Chelsea targeting youth, says chief executive Gourlay

    187249_heroa.jpg

A decade after owner Roman Abramovich's investment began the Blues board say they want returning manager Jose Mourinho to bring through the club's younger players Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been told to concentrate on developing young players in what is Roman Abramovich's 10th year as owner, according to chief executive Ron Gourlay.

The focus of bringing instant success to the club has been a burden on each of the nine managers who have worked under Abramovich, meaning youth development has often been neglected.

But with Mourinho back in charge, Gourlay insists focusing on young players is now going to become one of their priorities.

"It has been a hugely successful decade for Chelsea Football Club since Roman Abramovich took control, with an unprecedented number of trophies in the last 10 years," Gourlay told reporters.

"Mr Abramovich’s early investment in playing staff paid dividends in creating a team admired around the world, but to keep Chelsea among the elite we have always known we must produce our own world-class talent and we are beginning to see the benefits of our academy, which will help us meet our long-term objectives for Financial Fair Play."

Meanwhile, Petr Cech believes the 10th anniversary of Abramovich's arrival at Stamford Bridge is further proof that those who questioned the Russian's long-term commitment were misguided.

"At the start people said that he would spend two or three years at Chelsea then would leave," he added.

"However his passion now is the same as when I saw him for the first time and I think that’s something which is precious because you know the club is in good hands."

Chelsea can win 'many titles' next season – Oscar

    275741_heroa.jpg

The young midfielder is excited about his swift progress at Stamford Bridge and explains how his approach to referees has had to adapt from Brazil to the Premier League Chelsea starlet Oscar believes that the club "can win many titles next season".

The 21-year-old is excited about the task of improving upon a "great" first campaign in Blues colours, having featured in a mammoth 64 games on his way to lifting the Europa League.

"I think my time at Chelsea has been great so far," he enthused to The Green Soccer Journal.

"It is my first year in Europe and I was the player with the most appearances for the club, I think. I was involved in every single match. Not too bad for the first season, is it?

"My goals are to keep doing my job for Chelsea and improve [on] what I've done. If I manage to play better, with the help of my team-mates, I think we can win many titles next season."

While the quick, physical nature of the Premier League has come as no surprise, Oscar admits that his approach to officials has had to change.

"I used to watch English football on TV when I was younger in Brazil. I already knew it was a dynamic, competitive and fast way of playing," he observed. "When I got here, I just confirmed all of that. I think I am already adapted to the English game.

"I have changed my behaviour on the pitch in England. Here referees talk to the players all the time. I think it is nice. In Brazil, we have the culture to try to conquer the refs. Here, that is no way to behave.

"In the Premier League, they don't give a foul even when it is a foul. We can't dive or pretend things. I stopped doing it.

"[Ryan] Giggs didn't like it when I put my hand up showing the referee [one of] their players deserved a card. There was no way I could avoid it. It was a clear foul.

"To show a card and tell my opinion to the referee is not something unfair. The respect here between the players is huge and also between players and referees. I don't think I was disrespectful that time."

The Chelsea star admits that the presence of other Brazilian players at Stamford Bridge has been a big factor in his acclimatisation, with the city of London itself an advantage as well.

"Myself, David Luiz, Ramires and Lucas Piazon are very close to each other," he added, "really close indeed. We are building a strong friendship.

"Of course, this is quite helpful for all of us on and off the pitch. At least once a week, we have lunch or dinner together. Our families are always together as well. It is really important I have them around.

"I feel lucky to have come to London as my first home in Europe. Here is just easy to settle down. You can find whatever you like to do. I don't even wish to go to Brazil for holidays – but, during the winter, I miss Brazil a lot."

Agent: Gomez keen on Italy move

    285460_heroa.jpg

The striker's representative has hinted at a move to Serie A as the Germany international wants to leave his current club this summer to get regular first-team football Mario Gomez is keen to leave Bayern Munich for a move to Italy this summer amid strong interest from Fiorentina, according to his agent Uli Ferber.

Ferber insisted last week the Germany international has yet to agree personal terms with the Serie A side, but has now made it clear Gomez would be open to a move to the Italian top flight.

