Carvalho plays down Monaco title hopes

    300068_heroa.jpg

AS Monaco defender Ricardo Carvalho has played down his side's chances of mounting a challenge for the Ligue 1 title next season.

Claudio Ranieri's side have stunned the continent with their summer spending to date, splashing out upwards of €120 million on the likes of Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez.

Ranieri himself acknowledged that the Principality club would struggle to usurp Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the standings in France this season, and Carvalho - who also moved to Stade Louis II this summer - believes a top-four finish is their realistic target.

"We want to be ambitious, but we will most likely finish third or fourth," he told Le Parisien.

"Paris already have a very competitive team in place. Monaco have just begun. There will also be other good teams, but we need to grow as a collective. We will have to try to win our games.

"PSG remain the favourites. I hope to see us finish behind them."

Carvalho went on to express his excitement at being part of the Monaco "adventure" and believes his experience - along with that of former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal - will be important to the side in the coming campaign.

"This is a new adventure," he continued. "There are several Portuguese in the group and numerous other Spanish speakers. It makes adapting easier. Everything is fine for me.

"Abidal a great player. He holds a lot of experience, like me. He will have his work to do and I have mine."

Monaco commence their Ligue 1 compaign with a match against Bordeaux on August 10.

No bad blood between me and Mourinho, insists Moyes

    297756_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes has rejected talk of a feud between himself and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese has been perceived to be engaging in mind-games over the Blues' summer pursuit of Wayne Rooney, with his latest statement suggesting that Chelsea would not have to sell anyone in order to buy the England striker.

However, Moyes insists there is no bad blood between the two, while he also praised his opposite number for his past achievements in the Premier League.

"Jose Mourinho is a tremendous manager," Moyes told reporters. "He has done really well in the Premier League.

"Like me, he started doing his coaching badges in Scotland and, whilst I wouldn't say I know him that well, I do know him."

The Scot also revealed that his admiration for Mourinho went so far that he wrote the Portuguese a letter after his first spell as Chelsea boss ended in 2008.

"I remember when he lost his job I wrote him a letter," he explained, "so for people to say there is any feud is wrong.

"Of course, you are going to find two really competitive managers. When our teams play we will both be highly committed to make sure our clubs win but I admire him for how well he has done as a manager."

    Tottenham agree €30m Soldado deal

    259918_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have agreed to pay the release clause of Roberto Soldado and will complete a €30 million deal for the Valencia striker this week.

Spurs' sporting director Franco Baldini was in Valencia last week to discuss a move for the 28-year-old forward, but the Londoners saw a bid of €26m plus add-ons turned down by the Liga outfit.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had hoped to sign the striker for less than his €30m clause, but Spurs moved quickly as late interest from Liverpool emerged and Baldini agreed a deal via telephone with Valencia president Amadeo Salvo on Saturday.

New Che coach Miroslav Djukic had been keen to keep Soldado, but was resigned to losing the striker last night. "If his exit to Tottenham is confirmed, we will wish him all the luck in the world," the Serb said after his side lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the opening game of the ICC Cup.

Soldado did not take part in that match after returning from an extended holiday on Saturday morning, having participated in the Confederations Cup with Spain last month. The former Real Madrid striker arrived at training at the same time as his coach in the morning and later watched the game alongside team-mate and friend Victor Ruiz in the VIP area at Mestalla.

"I spoke with Roberto this morning. He is a great professional and he will be a huge loss if he leaves," Djukic added on Saturday.

Personal terms between Spurs and Soldado have been agreed, with the striker (who rejected a transfer to White Hart Lane last summer) now keen to move to a more ambitious side.

The two clubs will now settle on how the fee will be paid. Valencia want two payments of €15m, while Tottenham are keen to spread the outlay over several installments.

Former Valencia director Antonio Sese also hinted that a deal had been struck as he wrote on Twitter: "They tell me that Roberto Soldado will be transferred shortly. They (Tottenham) will pay the release clause. Great management."

Valencia missed out on Champions League football as they finished fifth in La Liga last term and need to recoup funds to pay wages, as well as spiralling debts which have seen the club suspend construction of their Nou Mestalla stadium.

