Bale would succeed at Real Madrid - Coleman

    300627_heroa.jpg

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has the right mentality to handle the pressure of joining Real Madrid for a world-record transfer fee, according to Wales boss Chris Coleman.

Negotiations have begun between the two clubs over a potential deal, though nothing has yet been agreed, but the international manager is confident that the Spurs star would not be overawed by a switch to the Spanish spotlight.

"He can stop and think 'wow, look at the situation I'm in' but he's not the type of lad to do that," Coleman told Sky Sports News.

"He's unassuming, he's quiet and you don't get to the level he's got to by having the mentality that you can just rest on what you've achieved already.

"The best players, the reason they're as good as they are, it's not just because of their talent - it's because of their mentality. They can handle pressure-cooker situations and they just take it in their stride. Gareth's got that mentality where he doesn't get carried away.

"Time and time again he scores a goal and you think 'how can he top that?' And he does with something else. He can take your breath away. He does that consistently."

Coleman previously coached La Liga outfit Real Sociedad and he is aware of the importance of Bale adapting to life in Spain if he joins Carlo Ancelotti's side.

"If there is a big transfer, he's not the type of player to get carried away with it," the Wales boss added. "If it does happen - I'm not saying it will, but if it does - he'll have to learn the culture quickly. That's what I found out when I was in Spain.

"Not everybody changes for you because you're from a different place. You've got to get in the middle of it. Learn the language, learn the culture and embrace it, I'm sure he'll do that."

Gomez: I lost interest in titles at Bayern

    299332_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez has revealed that he lost interest in winning titles with Bayern Munich and wanted to test himself in a new country.

The Germany international, 28, joined the Viola for an estimated €16 million this summer following a year plagued by an injury then being mostly benched as Bavarians romped to treble success under Jupp Heynckes.

Pep Guardiola's arrival did not change his situation and the forward has said that his departure from the Allianz Arena was down to a desire to learn a new language in Italy and try out football in Serie A.

"I hope everything goes well [at Fiorentina]," he told SID. "Maybe one year from now, we'll sit here and realise it was a bad decision. But I expect it to work out.

"[Fiorentina] is exactly the kind of challenge that I've been looking for.

"I thought to myself: 'I can stick with Bayern, maybe sit on the bench for three years and win three more titles, or I can develop as a person and a player.'

"Of course it was tough to leave Bayern. But I envisioned playing in Italy since I was a child.

"Some people might not understand this, because they define themselves with winning titles. But maybe, towards the end of a career, it's nice to master a new language instead of winning more titles."

Gomez could get his first taste of competitive football with Fiorentina on August 22 - the first leg of the Europa League play-off round before the group stages of the competition - before his new side's Serie A campaign kicks off on August 25 at home to Catania.

Eriksen open to possibility of joining Tottenham

    286315_heroa.jpg

Ajax attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen has revealed that he is open to the possibility of joining Tottenham and believes they are a "great club".

The Denmark international had been linked with a move to Liverpool and AC Milan earlier in the summer but Spurs made an enquiry for his services in December and have maintained their interest.

And, with less than a year left on his existing contract, the 21-year-old is willing to consider linking up with his ex-Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen in north London, although talks have yet to take place.

"Tottenham are a great club," Eriksen told Danish newspaper BT. "I know from Vertonghen that it is a good club, which is interesting, but there has not been any contact.

"I do not know if I am going to leave Ajax. We'll find out in two weeks. There are to my knowledge no negotiations right now either with a new club or Ajax.

"If there is a good approach [from another club], I see as an opportunity to try something new but, if nothing comes, I do not mind staying."

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has been busy reshaping his squad so far this summer - with the likes of Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Roberto Soldado all joining the club - though the future of star man Gareth Bale is still unclear.

Tottenham move for Barcelona defender Bartra

    276603_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have made an approach for Barcelona centre-back Marc Bartra of as the Premier League club look to reinforce their squad with a young central defender.

The Spain Under-21 star, who has loan offers to remain in La Liga from Valencia and Villarreal, is aware of Spurs' interest and open to a move to English football.

Any deal for the 22-year-old is also complicated by Barcelona's ongoing pursuit of a starting centre back, however.

The Spanish champions have seen cash offers for David Luiz and Daniel Agger rejected by Chelsea and Liverpool - with the Blues demanding €50 million for the Brazilian - but, should they be successful in brokering a deal for either, the Catalan giants would still prefer to loan Bartra out and assess his development over the course of the coming season rather than sell now.

They have also enquired over the availability of Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen, only to be told that the versatile Belgian is not for sale.

Barta, meanwhile, made 16 appearances for Barcelona last season and is needed there at least until their own new signing is made.

The sale of England international Steven Caulker to Cardiff City coupled with William Gallas's exit under freedom of contract has left Tottenham short of personnel in central defence.

