Chelsea 2-1 Roma: Lampard and Lukaku give Blues comeback win

    304411hp2.jpg

Two second half goals gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Roma in a friendly at RFK Stadium on Saturday night.

The Italians opened the scoring thanks to a Mark Schwarzer howler, but Chelsea struck back with second-half goals from Frank Lampard and a late winner from Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea got off to a flying start as Roma goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis had to be alert in the second minute to deny a Michael Essien volley off a great layoff from Fernando Torres.

There wasn't much action until 20 minutes later, when Chelsea goalkeeper Schwarzer gift-wrapped Roma the opener. The Australian misplayed a routine back pass, allowing the ball to bounce off his post and back to Eric Lamela, who slammed home from two yards away.

Schwarzer would partially make amends 10 minutes later, when he got down quickly to save a Pablo Osvaldo effort that was bound for the bottom corner.

The Italians would frustrate their opposition for the remainder of the half, save for one neat spell of combination play before the half between Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle. The German's shot flew just over the goal with De Sanctis at full stretch.

Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes at the half, and it appeared to turn the tide in Chelsea's favor, as the Blues pressured the Roma goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half, although the Italians' defense held firm.

It didn't take long for the pressure to pay off though. Demba Ba's neat layoff found Lampard, who was left with a wide open look from the top of the arc. The veteran midfielder made no mistake, cracking a low drive into the near corner for the equalizer.

Chelsea carried the balance of play for the next 15 minutes, but Roma had chances to take the lead as well, but the Giallorossi were let down by a lack of cutting edge around the goal.

With only minutes remaining, Chelsea found a winner. Eden Hazard made the play happen, snaking his way past the Roma defense on the end-line before pulling the ball back for Demba Ba. The striker found his forward partner Lukaku, whose deflected shot found its way into the back of the net from close range.

Real Madrid 3-0 Inter: Classy Casemiro sees los Blancos ease to victory

    304358hp2.jpg

Real Madrid coasted to victory as they turned on the style in a 3-0 victory over an unspiring Inter at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, America.

Carlo Ancelotti's men were rarely threatened as strikes from Kaka, Ronaldo and the outstanding Casemiro saw them post an easy victory against their Italian opponents, who look to be in for another tough season in Serie A under new boss Walter Mazzarri.

Inter started the brighter and Rodrigo Palacio was almost clean through on goal in only the second minute. Andrea Ranocchia's hopeful clearance ballooned beyond the Real backline and was read by the Argentine forward who was only denied the chance to open the scoring by his failure to control the high ball as it came over his shoulder - an alert Diego Lopez saving his defenders’ blushes as he raced out to collect the loose ball.

Real Madrid soon assumed control of the match and through Kaka and the impressive Casemiro, los Blancos began to create a number of opportunities.

Both Morata and Angel Di Maria had half chances inside the opening 10 minutes. The Spanish Under-21 striker was inches away from connecting with a Kaka cross from the right and the Argentine fluffed his lines when set up by the same player just 12-yards out.

Eventually the Brazilian Kaka took it upon himself to open the scoring, although he needed a slight reprieve himself to do so.

Chesting down a cross from fellow Brazilian Casemiro, the former AC Milan playmaker saw his first effort blocked by Samir Handanovic in the Inter goal. However the giant Slovenian could only watch as Kaka reacted quickest to the loose ball to send a diving header into the bottom corner and put Real Madrid in front.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men continued to press forward and Cristiano Ronaldo sent a couple of efforts wide of both posts as he attempted to outfox Handanovic from range.

It was from closer quarters though that Ronaldo did eventually double Madrid’s lead, latching onto Casemiro’s smart through-ball and smashing an effort across an outstretched Handanovic and into the far corner to strengthen Real’s grip on the match just before the break.

The signs were just as ominous for the Nerazzurri at the start of the second half as their opponents almost started the second half the way they had ended the first as Di Maria rattled the crossbar less than 60 seconds after the restart.

Chances began to try up for Ancelotti’s men and Inter almost found away back into the game as the unlikely partnership of Ranocchia and Palacio linked up once more. This time the Argentine striker was able to take down the defenders giant clearance, but his finishing let him down on this occasion, curling his effort wide of Lopez’s goal when he really should have hit the target.

Real Madrid did eventually make it three though as Casemiro claimed the final touch on Di Maria’s deep corner, although replays suggested the final touch may have come off of an Inter defender.