With Soldado on the way out, the Costa Blanca club have agreed a deal to bring in former Spurs striker Helder Postiga from Zaragoza for around €3m, but also hope to sign another forward this summer.

Soldado has scored 81 goals in 141 appearances since joining Valencia in the summer of 2010 as a replacement for David Villa.

Gareth Bale is furious at Tottenham for turning down Real Madrid's 82M pound bid for him and is refusing to play.

Gareth Bale missed his club's pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Saturday - and cannot see himself wearing the white of Tottenham again.

Manager Andre Villas Boas has diplomatically put the Welshman's absence from this week's Barclays Asia Trophy tournament down to a muscle strain. But the reality is that the player is physically fit to play - but mentally shattered. [Daily Mail]

Gareth Bale has urged Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to keep his promise and allow him to move to Real Madrid. Spurs told the winger they'd listen to offers if they missed out on Champions League football and he's keen to make the move to La Liga.

Gareth Bale 'frustrated by Spurs' stance'

    garethbaletottenham_576x324.jpg

Gareth Bale is said to be deeply unhappy with the Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy, over his refusal to hold talks over a transfer to Real Madrid.

ESPN FC was told at the weekend that Spurs had yet to respond to Madrid’s €100 million (£86.3 million) bid for Bale, and The Guardian reports that the Wales international has been left “distraught” by the club’s refusal to consider the offer, which exceeds the record £80 million fee the Spanish club paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.The Times, meanwhile, says the 24-year-old believed that, when committing to a new contract at White Hart Lane last year, he had a “gentleman’s agreement” with Levy that he would be allowed to depart should such a sizeable bid arrive. Madrid are apparently keen for him to submit a formal transfer request.

Bale’s contract is due to expire in 2016 and Spurs have stressed on numerous occasions over the summer that the player will not be sold, but head coach Andre Villas-Boas — who had last week insisted the player was "not for sale at any price" — sounded less defiant on the subject over the weekend."I don't want to comment on anything like that," Villas-Boas said. "I cannot speak about anything."Pressed as to whether Bale had asked to leave, he replied: “I cannot speak about this.”

Spurs have become renowned for their stubborn approach to the market in recent years as the likes of Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Luka Modric have pressed for moves, but David Pleat, who had previously worked under Levy as Tottenham’s director of football, believes the club will have to consider a world-record fee.

"I don’t think there’s panic at the club," Pleat said in The Times. "The press were talking £50 million, £60 million this summer. This could rise to something crazy like £100 million, which would blow any club out of the water. Even Tottenham, who have resisted strongly, may have to look at it. Manchester United couldn’t resist it for Ronaldo."

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy ‘cuts holiday short to hold talks with Gareth Bale over future’

    ay114341222football-swind-e1374913511707.jpg

The Daily Mail claims Levy was originally planning to jet from Hong Kong, where Spurs where playing in the Asia Trophy, to Florida but instead flew to London on Sunday as speculation over Bale’s future intensifies.Tottenham arrive back in London today, with the squad scheduled to resume training on Wednesday ahead of a Saturday friendly away at Monaco.

Bale is now thought to be intent on leaving White Hart Lane and, therefore, disillusioned that Levy snubbed a world-record bid of between £81million and £86m for his services.Real are ready to test Levy’s resolve again with an offer closer to £100m, which could take the form of a player-plus-cash deal involving winger Angel Di Maria and defender-cum-midfielder Fabio Coentrao.

Levy, though, is determined to hang onto Bale and held informal talks with the Welsh superstar in Hong Kong.Bale did not train or play in those matches because of a gluteal injury – although some observers interpretedg his non-involvement as a sign that he was moving nearer the Spurs exit door.

Deciphering the truth in one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas has been made all the more difficult by a concerted propaganda campaign by Madrid-biased newspaper Marca to unsettle Bale. And this week Bale will demand to know from Levy the exact nature of Real’s offer, with the prospect of the former Southampton man handing in a written transfer request becoming an increasing possibility.

Levy, however, will hope to convince Bale that the imminent capture of Roberto Soldado from Valencia is yet further proof of the club’s ambitions following the signings of Paulinho and Nacer Chadli.Bale has three years left on his current deal and Levy will have to significantly up his £80-000-per-week wages if he is to fend off Real’s advances.