"I hope that the next step will be made in the upcoming few days," Ferber was quoted as saying by Kicker.

"Mario has a preference to go to Italy."

The 27-year-old has a contract with Bayern Munich until June 2016, but is keen to move on after losing his starting berth at the Bavarians to Mario Mandzukic.

The former Stuttgart star has made well over 100 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern in the past four seasons, winning two Bundesliga titles, two DFB Pokals and the Champions League.

Lukaku to stay at Chelsea despite loan offers

    262053_heroa.jpg

The striker has been attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs after a fine season out on loan but will remain at Stamford Bridge after speaking with Jose Mourinho.

Romelu Lukaku is set to stay at Chelsea next season despite interest in the striker from a number of Premier League clubs.

Jose Mourinho has told Lukaku that he wants the Belgian to be part of his squad as the Chelsea manager plots a challenge for the Premier League title next term.

The Blues regret allowing so many players to leave on loan last season, with the squad stretched as they played a total of 69 matches over the course of the campaign.

Lukaku scored 17 league Premier League goals while on loan at West Brom and the 20-year-old is eager for regular first-team football, especially in a World Cup year.

Mourinho is in the market for a top class striker, with Napoli star Edinson Cavani strongly linked to the Londoners, but has no intention of listening to offers for Lukaku this summer.

“He is Jose’s type of player and he wants to take a look at him,” a source told Goal. “He can offer something different and has a similar style to Didier Drogba who Jose loves.”

Lukaku will travel with Chelsea on their pre-season tour despite interest from Everton and Fulham, who has yet to score for the Blues in 12 appearances since his £18 million move in 2011.

Chelsea allowed 27 players to leave on loan during the course of last season and Mourinho wants to make more use of the talent in his squad both domestically and in Europe.

Paulinho confirms he is leaving Corinthians to join Tottenham

    Paulinho_2966300.jpg

Brazil international midfielder Paulinho has confirmed he is leaving Corinthians to join Tottenham in a £17million deal. The player had been widely tipped to leave the Brazilian club for Tottenham upon the completion of the Confederations Cup and it has now been announced he will be on his way.

Paulinho revealed that he had also been a target for Inter Milan but he was happy to be making the move to Spurs."The other interest we got was of Inter Milan, but the only offer came from Tottenham," he told a press conference."The proposal came, we sat down, analysed it and decided. It was a big decision to go to a big club. There comes a certain point when you need new challenges."

He also used the occasion to thank Corinthians fans for their support, adding: "It's hard to say anything at a moment like this, but I am sure those were three wonderful years in my career, with many titles."What I have to say to Corinthians fans, board and staff is 'see you soon' - I will be back in no time, due to everything they have done for me.

"My individual titles are all thanks to the club, Corinthians will be in my heart for the rest of my life."Corinthians director of football Roberto de Andrade reciprocated those warm remarks about the popular 24-year-old.

He said: "I want to thank Paulinho for everything he has done for Corinthians.
"We will never forget him - the great person he is - and his national team title (the Confederations Cup with Brazil) is well-deserved."Corinthians are proud for having had a player like him. It's fair he continues his life at an English club, to know a new culture."

    Recopa

There had been speculation that Paulinho could be involved in the Recopa Sudamericana (equivalent of the UEFA Super Cup) games against Sao Paulo, the first leg being on Wednesday.

But Paulinho has confirmed that although he would relish the chance to sign off with another trophy, he must now focus on Tottenham."I will not play in the Recopa because there are contractual requirements of Tottenham which cannot be discussed here," he added.

"It was a decision that we all respect. Of course, I had a huge desire to win another title but the transfer has to be completed."

    Liverpool complete Kolo Toure signing

    213330_heroa.jpg

The 32-year-old has joined the Anfield outfit on a free transfer following the conclusion of his Manchester City contract, becoming Brendan Rodgers' fourth summer signing Liverpool have confirmed the signing of former Manchester City centre-back Kolo Toure on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old spent four years at the Etihad Stadium after leaving Arsenal in a €14 million deal, but made just 13 appearances last term and was excluded from the club's Champions League squad.

Toure arrives at Anfield having won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during an 11-year stay in England, and the Ivorian says Liverpool's stature in the game made the move an easy decision.

