed as though the slow start had dulled the wits of los Blancos and in the 23rd minute they conceded the game's first goal.

Sergio Garcia stopped Joan Verdu's corner from going behind, wrapping his foot around the ball and cutting back into the center where Stuani waited to divert the ball into the back of the net.

The Uruguayan should have added a second four minutes later as he raced behind the defense to meet Verdu's pass. He let the ball run across him before attempting to poke it into the corner, but Diego Lopez stayed big and got his body in the way.

Madrid continued to struggle to assert themselves on the game, with Hector Moreno seeing a seemingly legitimate goal ruled out for an ambiguous foul in the area.

At the other end, Espanyol's well-organized defense remained compact and restricted the chances for los Merengues to produce efforts on Casilla's goal.

Following a very limp showing in the final third during the first half, Mourinho brought on Karim Benzema. However, it was the hosts who threatened first after the interval.

Mubarak Wakaso and Verdu combined brilliantly on the left but Nacho stopped the Ghanaian's cross from finding Garcia at the back post with a crucial interception.

With los Blancos still struggling, Mourinho introduced Cristiano Ronaldo and in the 58th minute Madrid finally found the net. Higuain got in front of Moreno and glanced a header into the far corner, past the despairing keeper.

The game quickly returned to its sluggish tempo as Madrid was unable to harness the momentum that the goal should have given them.

The visitors were in total control of possession but they were unable to translate that into chances to score a winner and Espanyol held on for the final few minutes after Victor Sanchez was shown a red card for a horrible tackle on Higuain.

In failing to win the game, Real Madrid ended its own challenge for the title and must now look to the Copa del Rey for a last chance to win some silverware this campaign.

Mourinho congratulates Barcelona on Liga success

    278209_heroa.jpg

The Portuguese coach offered praise for the new Liga champions, before addressing Raphael Varane's injury and Pepe's exclusion from the team
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho conceded Barcelona deserved the title on Saturday, the night his men handed the Catalans their Liga triumph following a 1-1 draw at Espanyol.

Gonzalo Higuain equalized after the visitors had fallen behind but los Blancos could not build on the Argentine's strike and prolong the inevitability of losing their league crown to the Catalans.

"First of all, I want to congratulate Barcelona, their coaches, their players, their fans," the 50-year-old responded to reporters after the match. "I think the logical thing to do is congratulate them. Last year we won and spoke of a great title achieved, and now I think it makes sense and is the least we can do to give due importance to their achievement.

A portion of the trainer's praise stemmed from efforts to deflect attention away from Pepe, who was dropped from the side after criticizing his compatriot's treatment of captain Iker Casillas.

"You are always talking about a player and it does not seem relevant. The league has a new champion and you're talking about a player. I'm the coach. I don't need to justify anything," Mourinho responded. "From the first to the last day I'll always decide who plays. I have the option of sometimes sharing the reasons for my decisions and other times, not."

The issue was made more pressing with the news that defender Raphael Varane looks likely to miss the Copa del Rey final against neighbors Atletico next Friday, although Mourinho did not appear concerned.

"On Friday, you'll see who plays and that will always be my decision and responsibility. Half my medical staff say Varane will not make the cup final.

"Obviously he cannot be in a game that everyone would want to play, but let's not dramatise because we have solutions. There are alternatives."

Barton: I want to stay at Marseille for the rest of my career

    269601_heroa.jpg

The controversial midfielder, on loan from QPR, wishes to remain with the Ligue 1 outfit and has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity that the club afforded him
QPR midfielder Joey Barton has expressed his desire to see out his career at loan club Marseille and admits he is "truly happy" living and playing in the south of France.

The outspoken midfielder moved to the Ligue 1 club last summer and has made 22 league appearances in a successful season for the side - it secured Champions League football next season with a win in its last game.

Barton cited the negative media coverage directed towards him in England as a reason behind his intention to see out his career in France, with the 30-year-old claiming he will "never forget" the opportunity that Marseille gave him.

"I'm truly happy here, it's a place where I'd like to be for the rest of my career, as long as Marseille want me," he told RMC Sport. "They gave me an opportunity when everyone was very negative about me in England. I'll never forget that."

Marseille's 2-1 victory over Toulouse also ensured that Barton's side's extremely remote chances of winning Ligue 1 are kept alive, though PSG could dash those hopes with a win over Lyon on Sunday.

Roberto Martinez hails match-winner Ben Watson as Wigan turns its attention to Premier League survival

The Spanish boss hailed the impact of the former Crystal Palace midfielder, whose late header secured a historic FA Cup win over Manchester City on Saturday evening Wigan manager Roberto Martinez hailed the special achievement of winning the FA Cup for the first time in the club's history - and immediately targeted “the double” of staying in the Premier League.

The Latics won their first FA Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City thanks to a late header from substitute Ben Watson at Wembley, but remains in danger of relegation from the Premier League.

Wigan is three points off Premier League safety with two games to play ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Arsenal, and Martinez hopes the cup glory can inspire his side to a great escape in the final week of the campaign.

