Ferdinand: England need a 10-year plan

    295684_heroa.jpg

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand would sacrifice England's qualification for the 2014 World Cup for long-term development.

The former Three Lions international fears for the future of the national side at every level and even believes that manager Roy Hodgson may not guide the senior team to Brazil next summer.

The 34-year-old Red Devil insists a long-term plan must be implented to give the team an identity.

"It’s going to take someone with big balls to come and grab England by the scruff of the neck and say, 'this is what we are going to do and it might take 10 years to do it'," he told the Daily Mail.

"We might not qualify for the World Cup or European Championship, but I would rather not qualify for one or two tournaments knowing, in 10 years’ time, we will have an identity we can be proud of.

"I don’t see the connection between the senior team and the Under-21s, or the Under-17s, or the Under-20s, and that doesn’t bode well for the England team."

The former Leeds and West Ham defender sees the introduction of St. George's Park as a step in the right direction towards the likes of Spain, Germany and Holland.

"There is a new system being put in place and St. George’s Park is part of that. We started to see something when Glenn Hoddle was in charge, a bit of an identity with free-flowing football," he continued.

"Since then I don’t think we have had a real identity. If all the names were taken off the back of the shirts and the colours were changed, you couldn’t tell an England team.

"You look at an Italian team, a Dutch team, a Spanish team, a German team or a Brazilian team, without seeing the names on the shirts you would identify them because they’re working from a script.

"You could put an Under-16 lad into the senior Spanish team or Italian team, he might not have the attributes in terms of physique and speed to be able to deal with it, but positionally I’m sure he’d know what to do because they’re taught that, day-in, day-out."

Agger will not chase Liverpool exit like Suarez, says Rodgers

    275656_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident Daniel Agger will not target an Anfield exit following Barcelona's rejected bid for the defender.

The Dane's agent revealed on Wednesday the Catalan giants failed with a recent offer after submitting a £25 million bid for Chelsea centre-back David Luiz.

And with Luis Suarez making no secret of his desire to leave Liverpool, Rodgers does not expect similar behaviour from vice-captain Agger.

"Daniel has given me his word that he loves Liverpool and I will expect him to be here," Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

"He had chances to leave, but told me as long as we wanted him here, then he wanted to stay.

"He's been brilliant, that is why we have given him the vice-captaincy. The one thing I got from him from the very first conversation is loyalty.

"That is why he signed a new contract and committed himself to the club, and why we gave him a new contract - because we want him to be part of our future.

"He is important to the way we play, and he has been central to the way we work since I came here, and he knows that. There have been a couple of inquiries, but we have made our position clear."

Nasri: I did not kill anyone

    305177_heroa.jpg

Samir Nasri has apologised for his previous misdemeanours with France but says "he didn't kill anyone" and should be given an opportunity to redeem his actions.

The Manchester City midfielder was handed a three-game ban by the French football federation following his outburst toward a journalist at Euro 2012 and had not been called up by Didier Deschamps ever since.

However, Nasri is now ready to make his comeback in the friendly against Belgium and he is keen to prove that he has matured.

"I want to start by apologising again. I did not show a professional attitude at Euro 2012," the 26-year-old said at a press conference.

"I should have dealt with the situation differently. It's up to me to make sure that this does not happen again.

"I am focused on the present and the future now. I did not kill anyone. Worse things happened in 2010. I have been given a second chance.

"I had not been called up for a year and feared I might not get a second chance. You do not always realise that it is a big occasion when you get called up for the national team. I watched all of France's games and it hurt that I wasn't there."

Wednesday's game against Belgium is scheduled to kick off at 21:00CET.

Messi has two years left, says Scolari

    269600_heroa.jpg

Brazil coach Felipe Scolari has predicted that Barcelona star Lionel Messi will be the best player in the world for the next two years.

The Argentine attacker has won four consecutive Ballons d'Or and Scolari believes there is still much more to come from the 26-year-old before the hands of time begin to take their toll on his performances.