Though Andre Villas-Boas and Franco Baldini, their recently appointed director of football, had negotiated a deal with Steaua Bucharest for Vlad Chiriches, the Romanian club's owner blocked the sale.

The pair also explored the possibility of signing Rolando from Porto, before pulling out of the move amidst concerns over the Portugal international's fitness and the €6m asking price. Villas-Boas's current strategy is to bring in a younger central defender with the potential to develop into a first choice.

Messi to miss Italy-Argentina through injury

    304658_heroa.jpg

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will miss Argentina's friendly with Italy on Wednesday due to injury.

Hot on the heels of Mario Balotelli's withdrawal from the Azzurri squad, the Ballon d'Or winner has left Rome following the two teams having met with Pope Francis in Vatican City.

The Albiceleste captain had struggled with a muscular problem while with the Blaugrana during their tour of Asia in pre-season and was unable to shake it off before the Stadio Olimpico friendly.

With La Liga's new season looming - Barca face Levante on Sunday - the 26-year-old will be keen to return to full fitness and has returned to Camp Nou to rest and recuperate instead of feature against Italy.

Luis Suarez hints he may stay at Liverpool because of fans

    luis-suarez-premier-liverpool-gerrard-testimonial_2984795.jpg

Luis Suarez has suggested he may be willing to stay at Liverpool and end his dispute with the club.Suarez had claimed that he had an agreement that he would be allowed to leave Liverpool if they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal have made two bids for the striker, and in the meantime Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has ordered Suarez to train alone and only return after he has apologised to his team-mates.But his desire to leave now appears to have changed.Suarez is currently away with Uruguay for their friendly in Japan and he was quoted in Uruguayan newspaper El Observador as saying he is willing to remain at Anfield because of the supporters.

"For now, owing to all the affection of the people, I would be staying," he said.
The newspaper goes on to suggest he may even extend his contract with the club. That would represent a remarkable u-turn from Suarez. In interviews with the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, Suarez said: "Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I'd be allowed to go."I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish - now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement.

"I don't feel betrayed (by Liverpool) but the club promised me something a year ago just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League."They gave me their word a year ago and now I want them to honour that. And it is not just something verbal with the coach but something that is written in the contract. I'm not going to another club to hurt Liverpool."

He even threatened to take Liverpool to Premier League arbitration to secure his release.Suarez said last week: "I have the club's word and we have the written contract and we are happy to take this to the Premier League for them to decide the case but I do not want it to come to that. We have the backing of the PFA."

But his latest comments suggest that the striker could well be staying which would be a huge boost for the club ahead of the new season.Speaking on Tuesday, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits he is desperate for his Anfield team-mate to stay on Merseyside.

"If I can use my influence to try to make him stay, I will try to do that," he told a press conference ahead of England's friendly against Scotland. "For Liverpool to move forward, it's important we keep our best players."I really don't know what is going to happen with him but I'm really confident he won't be going to anyone else in England."

Earlier in the week, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers stated there can be "no solution" to the stand-off with Suarez as long as the striker refuses to apologise. He told the club website: "It is something that we have to do everything we can to fix."There has been a lot said and a lot reported, and we have made a stance, as a club and as a manager, of the commitment and the standards required.

"If you don't have that commitment, and those standards, then you won't play. It's as simple as that."If we have got to sit and wait, then so be it. But this is a club that has got great values, and we hope that the situation can be resolved amicably, and I am sure it will be.

"There's no problem between me and him, it is quite calm. But obviously I have got to respect the club and the team."It doesn't matter who you are, if they're not pulling their weight then they are letting down the club, the city and everyone who has stood by them."So until I get that assurance that we are going to get nothing but 100% commitment, then there will be no solution."

First Thiago, then Cesc Fabregas, now... Mesut Ozil?

Manchester United fans may wish to remain sceptical on this one... but here we go...

Spanish radio station Punto Pelota - who forecast Jose Mourinho's return to Chelsea well in advance - claim that United want to sign the German playmaker.

THIS WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN IN THIS TRANSFER MARKET...

A report on their website states:

"The team that wants to sign is Manchester United and the player who wants to strengthen it is Mesut Özil".

"The offer could be 40 million pounds (46.5 million euros) and the player is aware that with the arrival of Bale will be more overbooking and is clearly going to ask the Real Madrid to accept the offer of the United.

"The economic benefit is impressive given what it cost at the time and in that space is spare.player may consider the option and the agent is moving as it is World Cup year. The team is Manchester United and the new coach wants or yes."

Ozil was strongly linked with Manchester United in the summer of 2010 after a starring role at the World Cup with Germany, only for United to spend money on Bebe instead with Sir Alex ferguson claiming there was 'no value in the market.'

However where Ozil would fit in at United is a question. The playmaker's arrival would push Shinji Kagawa further down the pecking order and ask further questions of Wayne Rooney.

Ozil's current contract expires in 2016, and he has recently been linked with extending that deal.

United fans is this a goer? Or simply more transfer nonsense?