Arsenal ‘see off Chelsea to agree £14m deal for Bayern Munich star Luiz Gustavo’

    1000x66589.jpg

The Gunners have been tracking the midfielder all summer and are said to have beaten off competition from Chelsea and Bundesliga side Wolfsburg for Gustavo’s signature. If Arsenal can agree personal terms with the 26-year-old he will become Arsene Wenger’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of French youngster Yaya Sanogo.

Gustavo has become surplus to requirements in Pep Guardiola’s side, who beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 in last night’s opening league fixture, with the likes of Mario Gotze, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Toni Kroos and new signing Thiago Alcantara ally vying for a spot in the side.

The Brazilian international started just 16 Bundesliga games last term for the eventual champions and had to settle for an 89th-minute substitute appearance in the Champions League final, where Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
But Gustavo, a holding midfielder who can also be utilised across the back, is a player who would slot well into the Gunners’ side, with Arsene Wenger looking to strengthen his defensive options.

    :(Rooney 'confident of Chelsea move'

    Wayne-Rooney-Manchester-United-1024_2984297.jpg

Wayne Rooney has told his Manchester United team-mates he will be joining Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho has already had two bids for the England striker rejected, but a source close to United told ESPN that Rooney is convinced he will be headed to Stamford Bridge and has said as much to his colleagues at Old Trafford.Several of the United squad are reportedly unhappy with Rooney, who has ignored their appeals to extend his nine-year stay with the Premier League champions, and their relationship has not improved with the attacker increasingly confident he will go.

United have insisted the 27-year-old is not for sale, but Chelsea haven't abandoned their pursuit of the former Everton player.

Sir Alex Ferguson said that Rooney asked to leave United before the end of last season and that although David Moyes has said he is keen to keep the forward, he remains unsettled.Rooney has not appeared for United in their pre-season programme -- apart from a behind-closed-doors friendly against Real Betis -- because of hamstring and shoulder injuries.

He missed Rio Ferdinand's testimonial, the 3-1 defeat to Sevilla, but trained with the reserves Thursday and Friday.Rooney could be fit enough to face Wigan in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley, but it remains to be seen whether Moyes will pick him.He has been included in Roy Hodgson's England squad for Wednesday's friendly against Scotland.

    Diego would 'love' Atletico return

    226903_heroa.jpg

Wolfsburg playmaker Diego has confessed that he would love to return to Atletico Madrid before the close of the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old Brazilian has been repeatedly linked with a return to the Vicente Calderon, having enjoyed a season-long loan in the Spanish capital two years ago.

The Rojiblancos have yet to make a move for their former attacker but Diego admits he would relish the opportunity to team up with coach Diego Simeone once more.

The former Juventus man told COPE: "Everybody knows that Simeone and I have a special relationship. He is one of the best coaches in the world and it was a true pleasure working with him.

"Everybody knows the love I have for Atletico. I have a valuation and if they are not willing to pay that I must accept it.

"But at the moment I am only thinking about Wolfsburg and doing well for them."

Diego, whose current deal expires next summer, netted three times in 30 appearances throughout his year-long stay with the capital club.

The door remains open for Kiessling return, claims Bierhoff

    254544_heroa.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen forward Stefan Kiessling must not give up hope of making Germany's World Cup squad next summer, according to general-manager Oliver Bierhoff.

The 29-year-old has been absent from the national team since 2010, with coach Joachim Low prolonging the three-year absence by opting against naming him in the squad to face Paraguay on Wednesday.

However, Bierhoff says the door remains open for Kiessling, who picked up the golden boot in the Bundesliga last season with 25 goals.

"It always hurts to see players making a name for themselves, but not really making the step into the national team," he told Sky television.

"During my time, that was Martin Max. Joachim Low has said that all of the doors are open and it's up to the player to force his way in."

Kiessling, who is yet to score an international goal for his country, has earned six caps for Die Mannschaaft.

Remy ruled out of Manchester City clash

    303539_heroa.jpg

Newcastle striker Loic Remy will miss his new club's first game of the Premier League season, against Manchester City.

Magbpies boss Alan Pardew confirmed on Sunday that the 26-year-old, who has arrived on loan from QPR, had picked up a strain that will keep him out of the trip to the Etihad on August 19.

"We look like we need a bit of improvement at the top of the pitch," Pardew told The Chronicle. "We have Remy in and unfortunately he's injured, so that's still an area we need to improve on.

"It's just a strain but it's an area that is stopping him from running at the moment. We need to get some work into him.