"I think that Lionel Messi will continue to be the best player in the world for the next two years or so," Scolari was quoted as saying on the official website of the German football association.

"Messi not only plays for the team, but he also has amazing individual skills. He can decide a match all by himself with his ability."

The Brazil coach then went on to say that Neymar, 21, will need time to adapt to European football, but is confident that he will succeed at Barca.

"Now that he's at Barcelona, Neymar can show his technical abilities and make the same individual actions as Messi.

"His first year in Spain will mainly be about learning things and adapting to a new tactical formation. In Brazil we don't think as much about tactics as in Europe and Neymar will have to adapt.

"He is eager to learn, though, and will play at a higher level than in Brazil in the Spanish Liga and the Champions League."

Neymar could make his official Barcelona debut in their Liga opener against Levante on August 18.

Giggs: Manchester United unfazed by City & Chelsea spending

    295963_heroa.jpg

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs has insisted his side are not fazed by title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea strengthening in the transfer window this summer.

Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge for a second spell in June, and quickly spent big on Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel, while Manuel Pellegrini announced his arrival with the signatures of Alvaro Negredo, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Stevan Jovetic.

Meanwhile, United boss David Moyes has failed with bids for Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas as he continues to try to bolster his central midfield, but Giggs is confident the current crop are talented enough to retain their Premier League crown.

"Obviously, Mourinho has come in to Chelsea, and City are spending quite a bit of money, but it is not something we are worried about," Giggs is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

"The quality is in the squad. We showed that last year. Now we have to show it again. We won the league with those players so we are looking forward to the start of the season.

"If we sign someone - great. If not, we will just get on with it."

Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic has dismissed suggestions that Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement has weakened the English champions, insisting United's winning mentality has not waned following Moyes' appointment.

"We respect everyone's opinion, but we know the players we have here," Vidic added. "We know what the expectations are. We are just focused on winning the title and we are not very bothered about what people say.

"We will show we can compete for the big trophies again, Champions League and Premier League. We don't have a problem with that.

"We never fight for our place in the media, we like to fight on the pitch and we'll do that again. Every season you have to prove you are good enough to play for this club.

"It's no different now. This club will always have big expectations, it doesn't matter who is the manager, who are the players, who is the chairman. It's always the same.

"Sir Alex was the biggest manager in football history, but this will continue to be a big club whoever the chairman or manager is."

Real Madrid do not need Bale, says Sanchis

    300627_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid legend Manolo Sanchis says the club do not need Gareth Bale but believes the Tottenham star would be a good addition if he were to make the move to the Spanish capital.

The Liga giants are keen to lure the Welshman away from his current club, but have so far been reluctant to meet Spurs' €115 million valuation of the 24-year-old and Sanchis feels Bale's price tag could prove to be too much of an obstacle.

"Is Bale absolutely necessary? I don't think so," Sanchis was quoted as saying by Marca.

"But if he comes, he will be a good option, a very good one. The problem is the price..."

Sanchis then went on to stress that the potential arrival of Bale would not affect the development of the club's own youth players.

"I would not link the progress of the youth team players to the signing of Bale.

"At Madrid, both types of player have always had to learn to live together and the results have been good. There are also cases of big signings at the club being shown up by youngsters with less experience."

The 48-year-old Sanchis made over 500 league appearances for Madrid between 1983 and 2001.

West Ham complete signing of Stewart Downing from Liverpool

    article-2391178-1B462AA8000005DC-485_634x428.jpg

West Ham have completed the signing of winger Stewart Downing from Liverpool.
The 29-year-old has joined Sam Allardyce's side on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £5m.

Downing, who has won 34 caps for England, follows striker Andy Carroll in making the summer switch from Anfield to Upton Park and is looking forward a new chapter in his career."I'm very excited. It's a great opportunity for me being here, it's a great club and I'm really excited to get going," Downing told the club's website.

