Manchester United 1-3 Sevilla: Moyes' men stunned by Spaniard's in Ferdinand's testimonial

    304079_heroa.jpg

David Moyes’ Old Trafford career has got off to a losing start as Sevilla picked up a 3-1 win against Manchester United in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial.

The Spanish side scored twice in five minutes in the first half to take a 2-0 lead thanks to Vitolo and Marko Marin, with the visitors well worth the two-goal advantage.

    article-0-1B38FCA3000005DC-539_634x426.jpg

United came back with a little more purpose after half-time and pulled a goal back through Antonio Valencia, but they were unable to get a second as Sevilla’s backline generally remained solid and highly-rated Chilean Bryan Rabello sealed the win in stoppage time.

Moyes named an unfamiliar-looking side for his Old Trafford debut as Angelo Henriquez, Fabio, Alex Buttner and Adnan Januzaj all started, while man-of-the-moment Ferdinand featured at the back alongside Chris Smalling.

    article-0-1B3900F1000005DC-133_634x471.jpg

Sevilla – who have already played competitive football this season – came to Old Trafford fresh from a 6-1 win over Mladost Podgorica in Montenegro on Thursday night, but recognisable faces such as Gary Medel, Geoffrey Kondogbia and on-loan Chelsea man Marko Marin appeared from the beginning.

In true testimonial fashion the match began at a fairly slow speed and Sevilla started brighter, with United fielding a weakened, but the early touches of Belgian 18-year-old Januzaj caught the eye.

    article-0-1B39096A000005DC-819_634x426.jpg

Unai Emery’s men clearly came to Old Trafford intending to spoil the party and they took the lead in the 21st minute as Diego Perotti fed a pass into the area between Ferdinand and Smalling, leaving Vitolo with the simple objective of poking the ball past David De Gea.

The La Liga side were starting to cut United open at will and made it 2-0 four minutes later. Carlos Bacca and Vitolo combined on the edge of the area before the winger rolled the ball across the face of the goal for Marin to tap in.

Both sides had an excellent chance just prior to the 40th minute as first Shinji Kagawa’s header was saved a point-blank range by Beto, and then Marin’s low effort was forced onto the crossbar by De Gea, keeping the score at 2-0 going into the break.

The second half began as a much tighter affair with both sides creating few chances in the first 10 minutes, although Januzaj did work a good opening and shot over from inside the area.

United noticeably increased the tempo and looked at their most threatening as the hour mark approached, while Sevilla sat back and invited pressure despite Bacca’s best efforts in attack.

With around 25 minutes remaining Januzaj took centre stage again and beat young Sevilla defender Israel Puerto down the left before hammering a low cross into the danger area for Antonio Valencia to knock into an empty goal.

In the 75th minute substitute Jesse Lingard almost connected with a low Wilfried Zaha cross at the far post, while subsequent efforts from Buttner and Michael Carrick failed to get through a sea of Sevilla defenders.

An equaliser for United looked inevitable leading up to stoppage time as Zaha burst away from two opponents on the edge of the area, but he could only shoot wide of the post and Bryan Rabello confirmed the win for Sevilla, scoring a third after excellent play by Kevin Gameiro.

Pellegrini: Manchester City squad is best in England

    296201_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini feels the club's summer business has turned his squad into the best in the Premier League.

The Chilean took over at City in July following the sacking of Roberto Mancini after the club finished last season without winning a trophy.

Pellegrini has bolstered an already impressive squad with the signings of Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic at a combined cost of close to €100 million - and is now keen for a positive start to the season.

"I think we have the best squad in England,” said Pellegrini, speaking at a question and answer session with supporters on Thursday.

"We bought four important players, we already had a very good team and with these four players I think we improved a lot.

"We hope that from the first match against Newcastle at home we will start winning, and we will try to bring another trophy here."

City host Newcastle on August 19 before facing newly promoted duo Cardiff and Hull City on August 25 and 31, respectively.