“I believe we can get enough points to stay in the league which for us is like winning the title. We will fight hard to win the double," Martinez said. “Nobody will take away this trophy, the silverware and the proud moment the fans had today. Winning the FA Cup is something special in the English game and I’m very aware of that.

“It’s an incredible achievement, we are in Europe next season and we also need to be in the Barclays Premier League. To move to the next level we need to stay in the Premier League and hopefully we will get the points we need to achieve our aim.”

Goalscorer Watson has only just returned to action after suffering a broken leg against Liverpool in November that was expected to rule him out for the rest of the season, but made a huge impact off the bench.

“I think the whole journey of Wigan with the FA Cup has been with little stories like that,” Martinez added. “Ben Watson broke his leg and the medical department told us he’d be out for the rest of the season.

“He worked really hard, came back, came back at Wembley and scored the winner. I’ve seen movies with worse scripts than that.

“It wasn’t an accident. The proudest thing is we didn’t come in a damage limitation way. You look at the game and to produce that level of performance and be the better side over the course of the game was very pleasing.”

Ancelotti believes Beckham will extend his stay at PSG

The Italian manager has hinted that the former LA Galaxy midfielder could remain at Les Parisiens for another year, though was less sure of his own future at the club
Carlo Ancelotti has again insisted his Paris Saint-Germain future will be decided at the end of the season but hinted that David Beckham could be offered a new contract.

The 53-year-old has been continually quizzed over the identity of his whereabouts next term, with Real Madrid being put forward as his likeliest destination, but so far has refused to comment on any speculation involving his next move.

And speaking ahead of Sunday's match against Olympique Lyonnais, the coach maintained his coy stance, before putting to bed a rumor suggesting he had held talks with Manchester United about replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

"About my future, there is no news. The season is not over yet. There are lots of rumors, but the club and I have agreed to speak at the end of the season. The appointment has been scheduled before next week," said Ancelotti. "That's absolutely not true [in response to claims that he was contacted by Manchester United]. [Sir Alex] Ferguson made a good choice with [David] Moyes. He has done a great job at Everton."

Reports over the weekend claimed that PSG was ready to offer David Beckham a one-year extension to his current contract, and though Ancelotti appeared to be open to the idea, he was less certain over the prospect of bringing AC Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy to the club.

"I think [Beckham] will stay. He is an example to others and always displays a good attitude. He is very professional. He has showed a lot of concentration and quality," he added. "[Regarding El Shaarawy], that's a difficult question to answer. We have not yet talked about the summer market. He is a very good player, though, but AC Milan have invested heavily in him. He is not on our agenda at the moment."

Les Parisiens can wrap up the Ligue 1 title with victory over Lyon on Sunday, and the former Chelsea boss admits the title race in France has "excited" him, while he is hopeful that Leonardo will not be sanctioned for his push on a match referee.
"To win a title in France is very exciting. It's exactly the same as any other trophy. I want to celebrate it with everyone. It is deserved," Ancelotti continued. "Leonardo did not push the referee [against Valenciennes last weekend]. He is experienced and knows his soccer. I hope nothing will happen to him."

:sorry:Manchester United midfielder Scholes to retire at end of season

"Paul will play at Old Trafford on Sunday against Swansea and will collect an unbelievable but well-deserved 11th Premier League medal."Scholes, who retired two years ago only to make a dramatic return six months later, also laid testament to his manager's influence, while he predicted a similarly successful reign for new manager David Moyes.

Adebayor wants to 'kill' Arsenal's hopes of a top-four finish

    229378_heroa.jpg

The former Gunner admitted he no longer cares about the fortunes of his old team and has backed Spurs to qualify for the Champions League at the expense of its rival Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor has insisted that he is ready to "kill" Arsenal's hopes of Champions League football next season and he remains positive that Spurs can finish in the top four.

Andre Villas-Boas' side currently sits a point behind its North London rival with two games remaining following Wednesday's draw against Chelsea, which leaves Champions League qualification in Arsenal's hands.

However, Adebayor, who plied his trade with the Gunners for three years, is adamant that the Gunners will drop points and admitted he no longer cares about the fortunes of his former club.

"My head, my concentration, my focus, my life belongs to Tottenham. Arsenal was a different life. Now, I prefer Tottenham and everything belongs to Tottenham. I don’t care what Arsenal do, what they achieve. That’s not my problem anymore," he told The Mirror. "If I can kill them, I will definitely kill them because we are in a game where you have to do your best for your team. And now I’m in Tottenham, I have to give everything to Tottenham.

"Of course, Arsenal can drop points. Why not? They have dropped points throughout the season and they can drop points again now."

Adebayor, who has scored four goals in 23 appearances for Tottenham this season, also emphasized the importance of retaining the belief that Spurs can qualify for the Champions League and not worrying about their rivals.

"We have two games more and if we talk more about Arsenal and Chelsea, that will kill us. We don’t have a choice, we have to beat Stoke and take six points from our last two games," he continued.

“I don’t see why we can’t finish in the top four this year. We just have to keep the belief alive. No matter what, we have to get into the Champions League and I am positive we will.”