"I'm ready and I'm fit for the first game against Cardiff City. I've played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front.
"It's all happened quickly, but I'm really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday."Downing began his career with Middlesbrough, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2002.He joined Aston Villa following Boro's relegation from the Premier League in 2009 and was voted their Player of the Season for 2010-2011.

A £20m move to Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool followed in July 2011 with Downing picking up a Carling Cup winners' medal before falling out of favour under current Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.Downing fought his way back into first-team contention in the second half of last season but has now opted to take up a fresh challenge with West Ham.

Dani Alves defends Neymar for shunning media

    305013_heroa.jpg

Dani Alves has leapt to the defence of club and international team-mate Neymar for deciding against facing the media on the eve of Brazil's friendly against Switzerland.

The forward had been scheduled to appear at the press conference in Basel but he withdrew late in the day, much to the frustration of the many journalists in attendance.

Dani Alves did attend, though, and he asked the media to show a little understanding, given Neymar's physical condition has been the subject of much debate ever since Barcelona announced earlier this month that the forward has anaemia.

"Everyone's talking a lot about these little problems that he is having," the Blaugrana right-back mused.

"So, it's important for him to not get distracted by all these problems being discussed at the moment and not let them interfere with his development.

"You have to forgive the boy. He's focused on what he wants and he is so important for us.

"And it's always been better to work hard and speak little."

Neymar, who inspired Brazil to victory in this summer's Confederations Cup, joined Barcelona from boyhood club Santos for a fee of €57 million.

Marcelo ready for step up in class with Hannover

New Hannover signing Marcelo says that he will relish what he feels is a clear step up in class after leaving the Eredivisie for the Bundesliga.

The Brazilian has just arrived at the AWD-Arena from PSV, having signed a four-year deal with Mirko Slomka's side on Saturday. However, Marcelo claims to have already noticed a difference in quality - after just one training session with his new team-mates."Well my first impression here was really really good," the defender explained. "The players gave me a great welcome, and in the training I can see that the players have a lot of quality and I think it was a great [session].

"This is the Bundesliga here, so you know the level is much higher. But I was thankful for a new challenge in my life; that's why I chose to move away now.

"I had a great time in PSV so it was really the time to make a new start in my life."

Marcelo, who is a Santos youth academy product, first came to Europe in 2008, spending two years with Wisla Krakow before joining PSV.

Dempsey shocked by speed of Tottenham exit

    304416_heroa.jpg

Clint Dempsey has revealed his shock at the speed of his departure from Tottenham to join Seattle Sounders.

The attacking midfielder only moved to Spurs last summer from Fulham and says he was preparing himself for another season under Andre Villas-Boas after notching 12 goals during 2012-13.

However, Dempsey stated Seattle Sounders "moved mountains" to get him to complete a £6 million move to the MLS and is excited to return to his native country.

"I had two years left on my contract at Tottenham,” Dempsey told the Evening Standard. "To be honest with you, going back to pre-season, I thought I would be there [this season] but I guess it was just timing.

"The right situation came along. The MLS and the Seattle Sounders moved mountains to get me back and I wanted to come back when I could still do it. I didn’t want to come back when I was past it because I wanted to make an impact.

"I don’t know what my effect will be so we will just have to wait and see. I am looking forward to getting back and playing more of the style of football I fell in love with - the South American style, being more creative on the ball and having that little bit more freedom to try things."

    Gerrard reveals Rooney talks

England captain Steven Gerrard has revealed he has had a conversation with Wayne Rooney over the striker's future at Manchester United.

The 27-year-old is considering handing in a formal transfer request in order to push through a move to Chelsea this summer having grown disillusioned with life at Old Trafford.

Despite being ruled out of United's Community Shield win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday with a shoulder injury, Rooney has been participating in training with Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Scotland at Wembley.

"It wouldn't be fair on Wayne for me to talk about that conversation but of course I am close to him," Gerrard said.

"But for me it is all about how Wayne Rooney is feeling for tomorrow's game and I am sure he will sort the other stuff out."