Rooney has heart set on Chelsea

    waynerooneybenchchelsea_576x324.jpg

Wayne Rooney’s camp have informed Arsenal that the player has made up his mind to join Chelsea, sources close to the negotiations have told ESPN.

With the pursuit of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez reaching an exceptionally tense impasse, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has attempted to keep the Rooney option open as he seeks to bring in a forward.Although the Manchester United man is understood to have made his huge admiration of Wenger clear to him, Rooney is determined to join Chelsea and team up with Jose Mourinho, something Arsenal have been notified of.

At the moment, however, the prospects of that remain slim. United are steadfast in their refusal to sell the England international and it is understood the club may attempt a more conciliatory approach in order to keep him happy.

The developments could leave Arsenal forced to turn their attention even further afield, given that Anfield sources have maintained that Liverpool owner John Henry’s comments on Thursday were no mere negotiating ploy.In a stance that is said to be even more hardline than United’s attitude to selling Rooney, Liverpool officials are unequivocal about not selling the Uruguayan to another English club. One Anfield insider cited how it would be tantamount to ceding the race for fourth before the season has even begun.

United, meanwhile, are re-assessing their options as the club’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas appears to have terminally stalled. Widely reported approaches for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines are expected to be made in the next week, with manager David Moyes considering his next move as regards to bringing in a Fabregas-type player.

The former Everton boss is known to have been happily surprised by the progress of 25-year-old Anderson in training and pre-season games, but still feels the club may need to bring in an all-rounder, even beyond Fellaini.

    Liverpool plan Suarez return

    luissuarezstressed_576x324.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says Luis Suarez will come to accept that he is not going to be sold this summer. The striker has given three newspapers interviews this week stating his belief that he has a legal right to leave Anfield if a bid of more than £40 million is submitted.

Liverpool, though, have turned down two bids from Arsenal for Suarez, and say there is no release clause in his contract -- a view backed by Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive Gordon Taylor, whose organisation has attempted to mediate in the dispute. Both Rodgers and principal owner John W Henry have said this week that the club have no intention of selling Suarez. And the striker has been told to train alone after more than two months of publicly seeking a move from Anfield.

At a press conference ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Celtic in Dublin, Rodgers said: "Luis has fought for his life for Liverpool. There will come a point where he'll recognise the club is not going to sell -- and then he goes on to the pitch and he'll give 100%."Luis is training on his own and he understands totally where we're coming from."It's been a difficult period for him but it's my job to protect the group. Once he's back with the spirit, he'll rejoin the group.

"We’re quite calm. The club is in control of the situation. We've got no inclination to sell and we've been strong on that."He's a world-class striker. I've got no question that when he’s back, he’ll have a similar impact to last season."

Suarez, who arrived from Ajax for £22.8 million in January 2011, has three years to run on a contract he signed in 2012.He was Liverpool’s leading scorer with 30 goals last season, but missed the final four games after being handed a 10-match domestic ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League fixture in April.

Assuming Liverpool win their Capital One Cup second-round tie home tie against League One side Notts County on August 27, Suarez would be able to make his return for Rodgers in the third round, in the week commencing September 23.

He would then be eligible to make his Premier League return at Sunderland on September 29.Meanwhile, centre-back Daniel Agger has been appointed Liverpool's new vice-captain.The 28-year-old, signed from Brondby in 2006, replaces the retired Jamie Carragher as Steven Gerrard’s deputy.

Cocu excited by Milan Champions League challenge

    300830_heroa.jpg

PSV will have to beat AC Milan if they are to reach the Champions League - a prospect that excites coach Phillip Cocu. The Dutch outfit, who finished second in the Eredivisie last term, beat Belgian side Zulte-Waregem in the previous round of qualifying, to set up a meeting with Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Cocu's side will go into the two-legged contest as underdogs, but the 42-year-old is relishing the opportunity to try and knock out one of Europe's biggest clubs.
"It will be a difficult task for sure, but also a nice challenge which will allow us to see how we measure up to them," he told reporters.