"There is no chance of him making Man City. Whether there is a chance of him playing against West Ham in the next game is something we will have to suck and see as we go along."

The France international was in good form for QPR last season, despite their relegation, as he netted six goals in 14 appearances after joining from Marseille in January.

Milan will be ready for PSV, says Boateng

    301276_heroa.jpg

AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng insists the club will be ready for their vital Champions League play-off against PSV.

The Rossoneri were last week paired with the Dutch outfit in final qualifying stage before the group stages of Europe's elite competition and the Ghana international has moved to allay fears the Italians' pre-season form - which included a 5-3 defeat to Manchester City - could spill over into their competitive clashes.

“There are still almost two weeks before we have to take it seriously, so we are perfectly within the planned schedule," Boateng told Topmercato.com

"Our results in pre-season weren't exceptional, but I think the side did pretty well. We only had problems with Manchester City when we conceded five goals in the opening half-hour.

"But I can assure you we will be ready for the Champions League play-off."

The 26-year-old went on to highlight the talents of team-mates Mario Balotelli, Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo, and believes the trio will aid the club's push for another top-three finish this season.

"Milan will fight for the top spots this term. Our team is solid and I am convinced we’ll at least finish on the podium," he stated.

"Many people think we are not as competitive as in the past, but they are wrong.

"There are fewer marquee names, but still players of great talent like Stephan El Shaarawy, Mario Balotelli and Riccardo Montolivo, for example.

"You can be sure, Milan will be up there."

The Rossoneri travel to Netherlands on August 20 for the first leg, before welcoming their Dutch counterparts to San Siro eight days later.

'Cavani & Ibra could be too selfish to play together' - Ginola

    304100_heroa.jpg

Former Paris Saint-Germain winger David Ginola suspects Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic could both prove too "selfish" to forge an effective strike partnership this season.

Much has been made over how the arrival of the Uruguay international will impact on the former AC Milan star, who netted 30 times for les Parisiens en route to lifting the Ligue 1 title last season.

The enigmatic Swede has reportedly been put out by the prospect of having to share the spotlight with the €64 million man this term, and Ginola foresees trouble ahead.

"The main questions about PSG this season are: Will Cavani and Ibra get along? And 'Will [Javier] Pastore play?," the former France international told L'Equipe.

"It is important for Cavani to score goals. This is what he will judged on, and the same for Ibra.

"They're both strikers and have to be selfish, so I am waiting to see how they will get along.

"It will be complicated for Pastore, too. He did not have a great season last year, and there is more competition now. There are almost too many good players in attack for PSG."

Meanwhile, Tottenham legend Ginola went on to outline his desire to return to the Premier League in a coaching capacity.

"I will soon get my Uefa A license, which will allow me to coach in the Championship and I hope to get my Pro License by 2014 in order to coach in the Premier League," he said.

"I'm ready for it. I miss the smell of the grass and I miss the players. This is closer to home for me and I could not see myself returning to Clairefontaine."

The 46-year-old, who enjoyed a three-year stint with Spurs until 2000, also revealed how he attempted to persuade chairman Daniel Levy to move for Dimitri Payet, arguing that the Olympique de Marseille signing would have formed a formidable frontline alongside Gareth Bale and Roberto Soldado.

"I have seen Dimitri Payet play, he was excellent last year and is a great recruit for Marseille," he enthused.

"He has everything you need to be an excellent player and can make the difference at any time, a little bit like Eden Hazard.

"I recently mentioned him to Daniel Levy. I said he would have a dream attack if he plays with Defoe, Soldado or Bale - but Marseille had already bought him at the time."

    Martinez open to Porto exit

    300716_heroa.jpg

Jackson Martinez has issued a 'come and get me' plea to his admirers by revealing he would be prepared to quit Porto this summer.

The Colombia international, 26, has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Portuguese champions throughout the off-season, with Napoli among those said to be keen on the striker.

Portistas boss Paulo Fonseca recently poured cold water on the speculation linking Martinez with a move away from Estadio Dragao, but the player himself - who has a €40 million release clause - hinted that a transfer remains a distinct possibility.

"I'm very calm about my situation here and I will continue to do my job and respect my contract with Porto," he told reporters.

"I prefer not to think about the speculation. I'm fine at Porto, but I cannot rule out the possibility of leaving."

The former Chiapas forward, whose contract expires in 2016, joined the Portuguese giants last summer and netted 29 times in 38 appearances in his debut season.