Other than participating in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Real Betis on August 3, Rooney has not played in a match since England's 2-2 draw with Brazil on June 2.

Gerrard concedes Rooney is lacking in fitness but feels the forward is prepared to start in Wednesday's fixture.

"He is certainly not match fit," Gerrard continued.

"But it is the same old Wayne Rooney in training, he looks good, he is scoring goals. He is certainly ready to play, he needs these minutes for his confidence and I am sure he will be itching to start."

    Uefa warns clubs over FFP

    282652_heroa.jpg

Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino has warned clubs that they must adapt to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules or face sanctions.European football's governing body intend to implement new laws in 2018 that will see clubs required to bring their annual losses below €10 million.

The massive outlay of clubs like Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City this summer have prompted many to ask if the rules will actually be enforced, but Infantino insists that there will be no leniency shown towards any side whose books are not in order."Big clubs as well as small clubs, the rules are there," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "A year ago, we warned that this is the last wake-up call for the clubs and that the rules have teeth.

"The break-even rule will enter into force next season, taking into account the figures of this season and last season."The clubs know the rules. If they haven't generated enough revenue to perform these transfers, then there will be sanctions - sanctions which could be a warning or a fine or a restriction on registering new players or, finally, an exclusion."The Financial Fair Play rules have been introduced and implemented not to punish clubs but to help the clubs."

Meanwhile, Infantino admitted that he hopes that the new regulations might pave the way for supporters having a greater say in how their clubs are run."It's important to keep the fans on board," he reasoned. "Fans are the only ones who remain loyal throughout their life to the club."Everybody else sooner or later changes - players, managers, even owners - so a dialogue with fans to find the right balance is a good thing."

De Rossi to make final statement this week on Roma future

    283502_heroa.jpg

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has revealed that he will make a definitive statement on his future later this week.

The 30-year-old, who is currently on international duty with Italy, has admitted that he is tired of the constant speculation linking him with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico and has vowed to set the record straight.

"Right now, I will have two more days with the Azzurri," De Rossi told reporters on the eve of his country's friendly against Argentina.

"But then, I will speak on the topic once and for all. People can accuse me of anything they want, but not that I have not been clear."

De Rossi was then quizzed on his international and club colleague Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, who is said be keen on a move to Inter, having fallen out with the Giallorossi's supporters last season.

"I do not know what he wants to do," the Rome native insisted. "I've seen clear movement on his part and the club's.

"If he left, we would lose a great player, as well as a friend. But I don't want to speak about my own future, so I don't want to speak about others' either.

"I'm a friend of Daniel's and so I'm happy when he's happy. If he stays at Roma, I'll be happy for him. If he goes elsewhere, I'll be the same."

De Rossi was speaking not long after the Azzurri were granted an audience with the Pope on Tuesday.

    Inter sign Wallace from Chelsea

    300933_heroa.jpg

Inter have confirmed the signing of Chelsea defender Wallace on loan for the 2013-14 season.

The Brazilian, who joined the Blues from Fluminense in January, underwent a medical at San Siro earlier on Tuesday as he looked to secure first-team football away from Stamford Bridge, after Jose Mourinho noted in July that a lack of work permit this season would necessitate a temporary spell elsewhere.

The Nerazzurri confirmed the signing via their official website on Tuesday, and Wallace is now relishing the prospect of donning the famous shirt under Walter Mazzarri.

"Wallace is truly very happy that things all went for the best and now he just wants to wear the Inter jersey as soon as possible," agent Frederico Moraes earlier told Tuttomercatoweb.com.

The 19-year-old right-back is poised to become Mazzarri's 12th recruit of the transfer window since leaving Napoli in May to take over from Andrea Stramaccioni.

The Nerazzurri coach has brought in centre-backs Rolando and Matias Silvestre, while Diego Laxalt, Mauro Icardi and Ishak Belfodil have been added to the forward line.