"They might be busy reducing the age of their squad, but it is still of a high level."
Elsewhere in Friday's draw, Olympique Lyonnais were paired with Real Sociedad with a spot in the group stage up for grabs and president Jean-Michel Aulas is wary of the Spanish side."It's a tough draw because we will face the team that finished fourth in La Liga and the second leg is away," he told reporters.

"You should not expect an easy draw considering the quality of the opposition, but it's possible for us to advance."Sociedad coach Jagoba Arrasate is expecting a tight encounter with les Gones, who beat Swiss side Grasshoppers 2-0 on aggregate in the previous round.

"This will be an attractive and even tie and one that will be decided by the smallest of details," he commented.Fenerbahce will host Arsenal in the first leg of their much anticipated tie on August 21, and captain Emre Belozoglu believes their rowdy home supporters could have a significant impact on the end result.

"If we can compete well, I believe we have a chance against them," Emre explained. "We want to gain an advantage by getting a good result in the first match with the support of our fans."

Guardiola: Victory will give Bayern confidence

    304117_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola is pleased with Bayern Munich's 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach and hopes it will inspire confidence in the new Bundesliga season.

The opening day win comes nearly two weeks after they suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup, despite enjoying a dominant pre-season in the rest of their matches.

The Spaniard believes they have some work to do before they can get back into their groove but predicted that improved performances will come with competitive game time.

"We knew it would be a tough match," he told reporters. "It’s always hard work against Monchengladbach.

"We had no control over the match in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

"We’re satisfied with this first victory, but we need a couple more wins to build up our confidence."

The Bavarians next face a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on August 17, looking to build on the opening day victory at the Allianz Arena.

    Hamsik extends Napoli deal

    280084_heroa.jpg

Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik has confirmed that he has extended his contract with the club until 2018.

The Slovakia international, who has been with the Naples club since 2007, has become one of the hottest properties in European football at the Stadio San Paolo.
The 26-year-old confirmed his renewal after the Partenopei's 2-1 friendly win over Benfica on Friday, revealed his hope that compatriot Martin Skrtel joins from Liverpool and predicted a top debut season from Gonzalo Higuain."I have just renewed my contract with Napoli until 2018 and I'm very happy," Hamsik told Mediaset Premium.

"I do not decide who we sign in the transfer market, but Skrtel's definitely a great player and would suit Napoli. Higuain? I think it will be a great year for him."
Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis also spoke out with delight about Hamsik's renewal and praised the player for ignoring the attention of other top teams to be a key figure for Rafael Benitez's men.

"It’s a perfect marriage with Hamsik," he wrote on Twitter. "He is a great man, a great professional and a great player who honours the Napoli jersey."It is a shirt he is happy and satisfied to honour. We have renewed his contract, extending it to 2018."

Higuain, who scored his first goal for the Naples-based club since his move from Real Madrid earlier this summer to secure the win over Benfica, revealed the home crowd had given him goosebumps following the triumph.

"I am very happy to have scored my first goal at the San Paolo," the Argentine said. "I really hoped to score tonight and to give my first goal to the fans. I managed it and I am really happy."Hearing the noise of the crowd at my goal and them chanting my name was an amazing experience, it gave me goosebumps. I thank the Neapolitans for this splendid evening and for all the warmth they are giving me."

Wenger intent on pursuing Suarez despite Liverpool's stance

    304074_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal will continue their "amicable" pursuit of Luis Suarez despite Liverpool's insistence that the striker will not be sold this summer.

Liverpool owner John W Henry claimed on Thursday that his side would not sanction the Uruguay international's move to the Emirates Stadium, regardless of the bid from the north London club.

Wenger, who said on Wednesday that a move for Suarez is on "standby", has reiterated that the club will be honourable in their bid for the 26-year-old but claims a change of heart from Liverpool could allow the deal to be completed.

"There is nothing to add to what I said already about the transfer of Suarez," Wenger told the club's official website. "If it will be done, it will be done in a respectful and amicable way with Liverpool.