"This means a lot to me," Toure told the club's official website.

"Firstly, I'm joining one of the best clubs in England. When I left City it was important for me to stay in England because it's the best league - and to join Liverpool is massive for me.

"I chose Liverpool because of the history and because of the spirit of the team and the people here."

Toure becomes Liverpool's fourth signing of a busy transfer window so far following the arrivals of forwards Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The centre-back joins the club following veteran Jamie Carragher's retirement at the end of last season.

    Gotze reveals Hummels apology

    292832_heroa.jpg

The Germany international says his now former club team-mate has said sorry for criticising his move to the Allianz Arena Mario Gotze has revealed Mats Hummels has apologised for questioning his move to Bayern Munich after he was unveiled by the Bavarians on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old's decision to leave Borussia Dortmund and join arch-rivals Bayern, after the Bundesliga champions met his €37 million release clause, sent shockwaves through German football back in April.

And though the dust has settled somewhat in the months that have passed, that didn't stop BVB centre-back and Gotze's now former team-mate Mats Hummels from suggesting the move was motivated by money last Thursday.

However, the midfielder insists their relationship remains a good one and was keen to put the matter to bed as he was presented to the media.

"I read what was said. Mats apologised to me in person. There is nothing more to add," he told reporters.

Gotze's arrival sees him become coach Pep Guardiola's first signing at the Allianz Arena since taking over from predecessor Jupp Heynckes.

And he admitted he has already spoken to the Spaniard, while adding that the allure of joining the treble winners was just too great to resist.

"He [Guardiola] asked me how I am and when I will be fit again and if I feel comfortable here. It was important to me, to speak with the coach for the first time," he continued.

"I am just happy to be here. Sportingly, it is the right way for me. It was important to me, to start something new. It is the whole package."

The Germany international was forced to sit out the Champions League final between now former employers Dortmund and Bayern because of a hamstring injury, with Gotze targeting a swift return to action.

"I have do adapt to new surroundings, new team-mates, a new coach and a different philosophy. First, I have do do my rehabilitation. Then it is my claim to reach goals with this team and play good football."

Gotze has signed a four-year-deal with Bayern until the summer of 2017.

    Llorente targets Juventus title hat-trick

    292846_heroa.jpg

The Spain striker laughed off question marks over his readiness for the season ahead at his official unveiling with the Italian champions Fernando Llorente says he is 100 per cent fit and looking forward to leading Juventus' charge for a third straight Scudetto and further European glory.

The Spain striker has signed a four-year contract with the Turin giants after an unsettling final season with Athletic Bilbao, in which he started only four Liga games due to a dispute with coach Marcelo Bielsa.

But the 28-year-old insists he is physically and mentally ready to spearhead the Juve attack as Antonio Conte's men go in search of more major honours after claiming back-to-back Serie A titles.

"Physically I feel very well," said the Bosman free signing at his official unveiling on Tuesday. "I have worked very hard during my holidays and now I am ready to work even harder in the future.

"Over the last two years I have still done a lot of physical training even when I have played much less. I know Italian football is very difficult, but I am sure I will be able to do well."

The World Cup winner also stressed his delight in joining the Italian champions, explaining that Juve were the sole attraction in his move.

"I decided to come to Italy because this is where Juventus play! I chose to play for Juve because they are a great team, and it is a dream for me to play here. I want to develop as a player and I have chosen the best team with which to do that.

"I have spoken a few times with Antonio Conte and I'm very happy to be able to play under him. Juve played wonderful football last season and deserved to win the Scudetto. Now I want to help the team win and achieve the feat of a third consecutive title. The Champions League, though, is a difficult competition and we must take one step at a time."

Llorente's unveiling comes days after the club confirmed the arrival from Manchester City of Carlos Tevez as Juventus add to an already star-studded squad, and the Spaniard was quick to point out one player in particular he is looking to join forces with.

"I hope that Andrea Pirlo can help me to develop as a player," he said. "I admire champions like Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet too, and the fans' welcome was incredible. They are fantastic. I would like to thank them and say that I am very happy."

The Spain international will wear the No.14 shirt with his new club.