Inter start their Serie A campaign with a home game against Genoa on August 25.

Ibrahimovic: I'll see out PSG contract

    303590_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has vowed to see out his contract with Paris Saint-Germain amidst reports that he could move elsewhere or even opt to hang up his boots.

The Sweden international fired the club to the Ligue 1 title last season but there has been speculation that he might leave the Parc des Princes, following the arrival of Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani from Napoli.

However, Ibrahimovic says that he is staying put, revealing that he remains as committed as ever to both PSG and the game itself.

"I will play for as long as possible," the 31-year-old forward told reporters on the eve of his nation's friendly against Norway.

"As long as I'm well, physically and mentally, I will continue. I have a contract with PSG for two more seasons and I will definitely respect that. Then, we'll see."

Ibrahimovic joined PSG from AC Milan last summer for a reported fee of €20 million.

    Atletico Madrid seal Aranzubia signing

    126866_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Dani Aranzubia on a free transfer from Segunda Division outfit Deportivo.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper completed a medical in the Spanish capital on Tuesday morning before signing a 12-month contract with the Rojiblancos.

Aranzubia freely admitted that he knows he faces a difficult task in trying to usurp Thibaut Courtois as Atletico's first-choice, but insisted that he was looking forward to the challenge.

“I am delighted to be joining such a massive club,” he told reporters. “I’m really happy and cannot wait to start work.

"I know that Atletico already have a great goalkeeper but I have come here to focus on what I need to do.

"I have to compete for a place and help the team to do well."

Aranzubia, who has one Spain cap to his name, had spent five seasons at the Riazor after joining from Athletic Bilbao in 2008.

He grabbed the headlines in February 2011 when he became the first goalkeeper in La Liga history to score from open play, heading home a 95th-minute equaliser against Almeria.

Gerrard 'really confident' Liverpool will not sell Suarez to Arsenal

    303237_heroa.jpg

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he is confident Luis Suarez will not be sold to a Premier League rival, with Arsenal keen on the striker.

The Gunners are believed to have bid £42 million for the Uruguay international although the Reds are adamant he will not be sold.

The striker is now training alone after pushing for a move away from Anfield, with manager Brendan Rodgers wanting an apology before he is allowed to return to first-team duties.

"If I can use my influence to try to make him stay I will try to do that, for Liverpool to move forward it's important we keep our best players," he told reporters.

"I'm really confident he won't be going to any one else in England."

The Liverpool skipper was speaking at a press conference ahead of England's friendly against Scotland, and he described the Wednesday's Wembley clash as an important part of their preparation for World Cup qualification.

"This game is important to our fans and will be like a derby match. We're looking forward to it," he added.

"It's important we keep everyone fit and the squad as strong as possible, but we are confident we can get to Brazil."

Samuel Eto'o will not leave Anzhi Makhachkala before the close of the summer transfer window, according to Fifa agent Peppino Tirri.

With the Russian club having recently announced plans to drastically reduce their expenditure, it has been speculated that the game's highest-paid player might be sold to the highest bidder in an effort to offset funds.

That has led to links with both Chelsea and Napoli, but Tirri, who was involved in the deal that saw Eto'o move from Inter to Anzhi, insists that the striker is staying put.

"Absolutely, yes," he told Tuttomercato. "Eto'o is an Anzhi player and the club have provided him with every guarantee in relation to his wage level, which would make it difficult to leave [for elsewhere]."

Indeed, Tirri unequivocally dismissed the possibility of Napoli being in a position to sign Eto'o, while at the same time saying he knew nothing of Jose Mourinho's reported interested in being reunited with his former Inter charge at Stamford Bridge.

"Napoli, it makes absolutely no sense," he declared. "The player has too high a wage. Would a deal be possible with a wage cut? I can guarantee that the player would not reduce [his salary].

"And I know nothing of Chelsea. Nobody has contacted me."

Eto'o was one of the key players in Inter's treble success of 201o, in Mourinho's final year at the Italian club.