"I didn't read [Liverpool owner John W Henry’s] statements but we'll be faithful to the way we want to behave.

"To make a transfer happen, you need the agreement of three parties - the buyer, the seller and the player.

"We know what we want to do. The player, if I look at the statements [does] as well. Liverpool at the moment do not agree. If they change their minds or not, I don't know. We'll respect that.

"We are looking at possibilities to strengthen our squad. Suarez is one of the targets. If he's not for sale, he's not for sale. We have to accept that.

"Every club has its own way of dealing with things, we have our way and we respect all the other clubs."

Rooney thanks Hodgson for 'showing faith' after England call-up

    253181_heroa.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has thanked Roy Hodgson for "showing his faith" after his inclusion in England's squad to face Scotland.

The 27-year-old has been ordered to train away from United's first team as he continues to force through a summer move to Chelsea.

Rooney, who was absent from Rio Ferdinand's testimonial on Friday, has not featured in a match since England's 2-2 with Brazil on June 2.

The striker is unlikely to take part in United's Community Shield fixture against Wigan Athletic at Wembley on Sunday due to a shoulder injury, but he is available for selection for the clash against Scotland three days later.

"Can't wait to join up with the England squad and hopefully play in a competitive match, they always are against Scotland," Rooney posted his Facebook page.

"Big thanks to Roy Hodgson for selecting me and showing his faith and support, appreciate it."

Blanc praises Cavani debut despite disappointing draw

    304102_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has praised Edinson Cavani's performance in his debut in the side's 1-1 draw with Montpellier to open the Ligue 1 season.

The Uruguayan came off the bench in Friday's clash - which saw Remy Cabella open the scoring for the hosts before PSG defender Maxwell equalised - but was unable to score the winner for the reigning French champions.

Despite this, Blanc was pleased with how his €63 million striking recruit played in his first game for PSG and hopes the game time following the summer break will help improve his fitness.

"He created depth," the Frenchman told reporters after the game. "He also had a great opportunity that was blocked by a defender. He will give us the depth we need.

"He is not 100 percent, far from it. But he is still an important player and, in particular, a goalscorer. This is a player who has had about 10 days of preparation. He needs to play.
"There will be no friendly matches for him to reach perfect condition so therefore it must be done in an official match."

He also added that the ex-Napoli forward needs time to adapt to playing alongside fellow former Serie A star Zlatan Ibrahimovic for les Parisiens. "We will have to work and especially focus on them working together," Blanc said. "It is one of the first times they [Cavani and Ibrahimovic] have played minutes together."A balance must be found to enable them to be effective."PSG failed to take advantage of a red card to Montpellier's Abdelhamid El Kaoutari with fewer than 20 minutes to go and Blanc admits that victory for his side would not have been deserved.

"We hoped for a better result. You have to be logical, but we provided too little in the first half to my liking," the 47-year-old added. "We made too many technical errors that allowed Montpellier to open the scoring. The first half was very bad for us.

"The second half was better, as we finally used the wings. Late in the game we could have won, even though I think a draw is a fair result.

"We could have lost that game, but we knew not to lose. We are not content. This was the minimum we could do this evening."

Bale trademarks 'Eleven of Hearts' goal celebration

    300627_heroa.jpg

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has seen plans to trademark his 'Eleven of Hearts' goal celebration approved by the Intellectual Property Office.

The Wales international, who is valued at €115 million by Spurs in the wake of Real Madrid's intense interest, is now able to use the celebration on "clothing, footwear and headgear" as well as precious metals and leather.

Bale regularly forms a heart shape with his hands after scoring a goal - something which he did 21 times in the Premier League last season - though he is not the first person to do the celebration.

Should Bale make the move to Spain, his global appeal would likely rocket, especially if a world-record fee, widely expected to be involved in the deal, is parted with for his services.

His recently trademarked celebration could be a big part of Bale's image rights and add to the wages that Madrid could offer him. No player at Madrid currently wears Bale's No.11 shirt.

Bale, 24, won both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year awards last season as Tottenham finished fifth.

Bayern Munich 3-1 Borussia Monchengladbach: Bavarians battle to victory in Bundesliga opener

    304071hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich kicked off their Bundesliga defence with a hugely entertaining 3-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday.

The Bavarians began in style and quickfire goals from Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic ensured Pep Guardiola's reign retained the element of domination that Jupp Heynckes had fashioned throughout last season's treble success.

A Dante own-goal just before half-time ensured that the Allianz Arena tie remained in the balance and Lucien Favre's men came out fighting after the break and threatened to equalise on a number of occasions.

However, Alvaro Dominguez conceded two penalties in the space of two minutes - both handballs - and, though Thomas Muller saw the first brilliantly saved by Marc Andre ter Stegen, David Alaba smoothly converted the second attempt in the 69th minute to put to bed any comeback from the visitors.

In Guardiola's first Bundesliga game, he was forced to leave out two of the club's close-season acquisitions with Mario Gotze still recovering from injury and Thiago Alcantara suffering from illness.

Recent signings Christoph Kramer, Raffael and Max Kruse started for the visitors, with Lucien Favre having led his side to a draw and victory in their previous two visits to the Allianz Arena.

Gladbach were put on the back foot immediately as Bayern swarmed forward in the early stages, and the hosts were rewarded for their pressure in the 12th minute.

Franck Ribery lofted a well-executed pass over the top of the visitors' defence, with Robben racing onto the ball and prodding the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal.

Bayern's dominance was reinforced just four minutes later as Mandzukic double his side's lead, pouncing on a rebound after Ter Stegen had kept Ribery out from Robben's free-kick from the right.

Favre's side still managed to force chances with Manuel Neuer forced into a smart reflexes stop by Raffael, but struggled to contain the constant wide threat of Ribery and Robben.

However, Gladbach were given a route back into the game, shortly before the break thanks to a Dante own-goal.

Juan Arango played the ball across the Bayern goal from the left flank with Dante poking past Neuer as the keeper came to claim the ball just behind him.

Ter Stegen was then forced into two wonderful saves to keep the score at 2-1, first tipping a Toni Kroos effort before denying Mandzukic's header from the resulting corner.

The second half began frantically, with Kruse having two good opportunities to equalise within 11 minutes.

Kroos then hit Ter Stegen's left-hand post from long range after 59 minutes before Bayern got the crucial breakthrough in a crazy three-minute period.

Alvaro Dominguez handled the ball in the box in the 66th minute but Muller saw his effort saved. However, bizarrely, Dominguez handled the ball again immediately after Ter Stegen's save and a second penalty was awarded.

Alaba took over duties and scored to restore Bayern's their two-goal lead, in the strangest of circumstances.

Despite the blow of conceding the third goal, Gladbach still threatened in the remainder of the game, the bright Kruse just being smothered by Dante as he raced towards goal.

However, they were unable to breach the hosts' defence and threaten a comeback, as Bayern took all three points against their opponents, just as they did in the final game of last season at Borussia Park.

Arsene Wenger respects Liverpool's Luis Suarez stance

    Arsene-Wenger_2982199.jpg

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will respect Liverpool's decision if they choose not to sell forward Luis Suarez.

The Gunners have placed a bid of £40m + £1 for the Uruguayan, which the player believes triggers a buy-out clause in his contract if it comes from a club who have qualified for the UEFA Champions League. However, Liverpool say that is not the case and owner John W Henry is adamant the player will not be sold to Arsenal for any price. And Wenger says that, if Liverpool are not willing to sell, then there is nothing more that Arsenal can do.

Speaking at a press conference in Helsinki, he said: "There is nothing to add to what I said already about the transfer of Suarez.

"If it will be done, it will be done in a respectful and amicable way with Liverpool.
"I didn't read (Henry's) statements but we'll be faithful to the way we want to behave."To make a transfer happen, you need the agreement of three parties - the buyer, the seller and the player.
